[Adopted] Mirodoll Discussion - Part III !

Oct 3, 2013

    1. I wondered if the humidity might have caused it, since the first coat earlier in the day when it was drier was fine, but the second coat in the afternoon, as a storm was moving in (I live by the ocean), completely clouded.

    2. I'm astonished by the great color that this ebony is in real, looks like exactly like a dark blue, which is a super nice color imo.
I never used MSC for any of my faceup attempts, cause it's not easy to find in EU more over there are better sealants even in bigger can.
I wish just to point that using nail polish remover on any BJD isn't good at all, nail polish remover tends to yellow a lot original color or alter it a lot almost immediately.
I got an entire black skin mirodoll body and i have no issue in sanding it a little, just to point that Mirodoll isn't spraying of color the normal resin or white resin to reach the special colors. Some said it in past but i wish just to point it clear one more time.

    3. Your ebony Mika is totally amazing. I love the colour. Her hair and facs up are fantastic and really suit her. Congratulations

    4. Surely humidy is a big issue with MSC, or MSC react more than other sealent to humidy.
I do agree that even if different than what you've expecetd i love this color, cause have an hint of deep blue, i should try to ask to Mirodoll if they can do the same color to me!
Thanks for sharing link about MiroDoll custom face-ups Chalyss, superkind from you!

    5. Thank you, everyone. Yes, she really is a lovely doll- the sculpt is just beautiful. The color is almost like a very dark Payne's Grey. There is definitely a blue undertone to it, esp. in certain light.
She poses really well, too. For some reason she poses better than my other miro doll body- the same one. ???? But she stands like a rock. I'm super happy with her.

    6. Thankyou for the faceup info on the Mirodoll site Chaylss. I dont remember seeing that link before.
Its good to know they do them although I should be brave enough and try painting one myself. I have all the stuff but am too wary of ruining a head!

    7. Don't be afraid! Just do it- take it slow. You can always wipe it if you don't like it. :)

    8. Zoo Lady, I can put you fears at rest: as long as you put at least one good coat of MSC (or Purity Seal) on the head first, you can't ruin the head at all; it's protected. Worst thing that can happen is that you hate the face-up and then you just wipe it off and start again (with a new coat of MSC). No worries.

    9. I think the link is brand new! It wasn't there just a few days ago, I'm sure.

Zoo Lady, I understand your fear! I remember my nervousness the first time I did a faceup... and mine was on vinyl, which can stain worse than resin. I procrastinated for days, then finally took a deep breath and tried it. I didn't even have proper pastels, I used my own makeup! One thing I will strongly suggest is to have enough light to work by; sunlight is best but strong enough artificial light should be sufficient. Lack of light will be your greatest adversary, but do coat the head first because you'll need it for the pastels (any powder) to even stick as they need some tooth to latch onto. Resin and vinyl on its own is too smooth. (That first faceup is still one of my better ones though the head has been rehomed. I finally switched the doll to all resin.)

    10. chalyss, yup, it's great to learn by trial & error! And yes, lots of light; no painting faces in the dark, human or resin! ;)

But on a more general note it's not a good idea to use human make-up on resin dolls. Human make-up is oil based and may stain the resin permanently, even dissolve multiple layers of MSC and leave stains. Less chance of that on vinyl, btw, vinyl is more susceptible to solvents, like makers etc.
Rule of thumb; never use any thing remotely oil or solvent based on resin. Powder type pastels are good. as colored pencils and water & acrylic based paints. ANY cheap brand of these are safe, though you will be able to make better face-ups with better materials (read: more expensive) It's really worth to buy expensive pastels; they will last forever.

      Zoo Lady
, I'd love to see you first tries, when you're ready to show them!

    11. You can also go to an art supply store and just buy a few sticks of the soft pastels in colors you need- instead of investing in a whole set of every color in the rainbow. Most people end up just using a handful of colors anyway.

    12. *LOL* no, that makeup was too cheap to be anything but chalk, really. And that was 8 or more years ago; since then I have invested in good pastels and water color pencils. I used makeup once, that was all, along with some acrylic paints but did seal the vinyl before and during the process. The result, since rehomed:

Point being Zoo Lady, just jump in and try it! As mentioned, if it doesn't work you can wipe it. I still wipe mine these days over and over again. It can take awhile to get it right and working for that character. And Cirquemom is absolutely correct- I have more pastels I don't use than I do.

    13. Thank you for all the encouragement it is really appreciated I think its the eyebrows I fear the most.
I have an Elf doll K head which I am awaiting a Miro female body for so I wanted to mod it a bit with sanding to soften the features slightly. This will probably be my first for a face up as it was a very resonably priced head. The body should arrive tommorow or saturday so I can tell more once its all together.

    14. Chalyss your Lyeth face up is beautiful. Amazing first face up

    15. Oh, thank you!! I have since gotten a new camera too because, you know, no way could that horrible flashness be user fault! Riiiiiight...
Please post pics of the hybrid when it happens! I am very curious to see that pairing! Is it a new 62cm body or the old 60cm?

    16. Its the old 60cm body as they had one premade. I had ordered a male body for him but when it arrived the head did not fit and looked so wrong IMO so I have decided to make him a she as the head looked perfect proportions on my female Mirodoll body (despite the colour difference). I ended up getting a head to match the male body from them too as i cannot cope with headless bodies!. I will post some photos of both dolls once the female body arrives. I am curious too to see how she will turn out, I want her character to be strong but sensitive. Most of my other girls are very feminine so this will be a big change for me.

    17. My 68cm body arrived! It was so loosely strung I had to restring it. lol
Has anyone mod a Mirodoll body before? I'm thinking about sanding down the chest area as it is too big for my taste, and possibly a bit of the shoulder as well.

    18. Hi Arisa :) congrats for your arrival! You got the boy or girl body? $avage she made a good chest modding onto boy body, looks great to, i think it's posted somewhere. I will tell her to check the thread so she will reply to you directly!

    19. Zoo Lady please keep us posted about your project sound such interesting!
Arisa i did a mod on male chest it was a lot of work but turn nicely, if you wish i can share some pics here :)

    20. $abbatha Thank you! I got the boy body. ^^
$avage That would be so helpful! Thanks a lot. I ordered the body in normal color so I'm thinking that the color would become uneven where I sand down the chest, but with some blushing and tattoo, I think it'll be fine. It would still be nice to see your mod before I get my hands dirty though!

    21. I guess that with normal skin should turns out fine, anyway i agree that modding is a little delicate so better check pro and cons before start, cause once it's done well it's done and you can't come back.

    22. Love, love following this thread! Great pics of so many of the Miro's! My Lady Lavender (Miro Wind) is a fav bjd of mine, so much so a few weeks ago I ordered Wind in Burnt Sugar. There's only one example of that resin color in the Database. Does anyone else have a sculpt in Burnt Sugar, by any chance? I'd love to see some. :)

    23. Sure Arisa this is a pic of the last step of my work, just follow my link to main photstream and see progress step by step.
I think that with blushing everything will be fixed, i did the same on my boy and he was also burnt sugar!:thumbup

    24. Color is pretty interesting, thanks for sharing!

    25. Here is my Wind in burnt sugar.

    26. I have a doll in burnt sugar too, and she looks just like those in color; kind of a Jersey Shore/Pumpkin Saffron tone. Maybe golden would be a better word? She always looks more yellow in pics than she does to the naked eye.
Here's a pic of it next to an older DZ tan. (And it seems DZ's newer tan is quite a bit closer to the Miro Burnt Sugar than what is generally tough of as 'tan'.)

    27. Oh this is trange Chalyss, my boy is definitely more vibrant, is still orange/gold basically not too orange like SpiritDoll tan, but surely more dark than your pics.Maybe MiroDoll change resin batch pretty often? As is almost 10 months that my boy is displayed so exposed to light, sun and such and his color didn't changed that much from day i've got his body...

    28. In person, she looks more like Molliebean's girl, I think. For some reason, she doesn't photograph well. Still, she's not as vibrant as your boy! I suspect Miro doesn't get the same color mix each time they mix their batches.

Also, no set date yet for the 70cm girl's head release. They're still tweaking her. Miro also feels the DoA hybrid and Miro data base is enough for a gallery-type, but still extend the invite for them to make a forum off their site if people would like that.

    29. Ooo!!! It's wild to hear and see the differences in color. Crazy too that photographing the burnt sugar color can be a real trick. Now I'm super anxious to see just what version of the color mine will be! Thanks SO much everybody!!!

Molliebean, your Wind is truly lovely. The way you set up the picture really brings her to life, too! Your terrific pic helped me decide to order mine.

Zoo Lady, your Wind is beautiful in the transparent resin! Very nice box opening and information. If you take pics of her with a wig and outfit, we'd love to see. :)

    30. April, your Valdrin is IN-credible!! So glad you put him in the database. WOW!!!

    31. I see to b honest Burnt sugar resin it pretty hard to show in pics, it depends from light and also from flash a lot of things.
Honestly i own 2 dolls from different batches in burnt sugar and both are almost the same shading but one came late summer, while the other winter not sure if is still the same as year i get my dolls.

    32. Molliebean- your wind is really lovely. :aheartbea

    33. Popped out for an hour this morning and missed my delivery. I will have to wait till tommorow for my body now.

    34. EEERRRGGGHH!!!! I hate it when that happens! Sometimes I think the delivery men hide and wait until the exact second that you leave...then they sneak up and put a note on your door saying you missed them.

    35. In Shenzhen, it seldom happens, the postman will call the receiver to make sure the receiver is home, or arrange a delivery time with the receiver, so the parcel can be delivered in one time. Now in some residence communities cell express cabinet is used, it is more convenient and efficient.

    36. Off topic, I know, but Mangotree do they speak Cantonese in Shenzhen? I was learning Cantonese and when I decided on where I was going to teach English, I was thinking of Shenzhen. I went to Taiwan instead. *L* Just curious. And that whole call-to-arrange delivery sounds pretty nice!

My mail deliverer puts in those notices that they tried to deliver my package and no one was home to accept, but they don't try at all to deliver. Someone is ALWAYS home- I live and work in my house. So I have to leave a note in the mailbox telling the deliverer to PLEASE not make me drive to the PO to pick up the item, I AM home. I wouldn't mind so much if they checked the 'too lazy to get out of the truck to check and even see if someone is home' box, but they check the 'no one was home' box. Liars! *coughs* But I digress. ENNAhoo! Yeah.

More pics please! *desperately trying to get back on track here* Oh, I wanted to share that for me, personally, for the Miro boy bodies (both 60cm and 68cm), 5mm string for the body works awesome and 4mm for the arms keeps them incredibly poseable and they can hold their poses very well. Here's an example:
He could hold that pose forever.
      And over the shoulder:

Those are jointed hands on a Miro boy, modded wrist joints to be rounder.

    37. Parcel arrived. I have photos but will get them posted later today I am off to help fix storm damage from yesterdays gales.

    38. Wow Chalyss thanks for sharing and your boy is such interesting, love his costume too!
Well delivery issue with lazy bellhops, it happened to ma several time expecially with airmail and small packet...such upsetting...

    39. Chalyss thank you for the info on elastic size both my new bodies need restringing,
Your boy is amazing, i love those hands
