66cm+ Dolls Alien [nudity]

Aug 2, 2020

    1. Hello,

Well i'm already a good way in this project but its not done yet so thats why i start here. Hopefully it will still turn into a nice project journal.

      The concept
An inhabitant of the Moon Europa. Part of an intelligent race of aliens evolved out of the watery depths, now living on the moons icey's surface but never far from the warmer watery depths.

Converting the concept into doll parts

      3D Printing
      [IMG]
First parts out of the printer (i am using a CR-10).
      More parts out, test fitting..
And testing how everything works with string. This showed plenty of issues with joints, range of movement, etc. All the parts printed, some parts redone i finally had all the parts.

    2. Again more tweaks to several joints. After some sanding and a few coats of primer this is how she's looking atm in a simple outfit.

In this pose standing she's about 70 cm tall. The eyes are 20mm glass sphere's. I'll remove the dress for a better look :)

And thats where i am today! I thought i was pretty close with filling and sanding but in a fresh coat of primer there are still plenty spots that need to be done. When all parts were assembled it also showed that standing her is still pretty tricky. With a tiny bit of support its fine but without i don't dare to take my hands further away then a few cm. I knew these legs would make things tricky ofc and i'll try to improve standing a little more by adding another bumpstop or something. Back to the drawingboard!

edit: i think some of the pics were too large, seems to work now :)

    5. This is quite amazing. I can’t wait to see more as you complete her!

    6. Been following your progress on Reddit, so glad to see the pics collected in one place! She's really been looking great!

    7. Thanks! Yeah its nice to keep a journal/progress report going here all in one place. At the moment i am printing out a new version of a part of her leg with a small bumpstop. More on that when its done printing :)

    8. I like this a lot!
Love the way you sculpted the eyes :chibi
I also really like the feet and the part on the back of her head (which reminds me of duck billed dinosaurs [Parasaurolophus] <- dinosaur nerd).
Looking forward to seeing how you work out the mechanics of the legs!

    9. Thanks! I think know that dinosaur. Wasn't that part of the head hollow to produce sounds? On my figure its more a wink to HR Giger and its alien design tho. Big HR Giger fan. Besides that yeah i wanted to push the design a little further so its not just like a humanoid body with a few small alien features. And also with no nose or even nostrils even i really had to make the eyes work :)

Made changes to a part of her leg (the dark grey bit) and got that printed today. Did a quick clean-up and then it was test fitting. And it seems to work well! With just one leg done she already stands firmly enough already that i now dare to walk away. The little bump stops (as drawn in the corner) seem to work nicely. Ofc something like this isn't 100% perfect, the leg is only extra strong when you pose it so that the bumpstop is being used. But with a leg design like this i'll take it! Now a bit more tweaking and then i can print the new left and right leg parts out tonight.

    10. Yep! Thats the theory :)
Not very familiar with the artist but his work looks crazy detailed. Alien was too scary looking for me so I haven’t watched it either hehe.

Congrats on getting a stable leg joint!

    11. She's really cool, Fierox. I love her hands and feet.

    12. Thanks! Yeah was a bit of a gamble how it would turn out, the feet especially. But i think it goes nicely with the weird legs :) Also plan to make a wide open hand. Should look pretty cool with the webbing between the fingers.

    13. Thought i show i pic about iterating or how far do you go in improving a model :)

Also maybe to give newcomers starting with 3d and 3d printing an idea to be flexible and if possible keeping cost low when you start with 3d printing your doll. Usually the first print is not the final version :)

    14. She is reassembled again with the new and improved parts! Arms pose good and especially the legs seem to work great now.
Next step is to redo the hands. Want to split the hand from the wrist ball joint. Plant to add a tiny magnets in there so it will be super easy to change out different hands.

      Standard pose:

      Legs rotated/different angles:

    15. Oooooh I like that she can crouch!
      Nice posing photos :)

Would you be doing a similar magnet system for the feet?

    16. Haha i didn't even think of the feet yet! Good point tho. Yeah maybe. See how it works for the hands and if it goes well i might as well try. Actually already had a few feet versions done. The high heel version looks quite nice and funny with her fin like feet :)

    17. She is gorgeous :)

    18. Thanks :D

    19. Wow, she is so beautiful and unique!! What an amazing doll! Incredible work. :)

    21. Really wanted to make switching between different hand poses super easy. This way its fun and easy to pick the hand that maches the pose you want. So i turned the hands into two parts (the balljoint and the hand pose) with room for tiny (but strong) magnets. Already got a few hand poses sculpted and ill probably add a few more later if it works. Now to clean them up a little and test how it works out. Should be way easier and more fun to switch between hands now :)

    22. Few more pics before i start disassemble and rework again. Will be mostly the new hands and some small tweaks and improvements to several other parts.

    23. This doll is coming along so nicely!
I love how cohesive the design is, despite being basicly humanoid, everything from body shape and proportions to the style of the head, hands and feet truly looks convincing as the parts of one single creature.

      • x 3
    24. Thanks! Yeah i didn't wanted it to be like a normal human body with an alien head, hands and feet. Made this model from scratch to avoid that. Still tricky tho, How far to really take it with each body part? At some point she also had a massive tail for example :)

    25. Wow!! Your doll is so amazing! I love it :D:D

    26. Pretty happy with the way the new hands work using these tiny magnets :)

      Ooh, new hands!
      Greetings humans!
Excellent! Definitely plan to add a few more hand poses :)

    27. Thanks! :D

    28. She's AMAZING!! She looks so smooth too, I just want to pet her little Alien head. :XD:<3

    29. She’s gorgeous! :love
The her entire composition, but especially her face and legs for me, are absolutely original and extraterrestrial yet complete and natural looking. Absolutely mindblowing! :shudder

    30. Haha! Thanks :)

Thanks so much! Yeah the legs were tricky. Really didn't know if it would work at the start but it was a fun challenge!

      • x 1
    31. Yay! Glad that the magnetic hands worked out :)
      I love the photos haha.
Kinda amazing how small the magnets are!

    32. Woah, this lady is breathtaking!.. And huge
      I love it

    33. Yeah but strong! I got a few sizes bigger magnets as well but the bigger ones are so strong i was afraid i would damage something.

Thanks! Yeah she's pretty tall, about 75 cm. The size was a bit of a gamble but i'm pretty happy with it :)

    34. So i am actually waiting for her uniform to arrive, working on a few extra hands + props in the meantime. This also might give some hints about the type of uniform i am talking :)

Next to that, well i can't stop tinkering it seems.. Currently my alien doll has a pretty big range of motion in the waist joint. Both in the left/right rotation and the back and forth. Because of that there is also a bit more of a gap. From some angles (here the hip was rotated a little and she is standing very upright) its pretty bad as seen below. Not terrible but still, its a gap :)

So as a test i decided to also make a tight fitting one. This torso fits a lot better but it has almost no back and forth rotation (you sort of have to pull it out of the socket a little if you want forward rotation). None sure what i like better actually. So i'll continue with both verions for now and decide later. Below the two versions, the left torso is the tighter one (after rough sanding), the right the current version (right is straight from the printer, this one had a few small printing errors so its sort of a spare :) ).

    35. Oh wow, I completely missed this thread, but your girl is fabulous! <3 Looking forward to seeing her finished and in her trekkie uniform. (Sucks to be her trying to buy a bra, though. :XD:)

    36. Thx! Haha, When designing her i thought that with only an alien head, hands and lower legs the middle part didn't seem "alien" enough. So i added extra breasts (and removed the belly button). You are right tho, its not easy finding clothes for her... or shoes :)

    37. Maybe try a middle ground with the torso joint? Your girl is really awesome btw and I wise you luck with her.

    38. It's incredible to see the original 3D designs into the actual doll!! it's really cool to see her stand too

    39. Yeah good point. Margins are pretty close tho and its starting to get difficult in 3d on screen to see how well it works exactly. Will do some testing and posing with these. Learn from it and iterate some more if its needed :)

Thanks! Yeah its fun to see how things developed along the way. Even for myself, to look and think back on what worked and what didn't and apply that on my next doll project.

    40. Update, she is finally assembled again! Also the first time i did a face-up and body blushing. Was alot of fun to do tho. Will do another layer with some extra detail but pretty happy how it turned out.

For the coloring i just used what i had already. Coloring pencils and a few pastel crayons (the crayons especially worked great). I used Tamiya semi-gloss (TS-79) for sealing. Went with semi-gloss because i wanted a little more shine from the alien skin.

Also super happy with her new TNG outfit!

    44. What a super cool doll! I'm going to subscribe to this thread, even though it looks like you may be finished.

Have you thought about casting rthem in resin? I would seriously consider getting one, especially if I could get the Star Trek outfit! :3nodding:

    45. Thanks so much! Yeah i looked into having it done properly but for a doll this size its pretty expensive! Plus i kinda doubt there would be enough interest for 10-15 aliens anyway (seem to be the minimum amount). So as a second test i molded and casted the torso/chest part myself. Unfortunatly it came out 95% correct. Great for what little molding/casting experience i have but still a failure... Still took quite some time to do.. so i'm not sure yet how to continue...

    46. Hi i loved see you progress on reddit! Maybe it's time to save money for pressure pot! Because this project is amazing and i just want to see your success!

    47. Thanks so much! Yeah i have seen some video's about people using those, often with a pretty big difference in results. Wish i could do a test run or something but maybe its just one of the tools i need to save up for! Pic below, ready for action :)

    50. Been a while since i posted an update about my Alien here... But i slowly have been making progress improving and getting her ready for molding&casting. Most parts are getting pretty smooth already, almost done with the prep work (finally) :cheer

    56. Thx. Yes well lets see how it goes! I would like to finish this project by resin casting her and post my experiences with the casting process. The parts in the pictures above have some small improvements, alot more sanding and they should be ready for casting. Not sure why but the resin took forever to arrive but its finally here. Meanwhile my strung alien traveled with me to a small bjd meet in Amerfoort!
