Aesthetics Advice for a Faceup Newbie?

Jul 12, 2015

1. I've done a couple of faceups on MH dolls in the past, but this was my first time doing a faceup on a bjd. I'd love to get some tips, especially for the lips -- I had the WORST time trying to paint trying to paint the crease between my boy's lips, and I ended up with a bit of paint in the lips themselves! *_* Eyeliner and eyelids are also a problem for me. I ended up not giving him eyelids at all because his sculpt didn't have any, and I was too nervous to add them myself.

Some details on the eyebrows (sorry for the quality, I lost a lot of light before I remembered to get pics of the eyebrows!):

2. For a first time this is a stunning faceup! I love the detailing on the freckles, as well as the contouring you did on the lips. Though I think the eyeliner is a bit shaky toward the top of them. Really that is the only critique I have, and even that is a minor one only noticeable on the super close up version.

3. It is really very good. Those freckles look so natural! I think the individual bottom eyelashes are bit too thick, but only a little. A thinner brush or maybe just a bit more practice?

4. ArteLune: Thank you! I was worried about the lip contour so I'm glad it didn't turn out too bad. The eyeliner was something I struggled with, so I'll have to work on my technique.

Ruva: I adore natural-looking freckles in a faceup, so I'm happy to hear you say that! The eyelashes is definitely a practice thing, I think -- I have a hard time picking up the right amount of paint with my itty bitty brush. Working on a 3D surface is also very different from working on paper, so that's another thing I'm having to get used to *_*

5. Your lines are lovely and delicate. Very nice work!

6. For first faceup this is great! I would take more care with those eyelashes to make them a bit more even. But it is a beautiful job. Those freckles! Sooo cute!

7. I love how it looks. Eyelashes are not naturally even, I wouldn't stress about that. Making them even will make them look fake.

8. Stella Maris: I definitely like the uneven, natural look, but I do agree with Tango that they came out a bit wonky... at least on the right side. I'm okay with the left side :)

9. Gorgeous work. The freckles are very good. The eyebrows are excellent. I have noticed that they are harder to do on a redhead than on other dolls, the color match is exact. For a first faceup this is absolutely stellar. I am guessing you are a fairly experienced painter, yes?

10. He looks so sweet! I'm inexperienced though. Just looking at your work... :) So inspiring.

11. A very lovely faceup indeed. He looks very cute. :aheartbea
You seem to have the knowledge necessary to create stunning faceups already!
Painting MH dolls has certainly sharpened your skills, and the rest will be practice, practice, practice.

In my personal experience, if you want to create the illusion of an eyelid, you draw the type of eyelid line you think is appropriate.
these lines require a steady hand, and you seem to have the hang of it already.
Once you draw the eyelid line, you can shade the line with a darker shade of pastel powder to soften the edges.
Using a slightly darker shade than the base colors you are using will help create the illusion of depth.

And I am being serious when I say that you already have the basic knowledge at your disposal, and that practice will help you refine that skill. :)

12. Wowza! Simply fantastic! Love the texturing you did with the freckles, so cute! I can't believe this is your first face up! If you want to improve the lips though, I would say rather than using paint, use some highly pigmented pastel and draw a line with a thin paintbrush. This technique has helped me TREMENDOUSLY in doing face ups.

Good luck in your face up journey! :thumbup

13. Woops, forgot to check the replies for a while! Thank you all so much for all your lovely comments!

rosalynmouse Not a painter, but I do other forms of art :) Thank you!

Lady Alexiel Thank you for the advice, I'll try that next time!

MelodicReveries Thank you! By using pastels with a brush, do you mean when doing the crease between the lips? The crease is what gives me the most trouble...

14. I suggest if you are going with the ginger eyelashes on top to go with a lighter eyeliner. The black feels a little out of place in this faceup especially when you see it against the upper lashes. If he is supposed to be wearing makeup I recommend going with darker upper lashes. Those two together kind of throw off those faceup. :) when u wear makeup, you're going to do more than putting black eyeliner on your clean face, know what I mean?

15. Wow, I love the cheeks and freckles! Could you share how you did the freckles? I'm starting on my first face soon and I would love freckles on her too! Thank you

16. Such a cute face-up! You did great :whee:
I think for doing thin lines like eyeliner and eyelid/lip creases, the easiest/most precise option is watercolor pencil. On my first face-up, I used mostly acrylic paint, and I smudged SO much xD now I really only use pastel and watercolor pencil. A little paint for the eyeliner sometimes. But it's a preference thing, and if you want to continue working with paints you will certainly improve. I don't have the patience for them tbh :c but they can look really good. Personally though, I improved my line precision so so much just by switching to watercolor pencils, so I'm a big proponent of them, lol.
The freckles are amazing! You should do a tutorial for those :D I can't get mine so natural-looking yet!
