a wispy forest soul

Aug 17, 2011

    1. hello everyone :)

I found this forum on DOA when I initially found the bjd hobby. I joined and then promptly fell victim to real life and the demands of the corporate world. So, I just reactivated my account yesterday and I am so excited to be here. :)

I've been working on a jointed doll, off and on, for a little while. I made two before her...one out of La Doll paperclay, which was a complete and utter failure. The second out of Sculpey, which faired a little better. But I hadn't even come to the end of that one before I started my third. I don't know why I do that to myself, I've always got to have multiple projects going at once because life just isn't complicated enough, I guess. Who needs sleep, right? :XD

So, here is the third try so far. I used Super Sculpey and it was definitely NOT the correct material to use. But it was the only material I had available. It is such a delicate and fickle material. If you even glance at it the wrong way, it falls apart. Almost like a sudden and defiant form of Sculpey mutiny.

I have learned a lot from this one, so far, and will choose a different sculpting material and process for the next one.

    2. Well it certainly doesn't look like your Sculpey gave you any problems! I love her proportions and shape, and the tree bits are great! I really, really love the tree branch hands! I hope you find a sculpting material you like, because you need to make more cool dolls! :D (And it's perfectly alright to have multiple projects going at once- sleep is highly over-rated!)

    3. wow she looks absolutly lovely! love the tree hands and feet too. I love her full shape and face

    4. Thank you both so much for your kind comments. :blush

I just spent the evening (uhhhh morning? my god! i did not realize what time it was!!! lol) looking at some of the incredible art here on this forum. There are so many truly amazing artists here, and the work that I am seeing is just beyond skillful. My poor little tree girl is kind of embarrassed now, at her simpleness. But I will keep learning how to make her better, now that I am here. :o

Annarchy, the Sculpey seems ok to work with. I like that it can be carved and sanded. But it seems so fragile after it is baked, so I am now having a difficult time fine tuning the joints and smoothing her out, etc. I may have baked it wrong, I'm not sure. I did some research on different polymer oven hardening clays and I learned that Cernit has the most flexibility, highest tension resistance, and least brittleness. So I am going to try that next I think.
      :)

    5. Omgosh, I LOVE her round hiney!!
      Great job....you go girl!

    6. GAH! I love her tree feet and tree hands. She's the prettiest Ent-wife I've ever seen. :3
She's got a pretty bum too. :3 Keep it simple & I hope it's third time lucky!

    7. She is looking really nice. I like how you did the feet and hands. And yes, as others have said. She has a nice hiney. Looking forward to seeing more.

    8. Gosh you guys...thanks so very much. What a bunch of beautiful souls you are here. :blush

And I'm glad you guys like her hiney, lol. I think I have a thing for exaggerated bodies right now. Its coming out in my other art, as well.

Here are a couple more pics while I procrastinate some more about doing the un-fun stuff on her...like sanding and smoothing. :/

If you have suggestions...I don't cry easily. :XD I am here to learn.

    9. You must have a lot of patience working with Super Sculpey. I just about lost my mind on it...haha But she is looking lovely.

    10. I'm looking forward to seeing more of her face! For all the unusual proportioning, she seems to have a nice stance and rhythm to her body. Love the concept.

    11. Beautiful work! Beautiful proportions ^_^

    12. I love her body lines. The roots are also fabulous.

    13. She is a beauty, I love the root-feet and branches for hands :) I like her proportions, she's very interesting to look at!

    14. Awesome!
But aren't that footh a bit bad for the poseability?

    15. Wooow, this is looking so good! Love her! Can't wait to see more! :D

    16. Wow, very nice! I love the tree lady. The limbs are fantastic. Can't wait to see her completed with eyes and such.

    17. She is beautiful already. What a unique and novel doll she is. You are doing a really good job. Remember the saying, Sometimes, less is more. Thanks for sharing.

    18. She's beautiful!

How tall is she? Do you plan on casting her?

I look forward to seeing her finished!
