20–39cm Dolls A tiny man.

Apr 15, 2022

    1. With my tiny ladies finished and my sidetrip in the shape of an orc out of the way I have started to focus on making a tiny male doll.

It started with a simple plan to make a male torso that can fit the female legs and arms.

To get started I cast the female torso in an acrylic resin product called Plasticrete and modding it into a male. The nice thing about this resin is that as long as you pay attention and don't over do it, it can stand temperatures high enough to bake polymer clay, making modding very easy. It also sands very well.
Here is the torso with some basic polymer fill in (the mold wasn't made for this resin so it had problems filling up all the way):

As I was working on the torso I decided I wanted to make new legs as well. I was never completely happy with the knees of the old legs and I wouldn't mind making them a bit more unisex while I'm at it. A slightly larger range of motion in the tigh joint wouldn't hurt either.
      So new legs it is.
I didn't base these on the old legs as I did with the troso but instead opted to sculpt them from scratch.
I use an exposed double joint this time to hopefully avoid some of the gap I got in the old knees. I also hope this will make the leg parts easier to cast as there will be less of a thin wall to fill in. I still need to mind shape and thickness, but at least I know a bit more of what I am doing this time.
Sideview on the new knees, still very much in progress, but they look promising:

Here is a sit-test to make sure that the tigh joints work, but we'll see what happens to the balance once arms and head is added:

And despite tha fact that the doll still has no ankle joint and so can't strung with real feet, it stands pretty vell, both straight and with a pelvis tilt.

There is also a head in the making, I call him Viggo.
Here he is next to the Milly head:

      And from the front:

It's all still very much a work in progress, but I wanted so share what I have been doing. :)

    2. I've been working mostly on the knees. I already had a pretty good range of movement, next step was stability, especcially sideways stability.
Here is an image of the knees with more material added. The dolls right knee (furthest from the camera) is in the first stage of that and the left (closest) have had most of the surplus removed, giving a nice trasition the the leg parts.

And here is a pose test. The legs holds this position without too much trouble, despite light tension and the fact that the clamp is way heavier than a foot. This looks promising.

There is still some fine tuning and some shaping to make it look more like a knee, to be done.

I have also worked a bit on the head. Mostly on making sure the head back fits and getting the neck joint to work well. I want the heads to be interchangable between the male and female body, so there has been a bit of headswapping and testing done to get that right. In the same process I have done a lot of work on the inside of the head to get it to a somewhat smooth finish. I'm not overly worried about perfection there, since it will so rarely me seen, but a smooth-ish surface will tend to cast better, so there is that.
I've also worked some on the face itself, but I still have some way to go.

    3. Viggo is coming together nicely. Today I was able to test string the full doll. Arms, hands and feet are the same as the female body.
Ignore the clamp in the back, it's just there to hold some surplus arm elastic and does not interfere with the legs.

There is still a fair bit of work to do on his head, but otherwise he is not far from ready for primer.

    4. The priming stage has begun. His head is coming along nicely and the other parts are not too far behind.

    5. I admire your work and am looking forward to see more of him.

    6. Thanks @JennyM !
I am in the seemingly perpetual priming stage for most of the new parts now. Still some work to do on the knees to make them both pretty and give them every chance to cast well.

    7. Things are going well.
I've had some good luck with the weather here, making priming easier a quicker.
The pieces are getting close to ready for casting, one after the other.
      Here is the torso.

    8. All the new parts are primed and ready for the next step.

      Mold making starts today! :)

    9. Moldmaking went well and this time I even remembered to snap a picture. This part of the process is not typically camera friendly since it tends to be stressful and messy, but I found a calm moment.

Finished molds on the left, just poured on the right and the obligatory messy worktable in the background.

And parts are now starting to come out fo the molds. Here is the first good head, right out of the mold.

Sorry about the ugly photos, I'll try to get some prettier pictures once he is starting to come together a bit more.

    10. This project is drawing to a close.

I have now cast the finished prototype and even if there are a few things to tweak before he is in actual production, over all the sculpting and creation phase of this project is over an so is no longer suitable for this forum.

      So here he is.
      Everybody, meet Viggo!
