oh hai guise. i haven't posted here in so long holy poop. but i swear to you, i am looking through all the marvelous projects that have been posted and aw mans you people put me to shame, i swear. SO uhh i posted this thread a long long long time ago, and i came back to find that i had deleted all the photos from my webspace. whups. so here is a better rehashing of the whole thing. SERENITY ROSE about three years ago, i got it into my head that i was going to build a nice, big doll of serenity rose, the comic book and animation character of a very good friend of mine (aaron alexovich). ages beforehand, we're talking maybe 17-19 years ago, aaron had seen this ragdoll -> that i made, and fell in love - and axed me to make a sera dolly. i was thrilled and enthused and awed that he thought i could do it. so i set about to. only... i made the body, rooted five million individually tied bits of embroidery floss for hair, and clothed her, and gave her eyes.... but then i took her with me to ireland, and subsequently left her there. i was sad. so! three years ago lalala i started making premier sera. i always give up on drawing the whole doll and mirror the one side i have drawn.
i started out this way - straws and a little bit of styrofoam. then i tried the head and torso. man, that head was rough and rancid. that torso was rough, too, but we shant talk about that.
man, would ye lookit that head! the nose, the eyes, the roughness! pfuh. bewbs for my child! then i shaved off her nose, because that just would NOT cut it.
i was worried her boobs were too big, because the character is very demure. aww. i used my eye reamers as stand-in for the ball-joints at the shoulders. i got so excited. then i started playing with blank eyes. sera has graphitey irises and no pupils, so.
i like that nose MUCH better! i like them eye sockets better! she's gettin' there. plastic surrrrrgery i just keep getting excited over this child.
oh my GOODNESS. so much better now. lookit that little nooooose. i started to cut that torso apart! nooooo! so scary! i thought i would BREAK it and lose so much progress!!!
i have a little basket of hair. so i played. and played with some charcoal on her lips and nose. i carved and carved and sanded and carved and made a big fat mess. stupid ears finally! yayyyyy!
terrible rudimentary legs and arms! ARRR! i sculpted a new bum for her. bum bum. i pieced her together with straws and floral wire. i couldn't TAKE it.
and here is what i have so far. i strung her together with actual elastic just because i had to. I HAD TO. all her pieces, and the messsssss. i have the hair i need! aaaaaaaaaa
i know i shouldn't yet, i should finish the main doll first, but i am very impatient. this be what i am working on at this moment. her wig will be SO NICE. i will sit and work on it while on my dialysis machine at night.
ahahaHA so. since the images are refusing to work sometimes, i may just put this whole thing up on my website. i have it up as an article on my patreon, but nobody wants to loves me there yet, SO. if'n anyone would care at all to see the images here, go to Index of /d/e/deadpanland/dolls/sera everything posted here is listed there.
Looking at your progress is awesome! And don't worry about the photos, it looks like they are suffering from our randomly-not-working issue, but the good news is they will randomly start working again too!
yayyyy i wanted to make sure to properly document my process this time, because i am making this doll for my friend, aaron, and i want to show him all the work that i did! XD i am a conceited so-and-so. i am hoping against all hope that i will be able to afford to buy the silicone and resin i will need to cast her, once i am done with her. because aaaa i would love to be able to share her. and sending the premier doll prototype across the country seems like it would be far too risky.
so i have picked up working on this dollie yet AGAIN... and i am just so proud of the rudimentary leg-joint i have made. a lot needs to be done yet to even just this leg, but the joint works, the knee bends well, it's kinda sturdy (i will further ensturdify it) and aaaaaa joints! PICTURES LATERRR
lawl so i don't know why i am so proud of this blasted unfinished leg. but here it is. just IMAGINE the pictures i will have when i ever finish this doll! deng!
arrrr i went to the horsepiddle and had a fun stay. the whole time i was in there, i was jonesing after my sculpting tools and clay. XD BUT ANYWAY now i have a foot, and i have started sanding her. she's looking so good I AM SO EXCITED Y'ALL a bit rough here a more refined foot, carved and smoothed a bit... and looooook it fits the end of her leg aaaaa
everyone, i am far, FAR too excited now. so close to being done! just need a bit more work on this foot, then hands, then SANDING, then priming! then!!
You are making good progress! Can she stand yet? There's always a bit of magic when you put in eyes for the first time, isn't there? Oh, and the feet looks great.
i've still got to fine-tune her pelvis, so that her legs won't splay out. i might have to make a whole 'nother pelvis. making proper joints is hard!
it is another day! and so! i present to you! a tiny, rough han'. replete with a tiny rare-earth magnet for to hold stuff! SUCH IDEAS i have for this dollie, ohhhhhh jigglypuff, she's going to be marvelous.
i know i am boring but each time i finish some little thing about my dollie i get so excited. and now! OH SO EXCITE. just a bit more fine-tuning and sanding, and her first stage will be done!! then i can finally work on her wig and clothes and priming and such. ohhhhhhhhhhhh.
Be excited! That is a perfect picture of a doll in progress. Put together so you can see the promise of the whole, but still with parts in different stages. You even have a proper work table mess in background! If this photo does not sum up the pure joy of doll making, I don't know what does.
a smawl update.... i was all gung-ho and working properly on my dollie when... i broke my right hand. :C it is still in a splint right now, but i am going to start (continue) to sand her tomorrow. sigh. ohhhh, these frail bodies of ours! where is my automaton body??
uuuuugh i am such a dullard! i never work on my doll. but, well, life is hectic, and i have a garbage bin full of health problems to look after, so those are my excuses. so there. dramatic sera is dramatic. and i am FINALLY working on her wig! i chose to go the extra painful and laborious route of using Whispering Grass's fantastic method of making a lace-wig-kinda, using tulle and glue and a needle. aaaa my fingers hurt!!
