Affordable Designs Question

Jun 14, 2005

    1. I am desperate to begin sewing for dolls who haven't arrived yet  !

I have already knit the halter dress for Serendipity Sharmin and was very pleased with the results - anyone have MORE knitting patterns - for either msd or sd sized folks?

I just now came across the Affodable Designs line of patterns via the FAQ's. And am duly impressed - plus you're allowed to sell the final product if you wish!!! How cool is that?

I'm hoping to hear from any Luts boy owners who have used the patterns and made them work - especially the boots?

      Thanks!

    2. http://www.fuzzylemontree.com/AD.html

That's the pattern review submitted for Affordable Designs so far. Hopefully more people will e-mail and review.

(Yep, I'm going to whip this as a pattern resource until I'm getting so many submissions that I start flailing for people to stop submitting long enough for me to update.)

    3. Thank you, Duae!

What a great idea - I wil leave a review for the Knit Halter Dress today. And you would like jpg's as well?

    4. I would love jpegs ^_^ I think it would be great for people to be able to see what the finished products look like. I know with commercial patterns often what you see in the pattern book pic isn't always the best guide for how it's going to look when you make it.

I think there are some knitting patterns in http://www.denofangels.com/patterns/knitting/

I personally crochet, and am horrible with directions (Mum has promised to teach me how to read them at some point, learn to crack the crochet shorthand code)

    5. I have both the boy's and girl's kimono patterns and have used them several times with good results. I wouldn't recommend them for beginners though, because they just give very brief intstructions without tips about pressing, clipping or trimming. Also, while I assumed that my Luts boys being slimmer than SD13 would do well with the tailored option on the pattern, it actually turned out not have as much overlap as I would have liked.

I do like Affordable Patterns email option -- much faster than waiting for the pattern in via snail mail.

    6. Thanks! Exactly the kind of feedback I'm hoping to get about these patterns! Now, when you say you didn't have as much overlap as you would have liked - what would you do differently?

I am sewing for Luts boys, as well.

Did you find any brocade with designs that seemed size-wise to work with the overall affect of the kimono?

    7. For kimono, Undead Threads has a kimono pattern for SD that I've used. It's not as perfectly authentic as some, but I found it super-easy to sew and should be sending some off to their new owners for photographs. Plus the pattern is free to DL, and free for individuals to sell clothing from

    8. Oh, good! As for overlap, there are two cutting lines on the pattern, traditional and tailored. The tailored is about 1" narrower through the waist and hips than the traditional and while it looks very smooth while standing, it gaps terribly while sitting. I would definitely use the traditional size next time.

I actually used cotton, rather than silk or brocade for my kimono. Here are some pics of the boy's in theirs: http://hedonia.net/dollfieville/gallery/groups/kimono/kimono.html (shounen-ai warning).

    9. Kellyhime ~ your boys are gorgeous and your kimono's perfect! Now, maybe I'm not seeing all the patterns at AD - but for boy's I'm only seeing the Haori - is there a larger pattern for the kimono or did you adapt the girl's pattern?

      The dragonfly fabric is fantastic!

      Thanks!

    10. Thank you! Actually, the boy's pattern has haori, kimono, hakama and a few other pieces included. It should for the price!

I was glad to find fabric with the right scale. I got it at a local kimono shop. There's another fabric store across the bay from me that has even more Japanese fabrics. We're making a pilgrimage there on Saturday after our meet-up.

    11. Ah, yes, I understand now - I hadn't read either the price - eep! - or all the bits and pieces. Thank you! I will try UndeadThreads kimono first and then consider the AD patterns if I want a more thorough piece. I'm just not sure about kimono's and elves...hee!

I am in SF twice a year, but alas, haven't been able to haunt my favorite fabric store of ALL time - Poppy Fabric in Oakland - for the last few years. *sob* Have fun, wherever you're headed.

    12. Oh, next time you are here, check out Stone Mountain & Daughters in Berkeley as well. They have an amazing Japanese fabric selection!
