Faceups Alison's first face up! (and mine too)

Jan 21, 2021

    1. I was finally able to finish(?) Alison's faceup! Since this is my first faceup I would love some feedback, hints, and tips. Constructive criticism welcome but please be polite.

I used Mungyo pastels and Artist's Choice colored pencils. I sealed her 4 or five times before I started and then did about 5 layers alternating between the pencils and pastels. I didn't use acrylics yet because I wasn't sure if I had the right kind, if I even needed them or if I might rather use gouache in the future.

I'm pretty happy with how she turned out! I still need to add some gloss to the corners of her eyes but I think I'll keep the rest of her matte because she has a very 90's grunge look. (Also, did I do well with it looking authentically 90's grunge?). I also haven't added her eyelashes or put in her eyes but I'll put more updates when she is ~finished~.

Without further ado... HERE ARE HER PHOTOS!

    2. [IMG]So, for some reason, I can't add photos and I don't know how to delete this so I guess I'll have to figure out how to show you all later. :/

    3. Try uploading to some storage service like Gyazo and link to to pic?

    4. I upload all my WIP photos and documentation to Imgur first, and then link them here by clicking the "..." when scrolling over the individual photo and then "get share links" .. copy the BBC code for forums, clicking the photo icon on the post box here, and adding the BBC code (removing all characters within the brackets). I can provide you a quick visual walkthrough if it's not clear how to do. Let me know :)

It's a little clunky when you first learn, but a few photo-adds to posts and you'll be a quick pro :kitty2

    5. going off of what @maxxxamillion said, the same exact method can be used with flickr images as well c:

    6. Yes, a visual aid would be really helpful. I just got an Imgur account but it still won't post when I put the link in the image link bar that comes up when I click the icon.

    7. Okay! Hold tight :) I'll do it for you this evening!

    8. Okay, JK, I had time now...

      Underpromise and over-deliver ;)

      Here you go.

Hopefully it's self-explanatory that this is instructions following you creating a post in imgur.
I usually create my posts "hidden" and share the links as needed.

In Imgur, select your little personal icon at the top and click "posts."

Hover over the image you want to share to see the options.

You actually want to click the "..." NOT the "copy link."
      Pick "Get Share Links."

      Copy the "BBCode (Forums)" link.

Return to your post, and select the image icon. (My cursor disappears when I screen-capture, so to be very clear, it's the icon directly to the right of the smiley).

A pop-up will appear after you click the image insert icon, here you paste the BBCode you got from your image.
It has "img" and "/img" in brackets at the beginning and end of the piece you actually need. You'll need to remove that part.

And voila, you end up with this:

Click insert and your image should appear!

Sometimes the links look broken when you post. But if you've done all the steps as shown, the images are there. As noted in the DOA news at the top of pages, it's a site-wide issue sometimes but can be fixed by hitting "reply" to a post, and the images will show up in a reply box.

If you post your own post and have the issue, it's easy to check that the pictures did come through fine by clicking reply to yourself and seeing if they show up.

      Cheers!
Let me know if you have any more specific questions :kitty2

    10. Since I took those pictures her wig and eyes came in and I have some gloss and eyelashes to put on her. So I am going to finish her up tomorrow and post more pictures!

    11. Yay! Congratulations :)

You got her eyebrows SO even! (I really struggle with that :P ) And I love her eye shadow/contouring!

You mention not having touched the acrylics yet - opinions may vary between other people, but I personally tried acrylics for my first two heads and jumped straight to gouache. From a quality of medium standpoint, I really do feel that the gouache let me actually practice at my skill level, in that it wasn't actively fighting against me when I tried to make small lines or water it down.

With going for the grunge look, I think this is great! A few spots of gloss or a few little flecks of highlighted "eyelashes" at the very corner of the eye might give her just a tinnyyyy bit of "brightness" without overdoing it. I've been using the gouache for super thing eyelash lines but I think most people use watercolor pencils trimmed to a very sharp point.

If you have any stand-in eyes to test to kind of get a sense of the final overall look, sometimes that can help inform final detailing as well, because then your mind can kind of zoom out and process what you've done comprehensively.

You'll be a pro in no time!

    12. Here are more pictures of her with her wig and eyes! I still need to put the gloss and eyelashes on her but I'm nervous to mess her up :sweat

    13. @ailuranDUSK WOW! She’s looking good! I think the wig really completes her look. I also like the expression she has on her face.

    14. I am also a baby faceup artist but I'm not brave enough to post pics yet!

My only recommendation would be that the lower eyelashes are a bit too numerous. They tend to kind of crosshatch and turn into little V's or X's. Eyelashes don't usually grow in super thick close to the inner corner/tear duct of the eye, either.

Otherwise I think this is really great! Honestly, your mastery of the lip line is really impressive and I really dig how the lips look--kind of a matte lipstick look that I don't see in dolls much but didn't know I loved until I saw this! Plus those brows are bomb, super even. It's really obvious you know the face! You're incredible!

Side note: are you as impressed with Mungyo as I am? I bought some to practice on off topic fashion doll heads and I really adore them.

    15. I loooove her! Thanks for sharing her with the eyes and wig. It really helps to see "what's going on"!

While I sort of agree with @cloudmine regarding the eyelash distribution ... I also could say it depends on the aesthetic you had in mind to start :) I think that's the reason some people like to do sketches beforehand as well - to be able to answer whether they met what was in their head. Again, totally personal preference. I've seen a fair share of (and participated in, when I was younger) the very dramatic application of black eyeliner under the eyes, in real life too.

@ailuranDUSK How do you feel about your work now that you've put all of the pieces together? Anything stand out to you that you like or want to improve in particular?

    16. You really don't need to do all that. The forum uses BBCode; the image insert function adds back the same tags you removed from the code you copied from Imgur.

    17. She looks really cool! I already imagine her with upper eyelashes:aeyepop:

    18. Fair enough! I like to see what images I'm inserting as I go, so I can double check that I'm sharing what I intend to, so using that little button causes the image to load while I'm working. I haven't had the same experience when I just paste the code directly (all I see is code until I post). So that step can definitely be a matter of personal preference!

    19. Another good option there is the "preview" button under the reply box. :) I'll typically use that if I want to double-check image sizes.

    20. Thanks for the comments and tips! I am happy with her, I like her eyelashes even though they are pretty heavy. I was going for the super heavy 90's grunge look so that's why they are really intense. Overall I'm happy with how she turned out. The only thing I notice that I was a bit bothered by and that I might change or go over in the future is her lips. There is a chalky buildup in between her lips from using the wet pastels and the colored pencil that is pretty noticeable. Other than that I'm very pleased with how she turned out. :)
