This is Manasa. 009_1493 by ofbutterflies, on Flickr I made her for a local BJD costume competition. The rules were that I had to keep the project secret, so no WIP thread for this one. My first try at casting. I only did the tail, the rest is Luts & DOD. But it was a good trial project. I'm sticking to plaster for now. I want to get better at making molds and using them, before I go for resin. She has 87 segments, of which 82 were cast from the mold I made. I cast about 120 segments but many broke. That's plaster for yah. The mold tore in the end (don't they always?) so I had to stop at 217cm of tail More views: http://www.flickr.com/photos/46749764@N03/sets/72157625270619121/
Not too surprising; I only put it up yesterday. The mold was silicone, the tail is plaster except for the end 5 links, those are DAS clay (=local available craft clay) Glad you liked it!
Wow, very interesting! I like the texture you achieved on the plaster, it looks quite organic. Did you win the contest?
no, I did not win. but that is not too surprising; homemade BJD is an acquired taste and this was a normal BJD competition. Something more mainstream won. People who have never even thought about how a BJD is produced won't understand what it takes to make a homemade BJD. I got 3rd place. 1st was an MSD dresses as a pixy with beautiful wings etc on a rock on a turntable. I never did find out who got 2nd. The level of entries was very high. But no-one does homemade BJD there so I was the odd one out.
WOW :-O That is realy a perfekt bjd :-D You did a goooooood job on that one :-D She almost remind me of Rapunzel ;-)
I realy loooove that girl :-D I would love to see some more pictures of her and her loooooooong hair :-D
I'm going to have to think about what I'm going to do with her. At the moment she 'wearing' the torso & arms of another doll, who is wanting her body parts back.... Can't really blame her. Also she's a little big to display in my house. At the moment she lives in a suitcase. Make taking pix a little hard. .... The future is a little unclear here....
i dont know what the other entries looked like, but from the loks of this YOU should have won. hands down!
Thanks! These things are (when not judged by a knowledgeable jury) entirely a matter of taste. So I'm not too upset. I'm working on the next entry now. It's now going to be a fancy molding like this though.
Biofreak659, sorry for the late reply. The plaster is not holding up, but I never expected it to. I'm hoping to redesign her in 3D some time...
.... And I just saw I missed Joankagami's question. There are 80 cast segments and 5 sculpted segemts. I had to cast about 120 to get 80 undamaged segments.
