So basically, I' m making my very own bjd right now and I' m in the sculpting process. I' m already searching for casting services and I' ve got a question, because most doll artists plan to sell their creation one day but I don' t, so is there a casting company that makes 1-2 casts? Because I only found the prices for 10-20 casts o I wasn' t sure if they actually provide a service with a not so large amount of casts. (I mean I can just calculate the price/10 but I' m not sure of there is an option to pay for 1 cast) so if there are any good and cheap casting companies you know please tell me!
The reason why most casting companies have a minimum requirement of 10 casts is because of time, effort and materials spent on mold making. You have to produce a mold regardless of how many pieces you actually want to cast. To make the order more cost effective and appealing companies will ask a minimum of 10 dolls per order. You probably could convince a caster to produce 2 casts instead of 10, but I would think cost will be closer to 1/2 rather than 1/10 of original pricing. I saw a Russian casting service a while ago that required only 5 casts, but I cannot find them now, maybe someone else remembers any details on that company.
Maybe you could commission someone to make a mold and cast 1 or 2 dolls for you... someone who has done it for themselves already and knows what they're doing? Because yeah I don't think a casting company would make just 1 or 2 casts for reasons mentionned by CrazyAnna :/ Or, try making a preorder for 8 or 9 dolls, and keep the 1 or 2 last ones for yourself?
10 tends to be the minimum. I’ve commissioned head sculpts and have always had to go for 10 casts. They might be able to do different colours or effects for you though? I often go for that.
They're located in China. As BJD company they're on the market for 10+ years. I personally used their casting services about 2 years ago. My advice to ask them about a single doll casting is because they gave me a quote not per batch but per head. Their Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/yanbing.yang.16
following if any one has more casting companies to reccomend. My list: FDoll Haru Casting Island Doll Resinsoul?
I see a lot of artists who work with small batches of dolls cast their dolls via dolls_casting_service (instagram account) . They at least offer to cast one or two dolls for the artist to play around with and make promo pictures before (if ever) starting a preorder and they offer small batches with different color resin. So they could be usefull to ask about. And a complete new casting service called bertacastadoll (instagram) who is the partner of a doll artist (little rebel doll) and has produced nice looking casts for them. Since they just opened shop and still have few customers they might be willing to cast only a few for you? You can always ask
