Contest ABJD Video Contest [Video Creation] - WINNERS UP

Jul 9, 2011

1. ABJD Video Contest
In honor of our forum's 7th Anniversary, we are inviting our members to create videos using their Asian Ball-Jointed Dolls. The theme for this year's contests is "Me and My Shadow."

Description

Members are challenged to create a video using Asian Ball-Jointed Dolls. You may use any interpretation of "shadow" that you wish. If you choose an obscure reference, please be sure to include an explanation in the submission description.

This contest is open to all members (of all ability levels!) who are in good standing who have joined on or before June 30th, 2011. DoA staff may enter for exhibition purposes only - they may not compete for contest prizes, but they may share their work. Show us your very best!

How to Enter

We will provide a limited FTP upload for video submissions beginning in August; we will also accept some submissions via email.

There has been a slight change of plans in how we're handling uploads.

Submit your entry information ASAP using the entry form.
Your video does not have to be already completed in order for you to fill out the form. Once you have submitted the form, I will be sending you a PM that includes instructions on how to upload your video. You don't have to upload your video until the deadline, but you will need this upload information in order to do so, so you must submit your entry form as soon as possible.

Please let us know when you fill out the entry form what your inspiration was and what sculpt(s) you have featured in the video. You must include your DoA username in the entry form.

Video Formats & Contest Rules

ENTRIES NOW CLOSED

1) Each member may enter only ONE video. If multiple members work on a video as a team, the entry may only be submitted under the name of one member.

2) Videos must be at least 1.5 minutes in length, and may not exceed 10 minutes. The file format must be .AVI (acceptable codecs: Uncompressed, divX, Xvid), .MPG (acceptable codecs: MPEG), or .MP4 (acceptable codecs: MPEG4). Files must conform with the National Television System Committee or NTSC standards of 29.97 frames per second, and be no smaller than 480p and no larger than 720p. Files may not exceed 2 GB in size.

3) Videos may not violate copyright - that means that your video must either use footage and audio that is entirely of your own creation, or that any footage and audio used must be either public domain or licensed in such a way that derivative works are permitted (EG: Creative Commons Attribution/Share and Share-Alike, etc). The video itself may not contain credits (any credits/attributions that you wish/need to include should be sent with the video, as text, and will be checked for identifying information and included in the comments section of the video when it is uploaded by the contest organizer).

4) The video may not contain your name, username, email, watermark, or other personally identifying information.

5) Do not post this work elsewhere prior to completion of voting; doing so will remove your entry from the contest. As with previous contests, we wish for the entries to be anonymous in order to make voting more fair.

6) Entries may be made using stop-motion filming, still photo slideshows, live-action filming, or a combination of these. All entries must contain at least one on-topic doll - if off-topic dolls are used, they must not be the primary focus of the video and must be shown with on-topic dolls. Photo editing and minimal computer or hand-animation is permitted, but entries must feature dolls that are not computer or hand-drawn.

7) Entries must be received by 11:59 PM on August 20th, US Eastern Daylight Time.

Voting

Entries will be posted on DoA on August 24th for voting. Voting will run from August 24th to August 29th.

The winner will be decided by member vote via voting forms. In the event of a tie, Kiyakotari will cast the deciding vote.

Prizes

The creator of the entry with the most votes will receive a blank Dikadoll Finn (normal skin, pink), generously donated by Mint on Card.

The second and third-place winners will receive forum upgrades to double PM inbox size!

All entrants will receive a graphic badge for their signatures.

Please note that the first place winner is responsible for postage.

CLARIFICATIONS THAT HAVE BEEN POSTED THROUGHOUT THE THREAD

1. The creator of the video/person entering the video in the contest does not have to own all of the dolls featured in the video. However, each individual doll should appear in only one video. If multiple individuals in a group of friends want to make separate videos, then they will need to make sure that they are working separately, and that individual dolls being used are each shown in only one video.

2. If a participant has permission from the creator of copyright-protected source material (including both video and audio) to use that source material, then they will need to contact the Moderators via the Ask the Moderators subforum to show proof of this permission. If this can be proven, then it will be allowed under the "derivative works permitted" aspect of licensure (a license can be personal/limited, and does not have to be general, for it to be allowed).

3. Photos used in videos cannot have been posted elsewhere, as that would allow people to easily identify the video creator. Pictures that have been taken previously are allowed in the video, but only if they have not been shared publicly.

2. Can audio - specifically music - be used if you have been granted permission by the composer/performer to use it for this purpose? If so, what would you want as documentation of said permission?
Thanks.

3. I have a question, what if a member wishes to allow another member to use their doll in a video? As long as the members are not collaborating in order to win the contest would that be okay?

For instance, I will make my own video and likely only use my own doll in it. But, what if my friend needed another doll for her video and wanted to use him in her video as well, would that be alright? I don't think this will necessarily happen, but for those of us who only own one doll I think this is a relevant question.

(Also, I understand if this is not allowed as people might use this as a loophole, but it can't hurt to ask!)

4. I have the same request as starpunzel. But the piece of music I have, I was given permission to use in a video any time I wish, but I'm not sure I have the original e-mail from the creator of said piece of music any more. (The only way to get the music file was directly from the creator anyways, as it was inbedded in a flash file.)

5. Is there anyway you would consider changing your minimum time limit?? Having taken animation and film classes, 1.5 min. long film requires alot of time to make (especially animation!). Are you willing to consider making the min. time limit 30 seconds? You can make great films that are 30 seconds long!

Or perhaps maybe you can extend the deadline a tiny bit?

Just a thought! More of a wish. ;-)

6. PaintBlack, at this point the time requirements do stand. Part of the challenge for this contest is working under time constraints. The videos are due 42 days from the date the contest was posted - this time period is tight enough that participants will certainly be feeling some pressure, but is also long enough that the videos should be completely doable if people get cracking on them. The most important thing is to not procrastinate! While some of the kinds of animation accepted in the videos (such as stop-motion) are very time consuming, others take much less time (such as slide-show style narratives). It would not be fair to have separate time requirements for the different kinds of animation, and the lengths chosen were decided on because they fall into the middle ground.

starpunzel and vampireanneke, if a participant has permission from the creator of source material (including both video and audio) to use that source material, then they would need to contact the Moderators via the Ask the Moderators subforum to show proof of this permission. If this can be proven, then it would fall under the "derivative works permitted" aspect of licensure (source material does not have to allow derivative works for everyone/the general public - having permission to use material that is otherwise restricted is also acceptable). However, reporting a verbal contract or quoting an eMail communication is not going to be adequate proof. These situations will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis, so again, please use the Ask the Moderators subforum if you are planning to use material that has been specifically licensed to you.

delicate disaster, the creator of the video/person entering the video in the contest does not have to own all of the dolls featured in the video. However, each doll should appear in only one video. If multiple individuals in a group of friends want to make separate videos, then they will need to make sure that they are working separately, and that the dolls being used are each only being used in one video.

7. I am pretty confused on the music subject, are we allowed to use music that does not belong to use, like something that would be produced on a CD from a famous artists because it would come under fair use? Or are will not allowed to use any music unless we have contacted the original owner, because if that was a famous artist it would pretty much be impossible.

8. What about music that the creator has stated on ther website that it is free to use, as long as you don't use it for profit or reproduce it in any way in order to make a profit? Royalty Free Music which in my experience, is music you can use without permission as long as you don't do any of the above (make a profit)

9. Lulu Rose, music by arists who are releasing their work under a "free-to-use" license is fine. An example of the type of license you describe would be a Creative Commons Non-Commercial license, and it would be acceptable to use a work that was licensed in such a way.

karla-chan, unless the music has fallen into the public domain (due to age) or the original creator has licensed their music for public use (examples of such include some Creative Commons licenses, though each one has a specific set of parameters, so you would need to check the specific license the creator used), or granted the member who wishes to use it specific permission to do so (in which case, the member must prove that this permission has been granted), then no, music made by other people cannot be used. (Example: Unless Lady Gaga is gracious enough to give someone permission to use one of her songs in their video, then they can't use her songs, because those songs are copyrighted to her and her record label.)

Because there are no lawyers on the moderation team, and none of us are copyright specialists, we are not going to try to determine what does and does not fall under the Fair Use clause (Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976). Although under this clause allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research, the videos made for this contest would walk the edge of that line (being not clearly part of any of the above categories, and having the potential for profit in the form of prizes).

In short, if audio or video footage is not public domain, free-to-use, specifically licensed to you, or of your own original creation, then it cannot be used in these videos.

10. Thank you that has cleared things up very nicely.

11. about the music subject, on youtube.com there is a list of artisit who have given permission to use there song in there video for entertainment only....I can grab you the list if you want. The requirement of use of the songs, credit and artist name must be put in the end or beginning of video or in video comments.

12. Red-wolf-Ink, that's a great idea! Those songs would be fine to use for these videos, but anyone who uses them must remember that credits can't be included in the videos themselves. They need to be sent along with the videos so that they can be posted as part of the comments.

13. It's not clear in the rules, but since the theme is 'ME and my shadow', are we allowed to use video of ourselves, or others in our video? (Along with the dolls ofcourse). I also assume that the doll footage (or footage with a doll in it), so be in atleast 50% of the footage.

14. If your interpretation of the theme includes the need to show humans with the dolls, then that is fine. However, in keeping with Den of Angels rules for photos and videos shown on forum, make sure than any humans shown have given you permission to record them. (EG: Don't go to the mall and videotape a crowd of people without their consent.) And the doll(s) should be the primary focus of the video, not accessories for the human(s).

15. Can you use photos you've previously taken and posted provided that there are newer ones incorporated?

16. Photos used in the video cannot have been posted elsewhere, as that would allow people to easily identify the video creator. (People may of course still recognize dolls - that is unavoidable.) Pictures that have been taken previously are allowed in the video, but only if they have not been shared publicly.

17. ... ^^;

Yay for editing.

18. Where we do we upload/submit, is there an entry form that we should be pointed to?

19. The submission information will be up closer to the due date.

20. Here is another resource for those who are still struggling with finding audio for their videos: https://creativecommons.org/wired

All the the songs listed there have been licensed in such a way as to allow derivative works to be created (Creative Commons Sampling Plus and Noncommercial Sampling Plus licenses).

21. hey ^^ I have what a feel is a really STUPID question... but I need to ask it! "1.5" minutes... thats 1 min 30 seconds right? not 1 min 5 secs..? And I know there is like only a week left but I'm gona try anyway :P

22. Yes, 1.5 minutes is 1 minute, 30 seconds.

Additionally, for those who are waiting on it, the FTP upload information will be updated soon.

23. Here's another stupid question.. I just looked at the form and how do we know what the email address to send it to is? Also, what's FTP? :sweat

24. FTP = File Transfer Protocol. Meaning being able to upload the file to a location.

25. Me a week and a half ago: PFFFF I have plenty of time to do this!
Me today: HOLYCRAPHOLYCRAPHOLYCRAP.

26. Okay, so there has been a slight change of plans in how we're handling uploads.

Submit your entry information ASAP using this form. Your video does not have to be already completed in order for you to fill out the form. Once you have submitted the form, I will be sending you a PM that includes instructions on how to upload your video. You don't have to upload your video until the deadline, but you will need this information in order to do so, so you must submit your entry form as soon as possible.

27. omg i just finished my video >.< I hope I get the information to turn it in time!

28. Okay...I'm a tard and don't quite understand how the audio is supposed to work. EVERYTHING is copyrighted/licensed...so is the video just supposed to be silent?

29. When filling out the form do we need to put the Doll Models in the Description?

30. Everyone who has submitted an entry thus far has been sent information on how to upload their video. If you intend on entering and have not yet filled out the entry form, please do so ASAP! I am not going to be able to be online tomorrow evening, so if you submit your entry form right before the contest ends, you are not going to receive the entry information in time to upload your video. Fill out the form now!

The contest ends in just over 24 hours, everyone!

Only if you want it to be silent. There is plenty of audio available online that has been licensed using terms that permit derivative works. There are also audio clips available (musical and non) that fall into the public domain, and thus are no longer protected by copyright. Some resources for finding these kinds of audio have been posted earlier in the thread.

Yes, please.

31. i´m super sad ;_; i made a video and i was nearly finished .. and then my programm shut down and it only saved on the half video,,, well i think i´m out ........

32. Rule of video editing. SAVE SAVE SAVE. Sucks nu123. Maybe after the contest you'll post your vid (what was saved) so we can see it.

33. for sure ;w; ~ video editing wouldn have been that bad.... but i made an animation in flash with my doll in it... so all my drawings and doll animation also are lost ... well ... my bad xD ;.;

34. Great, I was a tad occupied, and did not think of checking this thread out until a few hours ago. Now, after the last work is finished, I think I'm not gonna be able to submit it....I only get the Error message on the form.
Pitty, not that it is the vid of the year, or something, but I even tried my hand at composing for it.
And yes, Save save save
Why is it the first thing I forget about vid editing?
Don't know..... And I have had my share of "oh sh.." experiances ^^.
In my case it wasn't that bad, I could redo it more or less quickly, but it sucks non the less.

Edit: Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't know why I'm still up and awake, but thank you!!!!!!!!!
Vid uploaded.

35. Just a note, I'm online this evening after all, so if people are having last-minute problems with submission, I'll be able to help.

36. Are the entries being posted here??

37. The entries and voting information will be put up soon, have no fear. ^__^

38. *excited* eep!

39. Voting is now up! There are a few entrants who still need to get back to me with information about the audio they used (they have been PM'd), but all entries are currently included in the voting.

40. I'm cringing that people have not had time to watch all the videos. Hopefully they are not voting on just the first few videos they have seen. Yes it's atleast 30 mins of time to spend to watch all videos, but it's unfair to vote without having watched all videos as well.

41. I'm worrying about that too but I'm hoping we all take the time to watch them all! I'm really excited to find out who's won!

42. Ditto. :c It would be a shame if people only watch the first few....
If you don't have time to watch them all in one sitting watch a few now and watch the rest later! This whole contest is overflowing with awesome talent! :D

43. i watched through all voted for those who caugh me :)

44. The results are in, and we have our winners!

In first place is darthmermer, with Entry #6, Shadow Play. However, as darthmermer has already won a major prize (a doll) in a previous year's contest, they are not eligible for a prize in this year's contests.

In second place is Kajiruki, with Entry #12, Meet Your Shadow. Kajiruki will be receiving the Dikadoll Finn, donated by Mint on Card.

In third place is FlightOfIcarus, with Entry #10, Death of Shadows. FlightOfIcarus will be receiving a forum upgrade to double their PM inbox size.

In fourth place is megdalena, with Entry #11, Dance with a Dalek. Megdalena will be receiving a forum upgrade to double their PM inbox size.

All entrants will be receiving a graphic to put in their signatures. If other entrants wish to identify themselves and their videos, they are welcome to do so!

Congratulations, everyone! All of the entries were truly impressive, and showed what creative people we have in this hobby. I really look forward to seeing what everyone comes up with in the future!

45. Will the number of votes for each entry be shown? Congrats all who won!

46. Oh my goodness second place? I'm shocked! I really didn't think I would be a winner in anyway! Wow, just wow! Congrats to the other winners too! When I saw the others I was so nervous!

47. Naerr, I would be curious to, because my video had almost 50 hits less the other videos. And more then 100 hits less then another video. I would be curious to see what sort of translation of 'votes' to 'hits' percentages people's videos had.

48. Mine was the second entry, I haven't checked the view number yet. x,D

*Nvm, just did, 214, it's more than some, less than others. I'm super curious now!

49. Mine was the last entry, number #13 'Shadow of a Shadow That is Me', and had only 132 hits.

50. -whips calculator out- I hope the votes will be released! I'm ready to math it up! Ohhh I'm such a math geek.

51. Aw, that's strange, Anneke, I watched it! It was very dramatic.

52. Thank you to everyone who voted for me. Congrats to everyone, the videos were wonderful.

-DarthMerMer

53. Congratulations to all the winners! Please post your videos somewhere else on the web so that we can still watch them, and show them to our friends. :)

54. Of course, I'm sorry, I had totally forgotten to include the numbers in the announcement post! I apologize, I have been a bit distracted lately due to some personal health problems.

There were a total of 135 votes. The breakdown is as follows:

I am guessing that videos that had more views than the number of votes are the result of people watching videos repeatedly, or showing them to friends. :) Of course, it is also possible that they were viewed by people who did not vote in the contest. Additionally, when someone views a video on YouTube using a mobile device (smart phone) it does not increase the number of views displayed in the hit counter on YouTube.

55. Wow that's an insanely lower amount of votes in general than I thought there'd be! The play counts are so different! I thought they'd be a bit more similar!

56. BAHAHA~! No one voted on my video! XD I guess it really was that bad! That's okay though. ^-^

Congrats to the winners! :aheartbea

57. Congratulations darthmermer! Your video was AMAZING! My favorite! How long did it take you to make that? And what did you use to black out the "shadow"??? (super curious about that!)

Congratulations to Kajiruki and FlightOfIcarus as well! Thanks everyone that voted for my video and also thanks just for watching it! I had tons of fun making it! :D
