Hello All! Hopefully this is the right place for this! I have a 72cm doll (with head measurements along the lines of Resinsoul's 72-cm gents) I'm planning for that requires a Puritan/classical Pilgrim hat. I've been informed there might be something along these lines in craft stores or the like, but I wondered if anyone here had any specific directions that I could explore in. I've already commissioned a basic Puritan/Pilgrim outfit for him, so the hat is all I'll need besides high socks and appropriate shoes most likely. Thank you very much for your help!
I've definitely seen that shape of hat in craft stores! Looking for felt doll hats would probably garner you some good results. Here's a similar hat in a handful of sizes on Factory Direct Craft. I'm sure it wouldn't be too huge of a challenge to add the classic buckle to it- you might even be able to find a bracelet, watch strap, or other doll sized belt to use! I also have a feeling you could find some premade ones on Ebay that may have once belonged to porcelain dolls or a holiday decoration if you searched for doll sized pilgrim hats. If you wanted to endeavor to make it yourself from scratch, wool felt is used in human size hats and seems to be what these tiny hats are made of.
Thank you! I've been anticipating having to use a little elbow grease to get the perfect hat for this fellow, so I'm looking forward to the (admittedly minor) challenge of altering it with crafty accessories if need be.
Personal opinion: This is about the easiest hat to make if you're willing to go from scratch! You wouldn't even have to sew if you're not comfortable with it; fabric glue on the inside would hold seams together well in the signature pilgrim shape! My recommendation would be to get a non-felted wool, use a round container the right size as an interior support, and give it a hot bath and heated dry to felt it. Felting it will make it a little stiffer and better able to hold its shape! If you're interested, I can whip up a quick tutorial for the pattern and construction. That said, if you'd rather do a little less crafting, you can absolutely get a similar hat from a craft store and add the band. I'd recommend a ribbon and a doll buckle; there are many, many sizes of buckle that are actually meant to slide on a ribbon to simulate a belt rather than be an actual belt. I'd suggest ISewForDoll or CharleneluDesign (both on Etsy, but I'm aware ISewForDoll also has their own site) because they have great variety and I've had great customer service experiences from them both. They're where I get 99% of my doll-sized notions, as I have yet to find something at least one of them doesn't carry.
Thank you! I'm definitely weighing my options; I'm willing to go either route to be honest, since it will be a fun project either way. I would love to see your tutorial, as I am an absolute novice at dolly clothes crafting of any kind.
And here it is! How to construct a round hat, either with needle and thread or with glue. I didn't mention using unfelted wool and felting it after, but that is something you can do if you make your pattern a little large. It will take some experimentation, though, since not all wools will shrink the same or in the same direction, depending on type of wool and weave of fabric. /tutorials/round-hat-patterning-and-construction.225/
This is a lovely and exceedingly helpful tutorial; thank you so much! Once my boy's head has arrived and I can make my way to a craft shop, I'm going to see about making his hat.
