Hehe, thanks-- Kentaro is San Francisco born-and-bred. Well, OK, born in Japan, but his first owner bought him directly from Sato, and she lives just down the hill from me... then later, he moved uphill to live here... so this has always been his neighborhood.

I voted Una to be rereleased, in both SD and YoSD size, cause... of reasons xD she is gorgeous!!
I want to have the new SDg body as well. Wonder how it poses

I'm excited about this thread! I want to complete my girls so I can take a group picture. Sadly There's couple of faceups I gotta do and order some clothes before I can take a group picture. I have 9 complete Volks girls to show off! ^__^

I have a School D head that just rolls around, I bought it err... almost two years ago I think. I bought it to get a SD16 body for it but they seem so difficult to find (without a head)! At one point there were many wondering around at Mandarake but I didn't have the money then and it sucked! I wouldn't want to sell the School D but I don't like the idea of mixing two different companies. Gotta just wait for the perfect SD16 body deal then...

I'm also saving money for my tip to Japan next October! Hopefully I'm able to buy a doll from Volks store there. I really like the new Saki, she would be my first pick! (I wouldnt' say no to Tae if she was there and Saki was not... )

 

CONGRATS, SDink ! I have a Tae on the way, too ! Like you, I wasn't planning on her.... but you know the old saying about the best laid plans often going awry. Especially in the doll kingdom. ; )

@pris84: that Elena is HOT. She has that "makeup" looking faceup that I just go crazy for on dolls. That online FCS isn't going to be a one time thing for me at all xD I plan on satisfying my sunlight resin craving to the very end hehe! If they don't add SGrG as an option, I'm totally fine with the SD13g body. I find that the thicker neck gives a more realistic look :3 but I do enjoy the Grg body a lot. It's a body that's easy to keep "near" because of all the versatile sitting poses

That soap opera of a manga is my favourite lol. Her face up looks amazing - Volks really did up their talent in comparison to the FCS I ordered years ago. I really dislike the SD10 body. I love the sculpt and how chubby it is but reading about the fragile knees really puts me off so Im probably going to separate the bodies and sell them later on. I tried putting them on SDGR bodies but it just didn't look right - too thin, tall and mature - unless you are looking at them from certain angles and longer, more volume wigs.

I tried looking up SDg bodies but nothing - It sounds really interesting! Im guessing its a less mature version of the SDGR girl bodies? That would be perfect for the twins and some of the girls I have here !

 

I finished painting my Hajime Saito! Unfortunately he's going to be wiped and sent off today because he didn't work out for me, but at least I had fun with him for a while!



I think the head would look better on the SD17 body, but I really like the SDGr body, so I'm considering a different head for it. Something not quite as masculine but not too characterized either.

I wonder... Has anyone ever tried putting a girl head on the SDGr body?

 

Thanks so much! I owe lots of credit to SDink, anavel, Izam and a few others that (enabled me) helped me decide on her make up, hair and eyes. It was quite a mad house that day so I can't recall all the names and faces that helped out. And of course, Allie from Volks LA. But the help was appreciated. She was a very much a spur of the moment purchase which made it hard to do the FCS. I love that SDGr body too but I am doubtful will we see it on FCS in NA. SDGr boy is offered at Sato only and no Sumika (so far) has the option to order the girl SDGr body. But who knows? Maybe in the near future things will change again and they will offer it? I really hope so!

Thank you! I've never read the Manga of Peach girl but yes, her name means Peach Girl. I think I'm going to have to read it now. SDink and anavel named her actually when we were standing in line on Sunday and we were chatting about our FCS orders. I'm sure you'll see more photos of her. She feels like she's going to be demanding a lot of camera time.

I translate it through Google chrome but it shows you all the Volks bodies and how they compare to each other. My understanding is that SDg and SD10 (girl) is the same body. They do have different versions of it, like a split torso verses the solid one piece. And they have a suwarikko version where the thigh pieces are different that gives the doll a little more freedom in posing.

I have the boy SDGR body and many female headsculpts. Is there a particular style of head you are interested in ? Ive got a few of the "melon" early SD's, the realistic Belle and the cutesy types like Creamy Mami. Ive also got a Lorina but she's unpainted currently.

Pris84 - On my bucket list, Ive written that I want to at least order one FCS in person. Or at least visit the place some day. Its really exciting to go with people who have similar interests and the thrill of the whole process - I can only imagine how much of a blast it must be.

I love them so much! My OCD made me feel restless that I only had one of the twins and I knew I wouldn't be satisfied unless they were complete and reunited lol - I got them from the same seller. I know its stupid to say, but I feel like they are affectionate towards each other, like I only want to dress them in variations of the same outfit XD

I honestly thought it was going to be double jointed version of the current SD body XD It is super cute and fits the characters perfectly, but handling the twins stresses me out with the number of people having their's break. I really wish Switch didn't change their NS colours because the sculpt I think would be perfect. Too bad its not even close to being a decent match now XD

 

That would be FANTASTIC! I am looking to pair my "man" with an elfdoll Soah. I do love female sculpts as male. The ideal effect would have more femininity than the newer sdgr and sd17 male sculpts, but not so much that it looks too young with soah. I'd really love to see anything though. It would also by great to see the girl sculpts next to a volks male sculpt for size.

I have a quite old SD10 body and nothing happened to its knees (and I use it alot for sewing), I think I wouldn't worry too much about it. ^^

 

I've always loved Sakaki, but never did get him. Motiko, I love to see your guys, and Tetsuya is very handsome indeed.....I love Kouji (Iaso), too.

SDink, congrats on finding Tae. She's a beautiful doll!! (I kind of wonder if you got her from "my old friend" jr_toy, who is a very good seller, but terribly pricey IMHO.) I'd love to see what you do with her.

The twins are so cute. Funny, I've had two SD-10 boys since.....well, a very long time... Michele is at least 10 years old, and Ushi isn't much younger. Both have the "fragile" knee, but I've never had an issue with it. HardCandy13, your kids are great the way they are, IMHO.

You've done a wonderful job on Hajime. (Now that you mention it, I was wondering what the difference was between the SDGr and the SD17 was. I have the two boy bodies but have not gotten them out to see. Talk about lazy....shame on me.) ForeverVirginia, it's too bad you are selling him off.

 

My Saitou is on an SD17 body. And I put an SD16 Kira head on a boy Gr body, he's perfect that way!

@ForeverVirginia, that Saito is stunning with that faceup!! The lighter makeup shows how much his facial structure resembles Ryoya or Masamune or the other SDGr boy faces. They've all got that strong + delicate thing going on. Sorry to hear he won't be staying.

What is the "fragile" SD10 knee that everyone's talking about? Is it a girl thing? Or is it a problem with a certain year's model? My solid-torso SD10 Boy stands like a rock and his knees are solid.

 

I use proper lighting equipment, use natural sunlight, use a tripod and photoshop to edit the pictures and the pictures I took just now with the sun setting down, no equipment and no photoshop and they look 100 times better than the ones I prepare for LOL

I used SDGR Belle since she looked the most mature out of all my girls I placed her head on the SDGR Boy body (seriously, all my girls have cutesy girlish face ups - belle I think looks neutral) I think he looks pretty handsome ! Like a character from Final Fantasy lol. He looks okay if you are going to keep a wig on and not count on rotating the neck much - its pretty stiff. I tried Yu and Lorina's head and they both had the stiff neck problem so you would probably need to sand the neck thinner.

The problem I think is that the boy heads dont have as much as a nape as female heads. My Okita has a much smaller nape than Belle, Creamy Mami etc and also has a bigger neck hole even though the girls heads are bigger than the boys. I think Soah's head is much closer to SD16 though, at least in facial proportion. Unfortunately, I have no SD16 Girl to take pictures of, but Ive seen many Olivia boys so I think it would work !

Kalcia - Thank you ! Im definitely getting them different face ups. The default is charming, but I want to make them look a little bit more realistic. Their face ups remind me of those vintage raggedy ann dolls! Im going to keep them with different eye colours and the same basic characteristics as the Rozen Maiden show but with different face ups Finding an artist available will be hard since almost everyone I want runs a lottery or is fully booked XD

Oriscany - Thanks for reassuring me I really truly love the body, I honestly prefer how soft and chubby it looks and it suits their young looking faces. Most of the bodies are too mature to pull off their head sculpts I think. I tried SDGR Girl and it didn't look nearly as cute on it. SDink - Thank you so much ! I honestly think you can take a tennis ball and make it look like Megan Fox with all your skills XD I thought the SDg body was a double jointed SD body, but it turned out to be the same classical SD 9/10 body. I think its just the term of SDg that threw us off.

Motiko - I just noticed that Tetsuya is a Sakaki - he's so beautiful ! I dont really like boy dolls too much, but Sakaki is just so dreamy and happy looking

It seems people were getting breakages on the SD boy and girls and very rarely on the SD13 girls. I had the Cyndy I's body and never had a problem with the knees and she was my favourite doll, so it wasn't like she wasn't handled much.

I've never run into it myself, either, but it does seem to be (or to have been) a Thing.

 

Here is a quick photo of 10 yr old knees on a SD10. My kids don't like to show off their Under things, but I told them it would be ok just this once.



The knees are actually quite stable and strong.....maybe not the most beautiful.....but very functional...lol

HardCandy13, I think for face ups you could try 3rd_strike on flickr ^^ she may be booked now, but whenever I ask she tells me when I can send the heads and it's usually no longer than a month. I think her amazing talent is actually worth the wait most of my dolls have her face ups ^^
I think if you want to keep girl's head on that SDGr boy body, neck needs some sanding ;< it's a bit unnaturally long and wide for the head, unless you use bigger head ;D

 

I'll have to envision the break, because I don't see any pics... But I'm glad that random knee-breakage seems to not be a problem that affected the Magical Michael SD10 body (that being the original source of Rainey's bod).

Oh there we go, thanks! Woww, so the tongues on the side of the knee-socket just snap right off? That's freaky. The resin doesn't look like it's so thin that it should break. Maybe the way the girls' knee joints rotate while they're inside the socket puts some weird kind of stress on it. And Volks didn't get the picture & start offering free limb replacement for defective parts?

Ooohhh, Momoko is really striking, and those eyelashes are super-dramatic! Did you have a particular style inspiration in mind for her, or was she a spur-of-the-moment design? (She reminds me of a softer, subtler version of gyaru or decora style, with her tan, full lashes, and pale lipstick.) And I love the way she's blowing a kiss!

He looks very cool -- sorry the face-up didn't work out for you, but it's really nifty seeing these boys in non-default looks

I've seen a ton of Olivia boys -- they seem to be really popular, especially for Asian collectors (at least, this is what Flickr tells me *grin*) The Olivia head seems to work really well as a unisex sculpt.

Regarding the knee breakage stuff -- I had to actually do a count when I was filling out the Volks vote/survey the other day, and had to admit that I had, er, "between 21 and 30 Super Dollfies." *ahem*

Most of mine are SD10s (I have one or two SD13s -- I'd have to undress them to figure out which bodies I've kept/sold, and two Yo's), and while I have a mix of oldskin and pureskin SD10 girl bodies, I have *never* had a breakage of any kind on one of my dolls -- and most of them get a fair amount of play/posing/re-dressing.

I did buy one body that was broken in the same place you describe (although she didn't look like she'd been treated terribly carefully, frankly, although I was glad that the former owner had kept the broken piece), and Ravendolls was able to repair the break successfully.

She used a piece of fine netting inside the joint (helps keep it together under stringing pressure), and used glue and milliput to strengthen and repair it. I don't know what technique she used to get the outside so smooth and perfect and even-colored, but unless you knew what you were looking for, you'd never guess that Eris had ever been broken.

My Suiseiseki's knees are just fine, and I've never had any knee issues with my other pureskin dolls -- I do try to pull the knee out a little before bending it at a 90-degree angle, just because it encounters less resistance that way, but there are plenty of times when I've bent their legs without any kind of special treatment.

If you like the SD10 bodies, I'd keep them -- and since there is an effective repair technique in case you need it, hopefully it will be a slightly less stressful prospect?

Hi everyone, dropping in for the first time in this discussion. All of your girls and boys are so adorable!

I don't have an SD yet, but I've fallen in love with those new SD standard models!!
Their site says early summer, but still no word yet on release~
Do the standard models usually 'sell out'? I know it's going to be long past summer before I can get around to obtaining one.

 

I think if Volks USA gets any of the new Standards, they will sell out rather quickly. I hope we find out when they are coming.....I really love the way Chiyo and Saki look.

Oh, I didn't realize I hadn't posted in this thread yet!

I had a Volks Kun from the era of knee-breakage, but I was aware that it could be a problem so I was always very careful about posing her knees. None of her knee pieces ever broke off, and I recently shipped her overseas to her new owner and her knees survived that as well. I think it might have been more of an issue for people who didn't know the knees were vulnerable to breaking. I had my Kun for eight-ish years and never had a knee problem even with normal "playing", and I wouldn't be too worried about knee breakage even if I got another doll that was prone to it - they're sturdy, as long as you're relatively careful.

 

*squeeee* I have such a crush on Henry! That suit is definitely dapper. I think the dapperness just sets off those squeezycheeks freckles all the more.

Hiro, my Volks SD13 Link, just had his NINE year anniversary with me, on June 21! He's my first BJD and still my favorite.



Here he is wearing the sailor uniform I made for him for the BJDC 2012 in Austin. It's sort of like a modern US Navy uniform, but the hat is loosely based on the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man's (from "Ghostbusters"). LOL!

But the major set is 400 dollars&#8230;ugh the price of a whole doll, it isn't unreasonable, but gah, I don't think I can justify it! I am trying to be good for Volks releases...

I took a number of shots of them together, and I'm working on editing some of the comparison photos where I tried to get clear images of their faces side-by-side.

It's hard to get exact apples-to-apples shots (I only have a working macro lens at the moment, so getting the proper focus/angle is a little challenging.)

I hope that at some point, someone manages to take shots of the two *blank* heads, since the face-ups/eyelashes on my girls are so different that it makes it a little difficult to tell whether changes were made to some areas of the sculpt (Lyra's light eyelashes are a different shape/size from Suzume's black ones, they aren't wearing the same size/style eyes, their mouths are painted differently, so that Lyra has a cupid's-bow while Suzume has her lips painted wider/fuller, etc.)

I do think that there are some changes -- the lower part of the face is a little bit more full, with a slightly stronger chin. And I've heard that the SDGrG Tae cranium is larger than the SD10 Tae cranium, for a better fit in wigs. (I only have Lyra, who is an Anais II rather than an LA Dolpa Tae, so I can't comment. Can anyone confirm that Tae is a direct re-release/re-casting of the Anais sculpt by Volks, with no changes at all?)

I think they both still maintain their essential "Anais-ness," though, and they're both truly lovely girls!!

This isn't one of the comparison pics, just a shot of my sisters together -- I had 200+ photos to go through and winnow down, so I haven't gotten to the facial close-ups yet. Will post when I do!
