Alice in Labyrinth 1/3 Doll Discussion

Jun 9, 2017

    1. Shouldn't be a problem - My Heyley head is on a Volks SD13 Seirei body.

    2. @Teddy You're right, it goes quite well!

I've received my Aya and my Jane head today. They are lovely!

....and I just adopted an Elijah head^^ I already have a boy Elijah, so I plan on making my 2nd Elijah a girl... can't get enough of AIL sculpts!!^^

    7. She looks lovely

Here's one of my Edith (modded Heyley head), when I took her (and her cat) in to work with me last week:

(I tried to post the image itself but whatever I try it won't show up except when I click Edit to try and change it)

    8. @Teddy Your Heyley is a cutie- and you have dressed her in such sweet outfit! Is her wig from Natrume? :3

    9. Thanks.

I cut up an old shirt to make the red gingham skirt and waistcoat (the white under-dress is part of an outfit from Atelier SODA)

I've bought a number of wigs from Natrume, but I think the one Edith has on in the picture is from Ingriddollyshop on Etsy.

    10. @Teddy haha how awesome that you cut up an old shirt in order to make clothes for your Heyley!! I just slaughtered one of my own shirts the other day because I thought the fabric would be perfect for a jacket for one of my dolls^^
I have had such bad luck in the past with wigs purchased from Natrume- I'll check out Ingriddollyshop on Etsy instead- thanks :3

    11. Does anyone have photos of Jane?? I'm curious about her as she has such beautiful lips... but not many people seem to own this girl... ._.

    12. Good Hunting!

      Teddy

    13. @Teddy Thank you^^ Unfortunately, it appears that Ingriddollyshop on Etsy are currently closed.... so I guess my dolls will have to do with my own homemade wigs for now- but hey, at least they're not bald, that's always something :3

    14. This thread is slow moving so here's a little AiL spam to give it a boost.

I took Edith (Heyley) and her cat in to work with me the other day:

    15. Very pretty.

    16. @Teddy!

Your Edith is very beautiful! :) really like her outfit! :)

I recently got my AiL Alice as well.
      Here is a photo:

She has got company faceup, since it's my first doll, I was afraid to do anything at all.

I'm now a huge fan of AiL, I also ordered a sleeping head on its way. :D

      • x 2
    17. You've styled her beautifully.

Will you use the sleeping head as an alternative for this girl or will it be a different doll entirely?

      Teddy

    18. I'm actually not sure! For now, I think this new head will be an alternative for this girl.
I might decide something else completely different.

Working on a new doll is definitely a lot harder than just have it as an alternative. I think after my first doll, I can take a little time to decide what I wanna do for other dolls.

In fact...the sleeping head isn't the only head that's coming. there is another head i got as well..
I'm getting into the habit of buying heads only now...!

In the photo you have for Edith. may i ask where you got her shoes from? I like them a lot!

    19. That's great if you can do the body-sharing thing (some can, some can't - I definately can't - the spare heads either never get swapped around on the body, or I crumble and start saving for a body for each of them). It sure saves on space if you can do it though.

My absolute favourite place for doll clothes and shoes - Boneka
Handcrafted Doll Clothing - Doll Fashion - Boneka Tradition

    20. I guess we will need to find out!
However I am a little scared of having to restring the doll all the time though? i have yet to take Alice apart!

Thank you so much for recommending this to me. Often times i found it difficult to find shoes. Mostly I search for "bjd {insert_item_type_here}", and I usually can't find many options at all!

    21. You shouldn't have to srestring her just to change the head. I'll show you how it's done when you come over to see my dolls.

Opening it up to things marketed for other types of doll gives you a range of different options - Boneka shoes are sold by measurement of foot, not specific dolls they're made for.

These are Bonkea shoes she's wearing here too....

    22. Looking forward to that!

I just went ahead and bought a pair of Mary Janes from Boneka shoes! :) I wanted to get the same one as the red one you have in the photo but in dark red color, but i think it's out of stock :(

    23. One more question!

When I got Alice, she didn't come with a COA(which I now know it's a thing). Is that normal for dolls from AiL?
I doubt I need to be worried about her being a recast though since I bought her directly from AiL website...

    24. I bought my Alice directly from the site too. She only came with a card and a sponge. On one side of the card is a note that reads: "Thank you very much for your purchase of AIL product" and instructs me to clean the doll with the sponge, if it has been scratched or stained while in transit. On the other side there is an "AIL Dolls assembly drawing."

The blue and beige dress your Alice is wearing in your profile pic looks beautiful on her. Is it from Angel Studio?

    25. Yes! I have that little card as well, not sure if that's a COA though. from what I have seen COA would include a lot number and what have you.

Yes, it's this one from Angell Studio: Elina Victoria Dress Fullset -Blue snow
To be perfectly honest, I wouldn't recommend it. Considering the price, the quality isn't actually that great...
The dress is pretty much half broken. The little buttons on her cuffs are pretty much gone, and the ribbon on the hat came loose really easily(I did manage to fix it, but still)...The worst is, the fabric on the dress started pilling, which surprised me as well considering it's synthetic material...

    26. I want to share another picture of Alice:
I got this SD10-size dress a while ago and I'm very happy with it.

    27. I wonder if Alice in Labyrinth will have another sale when you get a free head wth purchase of a body or a doll this year...

    28. Does anyone happen to have a recent comparison of Volks pure normal skin and AiL normal skin?
I've scoured this thread and flickr already but only found references to AiL changing their skin colours over the years, so the match isn't that good anymore. *_*
I love the way this body looks for a hybrid of mine, now if only there's a decent colour match...!

    29. My AiL Heyley head is on a Volks normal skin Seirei body and my normal skin Volks Kujo head is on an AiL Body with no glaring difference in colour...

AiL Heyley on Volks Seirei body:

But I don't insist on an exact match because real people don't match exactly between the colour of their faces and the colour of their bodies (bodies are covered and shielded from the elements far more than faces are so most people's faces are different shades than their bodies), so it actually looks more realistic to have a slight mismatch between the two.

    30. Oh wow, thanks for the fast reply! That's definitely a very good match, I didn't even think this was a hybrid!

And your Hayley wears such a pretty dress! :D

    31. @Teddy She is so very beautiful, and looks like an antique bisque doll, I love how doll like she is! You put her together beautifully, and I dont think Ive seen a Heyley before :aheartbea

Ive been wanting to get a doll (Aya and Alice sleeping - now probably a Heyley too!) from them, but Im waiting for the heel foot to be released before I place my order (.....and im kind of perpetually broke from the amazing doll releases........!!!)

Ive asked a few days ago but they havent finished the foot yet, I do love what I see on instagram

    32. You're welcome. I just happened to have the picture already and could find it easily.

{laugh!} Thanks. It's not one of her usual dress(she favours red clothes) but it was the only one with a low enough neckline to show the colour match properly. Usually she's more like this:

Thank you! That's pretty much the look I was aiming for. She's part of a LARGE extended family of Victorian children.

I should warn you that mine is not the usual Heyley sculpt - she's had her upper lip modded on the inside of the mouth so it doesn't dip down so much.

You do realize that the AiL body is quite childlike, don't you? I only ask becuase wanting high-hel feet might mean you want a more mature/grown-up body.

I bought it because it works as a little-girl body for one of the younger girls in my SD sized family (it's shorter than Volks SD10 as well, which helps getting some height variation among the girls in the the family).

      Teddy

    33. could anyone tell me what size neck the ail head fit? i can't find it anywhere.

    34. @Enchiridion The AIL heads fits most regular SD bodies- bodies with 9cm'ish necks for the girls and 10cm'ish for the boys (even tho I have a boy head on a SD girl body with a 9cm neck- works Ok).
I think AIL recommend Volks SD bodies for their heads, so anything in that size will work.

    35. Anyone knows if there is any other companys, besides volks that match the resin and proportion of AIL 1/3 heads ?
I´m also interested in head stands that can match the heads too.

    36. I have mine on a Maskcat body and it looks great. ^^

      • x 1
    37. That's good to know. That body also looks pretty and I guess that means an AIL head would also fit on this Maskcat bust stand for their 1/3 dolls, which I'm thinking of buying. : Buststand
Are Maskcat normal and AIL normal a good colour match or would the white resins match better?

    38. I got my body off dollyteria and I don't remember if it said what color the body was I'm sorry.

    39. That's ok. Thank you for responding.

    40. I saw this link leading to some photos of AIL Fiona elsewhere on DOA and thought I would paste it here:
      CUSTOM記録

The photos are really pretty. Does anyone else have photos of Fiona?

    41. Has anyone tried putting Maskcat Doll ballet feet on an AIL body?
      Balletfeet

    42. I just found this video of a AIL head on a maskcat body:
The proportion seems very good. I would really like to know what color the body and head are

    43. I can't answer to the Maskcat resin color, but I can tell you that my AiL Chloe (full doll, purchased in late 2020) is much peachier than my Volks NS dolls (closer to my older Spiritdoll body than any other NS resins I have), which appear to have a more yellow tone than whatever color the body was in that video for Maskcat.

The head would then need to be blushed to match the body, so if that's your plan you're probably better off getting a white AiL head and then blushing it darker to match the Maskcat body if that Maskcat body is what their NS is and they don't offer resin matching. My two cents though, and real artists might have a different perspective.

I also would possibly send an email to the artist. AiL has always responded to my inquiries when I sent them a question, and really did their level best to give great customer service.

If you don't mind a color mismatch then yes, AiL heads fit a ~9cm neck, which is pretty standard for the 58-60cm girl bodies these days of various companies.

    44. Thankyou for your answer. I dind´t know about resin matching, I will contact AIL directly.

    45. [IMG]

My photography is predictably terrible, but I've been feeling my Chloe lately so sharing anyway. At some point I'll figure out where to take her to get a good picture. Today was not the day, though...

Part of my renewed love is I finally glue sueded the AiL body she's on and now she doesn't just collapse in on herself.

    46. I'm more interested in seeing dolls than seeing sdolls that are fantasitcally or artistically photographed.
My pictures are all point-and-click jobs as I regard photography as more of a necessary-evil of the hobby than an enjoyable part of it.

      And YAY for sharing Chloe!

      Teddy

    47. @vermaxen Your doll is so pretty. I love Chloe is one of my favourites dolls of all time.
What do you think of the AIL body regarding pose?

    48. I think that while the sculpting of the AiL body is more like a natural (short) body, that the posing is about what you would expect from a typical single jointed body (not huge ranges of motion).

I personally like single joints, so I'm never bothered but if having the ability to hold a wide range of poses without, say, popping something out of a socket is important to you, you might get frustrated.

    49. I find it OK - but my requirements ren't very varied.

      Teddy

    50. Random question, what’s the neck circumference/length on an AiL body? I cant really find it listed anywhere ;_;

    51. Just went to measure my Maudie for you (got the doll with the correct body this time around....)

Circumference: 8.7cm (three and three eighths of an inch)
Length (from very top, inside head socket) to where it curves out to the shoulder): 2.8cm (one and one eighth of an inch)

EDITED TO ADD: Sorry for giving the wrong measurements before I edited this post - I grabbed and measured the doll with the AiL head instead of the one with the AiL body....

    52. Do you think the newer (since 2020 or so) AiL normal resin will match Dollstown oriental skin? It certainly doesn't match Volks like it used to, so I'm a little adrift on what to do.

I thought about getting a DFH body and they will match to NS from: volks, little monica, xaga doll, IOS, Soom, Switch, Dim, Angel studio, Nine9, Dika, DF-A, Charm Doll, LoongSoul, Napi, ramcube, doll zone, myou doll, dearmine.

But heavens, I don't know about the NS for most of those companies. I know Volks is too yellow and not peachy enough. Little monica is close to Luts which is too light and doesn't contain enough yellow. And then my knowledge drops off. Anyone else have an idea?

    53. I hadn't realized it had changed.

      Good luck figuring it out.

      Teddy

    54. @vermaxen Hmmm I have a Dollstown oriental skin body from 2018 and an AIL head in NS from 2022. The Dollstown oriental skin body is more yellow and lighter in colour than the AIL head. So not really a perfect match.
I'm not sure if the newer Dollstown bodies would match? Did Dollstown recently change their oriental skin colour (I think I read something about it somewhere)?

    55. @Lotte Rotten I think you're right that they did, maybe I should go to the dollstown thread and see if someone has comparison photos.

    56. @vermaxen I think it would be a good idea to ask for comparison photos in the Dollstown thead :thumbup
BTW doesn't Dollshe and Dollstown share the same resin colours? I believe Dollstown have their dolls casted by mr. Dollshe? If that's the case, then maybe the Dollshe thread can also help you with comparison photos :3

    57. AIL is running a promotion!
With the purchase of a doll you get a head!
      Is anyone thinking of ordering?

    58. Thanks for pointing it out!

    59. I am thinking of ordering an AIL doll in the current promotion.
What color do you guys think ages best and gets less yellow with time?
I'm a little worried about buying dolls in white resin, because I have a doll that is the color of paper(dollstown white resin) But AIL white resin looks a natural shade while the regular resin looks too yellow.

Opinions on ail resin and color?

    60. I've only got Normal Skin (I avoid whiteskin s it always looks uinnatural and iunfinished to me until it has yellowed considerably), but I don't think it's yellowed noticablty in the 7 or 8 years since I got the first head. I just compared it to the much newer AiL body I have for another doll and they're both the same shade.
