[Adopted] Mirodoll Discussion - Part V !

Mar 3, 2016

    1. The body I ordered in May is finally coming! I hope it'll be here soon. I already have a customization slot reserved for the colormatching and modding of the head I wanted for it so it's not just me waiting!

I am very concerned about their poor time and product management lately (that "black" doll), and am hoping that my order will be okay. Not sure what I can do if it's not okay. The 60cm body was the best match I could find...

    2. I'm not sure WHAT I'm going to do with "Mister Grey" at this point... Every time I look at him, he annoys me more. Turning him into a shadow person isn't really in the cards given the color he is and I just can't work up any enthusiasm to do anything *else* with him... But I also can't, in any kind of good conscience, sell on a doll like this either. Even if I list him cheap, I'd feel like I was cheating somebody. o_0

It's not just his color or his terrible sanding marks. His engineering is clumsy... Wonky knees that don't want to line up properly, arms that tend to turn around in odd ways because the "peanut" pieces are too small for the joints, one hand that's incapable of matching the angle of the other, channels so poorly drilled I had to restring him with dental floss (I couldn't even get a ribbon through his arms to pull the elastic, much less my stringing tool!) He's a whole laundry list of weirdness.

Maybe my "elitism" is showing here, but yikes... "Inexpensive" seriously doesn't have to equal "What the heck, man?" My OnlyDoll guy, the two little ResinSoul beasties and those dirt-cheap old Fantasy Doll bodies that I used to use as temps for my Delf heads all prove that. This guy? Not so much. He's... yeah. He's got issues.

I think I'm going to ask the Mod Squad if I can offer him up as a "Free to a Good Home" project/mod-fodder piece down in the customization forum... I'm not sure what the rules are for giving away resin these days, but at least he might turn out useful to somebody that way. Over here? He's doomed to stay in that box forever. <_<

    3. That's so terribly sad! T__T He does seem to need quite a bit of work. Did you get the 60cm or 68cm body? I know what you mean about the wonky jointing. I fixed a good portion of the problems with my 68cm with hot glue sueding.

I hate that this was your first experience with Mirodoll. They have had quality issues, but I know I haven't had anything that bad.

You could always offer him as a free to fix project and see if someone can work magic on him for you~

    4. He's on the regular Rain bod, so... 68cm, I think?

I'm too annoyed with the guy to keep him, honestly. I'd end up resenting him no matter what was done with him at this point... So, better to find him a new home with someone who wants to mod the heck out of him and will like him afterwards.

I did pose the give-away question to the mods, so we'll see what they say.

    5. what a shame, you could try the fb "bjd saviours" group if the mods don't want you doing a giveaway here. The people there are pretty dang creative and usually can find a use for even the most mangled of dolls.
I mean, I know someone who managed to pass on a totally crushed doll to someone, like... completely run over by a truck crushed.
      poor doll.

Such a shame this didn't work out though, it's a real bummer to see how much qc issues Miro are having of late and no, dark grey is NOT black and claiming it is just shows contempt for customers. They've done black before and it's been jet black so they're talking nonsense. The fact they seem so unwilling to work with customers who DO have problems is quite offputting. there's been a few recently where they've just had this "it's your problem" sort of attitude and i'm sorry but, I have no time for a company who blames customers for their issues. It's just not acceptable.
You have an obligation to make the customer happy and while some customers are blooming difficult, when you're selling expensive things (even if miro are cheap for bjds, it's still not a cheap purchase for many people) you dang well better back that up with customer service or you'll drive away potential customers.

You know resinsoul do custom colours now? So they might actually be an option for a black doll as well if you don't mind their lanky as heck sd bodies.
And they WILL get it right.

But gosh this is sad to watch Miro crumbling like this. I mean, they've never been great with their customer service but at least their products, though flawed, weren't THIS flawed and they weren't so... blase.

That boy def ain't right and i'm so sorry to see the wait and cost was all for naught. That's not fair.

Also, shadow person sounds amazing omg. Do you have concepts? I wanna seeeeee. (on a positive note)

    6. I've never done sketches of Drua... He was an NPC in a tabletop game I ran a few years ago. Basically, a living shadow that was vaguely human-shaped and human-featured, with two bright spots for eyes and a smoky wisp that suggested hair. He liked to hang around the player character group because they were a lot more interesting than most of the people in their tiny home town.

They were never quite sure if Drua was a ghost, or an elemental, or what...

    7. If he were translucent gray he would have looked awesome.

    8. @Brightfires I would think you'd be able to sell him here for a nominal sum. People love fixer-uppers.

    9. I've seen near-free doll / parts on the MP here (in fact got some freecycled miro parts for a mod project ^^).

    10. Like I said, with the problems he has I'd feel bad selling him, even for cheap.
Hopefully I'll just get to give him away. That solves the issue without anyone having to feel guilty about it.

And yeah... His color would have looked interesting in transparent resin. Still not dark enough for Drua, but interesting. It's not a bad color as-is. 'Just very, very uneven after the sanding.

    11. Here's the smaller version Hector head on the older type Miro 60cm body with a face-up by me:

Brightfires, I received a patchily sanded and dusty Miro Mika in the dark chocolate resin and I got her wool polished, which took care of the problem and the resin also looked darker afterwards.Re-strung and sueded, she's been all good ever since. The wool treatment made her a bit shinier, but that was easily enough fixed with a layer of matte sealant.

    12. ooo smaller hector head!?? That's awesome!
Still looks a litlte big on that body to my eye, but yay smaller versions!

Also yay shadow people. I have a shadow priest character somewhere heh, he wears a cloak made of living shadows, they talk to him. People find him creepy but that's not because the whole surrounding by whispering shadows thing, he just IS creepy and weird lol.
      I love him.
He's also impossible to shell because he's so weird lookin argh.

    13. Yep, that's exactly what I've been thinking as well. This smaller Hector head would still need the 66cm or the 68cm body. I'm hoping to acquire him one eventually.

Here's smaller version Apollo on the new 60cm body. I'd prefer him on the 66cm body as well, but he works the 60cm size somewhat better than Hector who has very large features.

    14. oo that's awesome, these two sculpts are really unique so having them a bit smaller opens up more possibilities.

I'm still waiting for them to release some more msd heads too.

Apollo looks pretty dang handsome on the smaller body but yeah, Hector I think needs broader shoulders and longer legs. He's got such big features, he needs a beefy body to balance.

    15. While I'm glad you had good results with it, when I tried the buffing trick on the top of Grey's head all it did was make the contrast between the heavily sanded bits and the more lightly scuffed parts slightly more noticeable. It didn't suddenly turn greyish-blue resin into black. I wish it had. o_0

ETA: Manual buffing with a wool scrap didn't do much for Grey's condition, but with a little tinkering I *did* find something that helped a little more. I had my Dremel out to trim new crosspieces for one of my kites last night and remembered that among the assorted bits and pieces I have for it was a soft buffing wheel. THAT made some progress, at least with the shallower scratches and lighter discoloration.

He's still gunmetal grey... If anything, the buffing and resulting shine just brought out even more of the blue tone in his resin... and you can still see the uneven patches and sanding bands, but he does look less abused and unfinished after a session with that thing. Power tools for the (partial, at least-) win.

    16. @Blankqueen your boys are very handsome!

@Brightfires it sounds like he'd be great for a robot character, or something like that. You probably weren't planning to have a robot character though. :sweat

    17. I already have my androids accounted for. Mender, Oracle and HERA don't need a kid brother... and Tamarind's already got his little rustbucket side-kick, too.

    18. oo blueish grey sounds quite pretty. not what you had in mind, but sounds pretty.
Love to see pics of him after his little uh.. all over buffing lol.
      Poor boy.
Such a shame, but I expect they messed something up mixing that colour.

    19. Thanks on the boys, everyone!! :) I'd take more photos of them, but it just keep raining and raining now...

Brightfires, gunmetal grey sounds exotic, but yeah, looking at how he was, I didn't really think you'd get him looking black. I just thought maybe you'd get him to a state that would at least inspire some new ideas. I've got a massive amount of dolls and every now and then I end up with one that does not fit the bill I intended it for. I'm just too lazy to do sales, and having an overly active imagination, I usually always end up coming up with some new fun idea for the flawed dolls. Sometimes after the struggles, they end up becoming even more special than the so called perfect dolls. But at the same time I totally understand your frustration and disappointment in not getting to do the thing you had set out to do. I hope you'll find a way a realize that dream yet!! :D

    20. Still patchy....
      Still grey...

But after two sessions with the dremel buffing wheel and another thorough cleaning, at least Mister Grey is starting to look like a doll that somebody cares about.

My god-daughter took one look at him and said "Three words... Night. Elf. Mohawk."

(A "Night Elf Mohawk" was what Mr.T called his favorite Warcraft character. It was a similar color. XD)

That blueish gun-metal color of his really isn't bad, and as far as I've seen, is almost certainly unique. Maybe he was destined to be a Warcraft refugee...

    21. Oh my gosh, Brightfires, what a transformation! Your dremel buffing wheel provided a way better finish that I ever would've expected. Wow. You've done well. I have to say, personally, I find this gun metal colour very inspiring... dang, I'm all envious here now and wish I had a dolly with some of that. Hehe! I like your new ideas... how exciting! I starting to think you will pull something uber cool off with this bloke yet... ;)

      • x 1
    22. And I am soooo gonna use a buffing wheel when my girls get in... I KNOW they'll need buffing with the darker resins. And I can't find a wool sweater. Heh.

I missed a ton of posts! getting very tired of that. :(

@Brightfires, not black for sure, but he is looking SUPER cool! Night Elf Mohawk! *LOL* Love it! Maybe Mr T will see him and buy him from you for mucho money!

@Blankqueen, gorgeous job as always!!! You really make Miro dolls shine and have a life of their own!

    23. @Brightfires : Oh wow! This little mistake of a fellow is turning out to be quite the interesting and unique guy! Seems like he's almost starting to grow on you! hehe!! I think he's becoming gorgeous, just needs a lot of love and work. Which is ubber hard when you're expecting one thing and get another.

I would venture to say that some light sanding would smooth out the patchiness, then a final buffing would clean it right up. You could even try a dye job to darken him. But I'll admit, that accidental shade is stunning on it's own. *___*

@Blankqueen and your Hector and Apollo make me want on on the 66cm.... eeep!!!

      • x 1
    24. 'Still not sure if I'm going to keep him or send him off to someone else, but the color has sort of grown on me since I managed to clean him up a bit.

Tomorrow I think we'll dive through the wig collection to see if anything suits him. (The white wig that Grey had on in the picture was swiped from Killian, my Ryoma. He's since reclaimed it. ) I have a feeling silver might work pretty well with that blue-grey shade.

    25. Oh please share pics when you wig him! He's neat!

    26. night elf mohawk yesss!

He's a cool colour. Def not black, but wow what an improvement buffing him made! He's not nearly as blotchy and gouged up looking!

    27. @Brightfires he's looking so good! I could see him with maybe some metallic glitter dust here and there. ;)

    28. @Brightfires I'm sorry you didn't get the color you were promised/hoping for, but I think he's a beautiful color. Maybe even a little blue?? Or maybe my monitor is off? Anyway, I think you're doing a great job with him and I'm sure that if you do decide to pass him along, there would be many takers! (Myself included haha!) Of course, a night elf mohawk does sound interesting. I'd like to see that if that's what you decide to do.

Also, I have a question for anyone with a 70cm girl body. What clothes fit? She seems so tall and lanky!

    29. My 70cm Miro girl Iris has done a little presentation about what clothes and shoes fit this body HERE. Maybe you'd find something useful there, Dark Angel! Mine uses mostly boys' clothes, but there are some normal SD17 girls tops and skirts that work ok. Iple EID woman clothes might work, but I don't have any myself. (Btw, love your username. I'm a huge fan of the old TV series Dark Angel. ;) )

I took some more photos of Apollo and Hector today:
There are more pics of them, as well as some hybrid experiments, HERE on my blog. You can see how these heads look on some 65-68cm bodies there.

    30. They are so flippin' cool, they have a whole neo-Victorian/Steampunk vibe going. I love it.

    31. @Blankqueen, I looked over your whole head and body Miro blog concerning the boys and I am surprised at how GOOD they look on the little 60cm bodies, at least from the front. Once you look at the sides, you see the head is blocky for the body. I agree a 65/66cm body would suit them best and that is no slight to Miro- some heads, Miro, just need a bigger body. Apollo and Hector have big features and need bigger shoulders and necks to balance them. Still, they looked good despite being on smaller bodies and that was mostly, I believe, due to the incredible fashion sense and artistic vision of the photographer. You made them so handsome in every way!.

    32. hello,
nice to meet you all here
i ordered my first mirodoll last month and can't wait to get him home soon >2

      • x 1
    33. 61 business days and counting.

    34. That's about what it took for my Rain to ship, so hopefully your order will be on the move sooner rather than later.

    35. I am on the pacient side...
waiting on a dollzone aswell and i know they are taking 6 Months XD
so 2 months are totally fine =3

    36. @Brightfires I hope so. But I have two full 1/3 dolls (with faceups) coming, a bunch of shoes, and a free 1/3 body. So I'm thinking it'll take a bit longer. Although I hope not! I want my dollies! :XD:

    37. I ordered a Mirodoll Orlando on the 67cm Body ^^ without face up - cause I will make him the Drummer to my Yuhma (Guitarist of the japanese band Fixer - I made a doll of him)

    38. [IMG] Hello! I'm a bit new here, ahaha. This is my girl, Reina. She's a 1/4 Lili :D (Her sister is the doll on her lap, but she's an off topic doll, so I may discuss her over in those threads). She's my first resin bjd, so she's helping me get accustomed. I still have to body blush her, and currently she is a bit kicky, so I will need to restring her....hopefully restringing isn't as scary as it seems!
      IMG_20170729_242548320.jpg
(hopefully my image works?? Trying to figure this site out lol)

    39. first: welcome here =3
you have a really cute girl there also reina is a nice name =3

stringing is not that horrible as it seems and there are a lot of tutorials on youtube =3

    40. @Opheliaccat Hi! Your girl is really cute. If you don't want to restring her, you could try hot glue suedeing her. That might help a bit. :)

      • x 1
    41. @Dark Angel Thank you so much!! And yeah I'm definitely gonna try that. I'm a bit more comfortable with a hot glue gun than totally restringing dolls at the moment XD

    42. Hello!! I'm new in this thread ^^. I'm looking into buying a mirodoll body for my 5stardoll Michelle. I need a more poseable body and Mirodoll seems to me to have the joints I need and it keeps the same proportions. SO! I was wondering if anyone here was able to help me with a problem: I don't know which resin will match. The 5stardoll NS is quite rosy, so I'd be tempted to buy the Normal Pink one but I'm desperately trying to find references first!

I'll be grateful to anyone able to help me! Thank you!!

    43. my 5star boy is already around 4 years old but i can make a comparision picture with my Mirodoll boy when he's in. i ordered him in Normal pink skin.

      • x 1
    44. @Jigarkhvar that'd be lovely!! Thank you! I'm not in any rush so I'll gladly wait! Thank you!

    45. will do ^^
I just dunno when my boy arrives
ordered 2 dolls last month (for me and a friend ) so it might be some more waiting ^^

    46. Don't worry, I can wait!

    47. There she is! Great price too. :)

      • x 1
    48. Miro didn't even tell me. *LOL* Nice surprise though!!

    49. Yes, it really didn't take them long to produce her!

    50. Owner pics will show her in her true glory- one thing about Miro dolls, they take outside influences to make them shine. Like Blankqueen's pics... owners love the doll to their full potential, which is probably how it should be.

      • x 1
    51. I'm so excited about that new body! I feel like it came out of nowhere. Honestly, miro's bodies and pricing can be a lifesaver, especially for budgets

      • x 1
    52. Miro's website pics never do their dolls justice. When I see owner pics it doesn't even look like the same doll!

      • x 1
    53. Exactly! I know a lot of people won't like this body... but they don't like the Impldoll one either or the HID, so... you know, it's hit or miss. Many will like her, many will not. It's the nature of the beast. I just hope they are kind in their criticisms as the artist was not a Miro employee but a doll lover who just wanted to get something out there for other doll lovers.

    54. I for one appreciate her efforts. I hope to get one in a month or two!

    55. I just got an email saying my dolls are ready to ship! Woo! (but they are out of some of the shoes that I wanted so I have to email them with replacements. which actually happened the last time I ordered from them, too.)

    56. Just dropping in to share a picture of my Iris, Madison.

    57. Love her resin color, she is stunning!
