here is an update for anyone who may be interested. i found out that the reason that the odor was so strong, is that the head was cast the same day, i think, and boxed and shipped immediately. the fumes did not have time to dissipate. it has been about 12 hours since i took her out of the box, and she is way, way, better! the fumes are hardly noticeable now. apparently Shinydoll is a small company that casts and ship their own heads. they don't use a large factory for casting like the larger companies. in those cases, the dolls are cast at the factory, and then shipped back to the artist for approval before shipping, thus allowing more time for the resin to air out. i am so very happy that this has a happy ending, as i think they have wonderful sculpts.... unique and full of personality and emotion. my Nano is just darling and i love her to bits. i want to thank Shinydoll for making such wonderful dolls, and also a shout out to J-Pop who responded to me immediately about my concerns, and explaining the situation so clearly, putting my worries to rest.
Wow . . . what a weird and unpleasant phenomenon! No, I can't say that I noticed any unusually strong smell when I opened any of the three Shinydolls I've bought (two directly from Shin-san last year, one via JPop just this fall).
ooops, just sent you a PM. hmmm this is very weird, it's just horrible. it was sent in a plastic box with packing peanuts, and i'm wondering if the peanuts are the stinkers. i've thrown them out, so i guess i will wait a bit and see if it gets better.
All resin has a smell to it, can't speak about shinydoll but some of my dolls from all sorts of various companies have had the smell of the resin make me take a few paces back. Not everyone can smell it, depends how strong your nose is I guess.
Hmm, I've bought a brand new Akali, brand new Kiki and display model Thaasa I body direct from Shinydoll and none of them had this problem. I'm guessing it's without face up?
I seem to recall my Shinydoll body having a very strong resin smell when I received it, but this wasn't too much of a surprise as he had cast one of the pieces I received only two days before.
thanks guys, i have her tucked away for the moment, with the head cap slipped aside, the worst fumes seem to come from inside the head. it actually smells like airplane glue, really pungent. i do think the worst of it is subsiding a bit, it was just so shocking upon opening the box.
Hello, Miss Ally-san, May I write some here? I beleave your head is the one, which was casted and packed on the same day, and shipped directly to you. I can easily imagine the smell you experienced just after opening the box. Any uretan resin made BJD should once have had the smell when casted. It decreases after weeks.
DOI SHIN, thank you, i think it is getting better. it is the Nano head and i love it so very much. i hope to give a face up tomorrow, and then i will post photo!

That's what you call a doll made especially for you!!! Can't wait to see her, I love Shinydoll sculpts
Miss Ally-san, Hello, again. I am so happy as you are happy now. Body parts and major heads of ShinyDOLL are casted by casting factory. It's R.C.Berg, the best casting company in Japan. But, as NANO has retired from the regular line up of ShinyDOLL, there was not stock of NANO. So your head was casted by ShinyDOLL itself. If new casting was ordered to the casting factory, it might need four weeks and the number should be around thirty. The factory and ShinyDOLL are using completely the same material.
oh i see, you made my doll especially for me! awesome! i hope i didn't misrepresent your doll making process, that is how i interpreted the response i got from J-Pop, a wonderful company.i just wanted to make sure that nobody would ever have any concern about purchasing a Shinydoll. i think everyone should have one or two ,or more! thank you so much for your response!
for anyone who is still curious about my "little stinker" here is a link to gallery post of her finished, she's a darling: http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=263362
Some people cannot smell it, some can. It depends on when it was cast as well one guesses. I got one doll of mine and to me he had a faint smell but to the person who had him first (group order) she couldn't smell it at all.
