Do you have a theme to your collection? I think I listed some of the more popular aesthetics. At least from what I've noticed here and on insta. I've seen some beautiful cohesive collections! Just noesy to see what's popular My collection is pretty much half fantasy, half modern day.
In terms of numbers, I have mostly fantasy dolls. But I like a diversity of styles, as I don't have a set cast of OCs that have to all match... and often I will change the look of a doll into different styles, or get a doll purely because I like the sculpt or fullset.
I love Fantasy books, movies, short stories etc. However, fantasy type dolls NEVER last at my house, but surprisingly Fairy Tale type dolls do (think Disney princess, animal type dolls). I enjoy seeing what people do with the Sci-fi type dolls but know that is not something that would last around here either. I mostly end up in the Regency period for how I like my dolls looking, but then have the occasional Gothic doll, casual child-like doll looks. My collection is not cohesive at all.
I voted for color, because everyone in my collection has a color theme. But I think the most cohesive thing about my collection is that everyone is smiling With only one exception, but I imagine her being the type of girl who says "this is my happy face "
My collection is a lot of fantasy ideas in modern settings and styles. I have witches and demons but I don’t tend to do like high fantasy Tolkien esque outfits or designs for them - those designs just don’t speak to me. Stylistically every doll has their own modern fashion style (i.e. Lolita, street wear, pastel goth, business casual). And all my dolls belong to the same world and time period so they have that theme connecting them and helping them look a bit more cohesive
Two-thirds of my collection are fantasy dolls, as are the several I have on pre-order. I have elves, fairies, a doll with bird wings, a Dollzone Wendy with the sea-creature human head on a human body, a demon, and others. There are also human dolls who are mages or have special powers. I tend to dress them in a mix of modern and vintage styles, with the occasional fantasy outfit. I'd like to make more fantasy clothes for many of my dolls to better suit their characters.
I have both human and fantasy dolls but I dress them all in either modern or gothic styles. That's just what I like best.
Mine are mostly dressed modern casual. My dolls are all children and I dream of something like Neverland, where they are all in a fantasy wilderness style or animal costumes but modern styles are more accessible to me since I don’t sew. I love colorful outfits but have a few in neutrals or sad beige, lol!
My dolls are all in a single family/storyline, so I love dressing them all in the same fashion. They wear Japanese kimono most of the time - I enjoy the look of East Asian traditional clothing, and I have a real thing for BJDs in kimono and hakama. (But I'm not as interested in Chinese hanfu or Korean hanbok, for some reason...) I do give them modern clothing every so often, just for a change of fashion. I have an ambition of eventually putting them all into cyberpunk/futuristic sci-fi outfits, but that's dependent on me getting better at sewing, and finding the right clothes to buy/preorder. So it's an ambition right now and not going to happen for a while!
I had to pick four options. Vintage, Modern, Goth/punk/emo/dark and Color! Here's how my current crew breaks down more specifically: -Jussi, Cooper, Aapo, Jarppi, Opaline, Harriet, Ezra, Wilhelm: goth/metal/rock/emo/dark -Pepper: Modern/punk skater -Bren: Depends on the day. Sweats and tank on lazy days, skater for his career, goth/rock for dressing up -Jouko, Nate, Adam, Charlie, Jamie, Cassie: modern casual -Bambi & Monroe: vintage 80s style! Bambi is Barbie themed, Monroe is glam rock inspired -Lumi: boho artist with a million layers of clothes and jewelry -Trystan: vintage/hipster -Taylor: Modern/vintage grunge
I only have two dolls and both are based on pre-existing characters so they'll mainly adopt the styles of their respective worlds, one being fantasy and the other having a modern fashion style. But! I may mix styles between them as I begin to sew more things I do want to make some fancy kimono and Chinese style clothes for them at some point just because I enjoy those
My crew are solidly in the "a little of everything" crowd, though my standard default style for them tends towards sort of a quasi-historical/mildly-fantasy Asian look.
All of the BJD that I have based on OCs are vampires, so I dress them in all black all the time. The rest are fan art, based mostly on Japanese video games or anime, which also tend to be from darker themed licenses, so I guess dark would be the default -- I myself dress in all black all the time since I could barely form a sentence, because I am a huge creepy-old-weirdo and I want my dolls to have a similar air (of creepy, not of ancient old fart!). DX
I tried families, themes and just one company and it never lasted. Now I just collect what I love as selling is harder and harder to do.
I have a mix of styles. My main collection are 1/4-sized, all humans with contemporary clothes, but they each have their own style based on character. So they are cohesive in the sense that they are all the same scale and looks like they belong to the same world when they are all posed together. But I have historical and fantasy outfits for some of them as well. My tinies are mostly just mannequins, they don't have a fixed style. I just put them in whatever makes sense at the time. And here are a few fantasy creature dolls in my collection as well.
All mine are contemporary humans - I don't really shell characters so there is not a great amount of nuance to it haha. They all dress somewhat fancier than jeans and sneakers (oh to be a doll with no discomfort!) - I love sewing a lot so I like dressing them in what I'd find too much of a bother to wear or make for myself *stares at the pile of organza in the corner*.
My resin and vinyl dolls mostly wear everyday modern dress. I joke that my dolls are always the most boring ones at a meetup. XD A few of my characters are Japanese, they will sometimes wear yukata or similar. I have a few elves too, though they are not high elves and rarely wear anything fancy. I have one girl who loves Lolita wear and super cute outfits. My rock band members sometimes wear clothes a little out of the ordinary for performance. Plus anyone can be pressed to wear cosplay or fancy outfits for meetups or conventions (some under protest). Linda S. galatia9
I voted for Modern day fashions and Color, but... Bri-Bri loves frilly and fancy dresses and her brother Ollie every so often conforms to her fashion rules. Aiden wants to be an actor and wears all types of costumes, as long as they enhance his beauty. Plus, I always have an excuse for dressing up my dolls for Carnival, Halloween or costume parties.
I’ve been in this hobby since 2006 and have amassed a good sized collection over the years, and all of them are fantasy OCs except for one (a current-day Asian female wrestler, but even she’s in lavender skin and only wears stage-inspired ring gear, so there you go!) I’m talking “fantasy” in a Tim Burton’s “Alice” (in Wonderland) sort of way, where anything and everything can co-exist in time…including different styles. In fact, the reason I got into this hobby in the first place was to explore my life-long fascination with fashion. I love sewing and pattern-making, and I wanted to fully indulge my creativity by making original characters who would wear the many styles that interested me. And, in truth, it’s been a wonderful journey! I’ve explored not only traditional fantasy, but many vintage and historical styles, as well as all those fascinating styles coming out of fashion districts like London’s Carnaby Street in the 60s/70s or Japan’s Harajuku area in the first decade of this century. If it interested me, I’d create a character who would wear it, which is how I wound up with such a large collection.
I only buy fantasy sculpts, and I’m not really interested in modern fashion, so the overall look is pretty standard fantasy. I’m happy with that, it’s been an aesthetic I’ve liked since I was a kid. Been considering buying some more modern alternate outfits though, just for variety.
I have several groups, not one overarching theme. There are my SD OC fantasy dolls, primarily humans and elves. There are my MSD Bobobie fairy dolls. I have four large girls who are my Mori girl crew and my vampire and his college age descendant and her friends. Then I have a few that don't fit anywhere in particular. So some modern stuff, some fantasy stuff with historical influences and some downright fantasy fairy things.
My dolls usually end up modern, and usually in styles that I would normally wear. I'm really trying to branch out lately, tho. My latest doll was styled as historical Korean, which was so much fun. I am planning to refashion one of my older dolls in a steampunk style. And for my future dolls, rather than my boring modern style, I want to go with a more rustic cottagecore kind of modern style.
My collection is just starting out (2 dolls in!) and so far, I don't have much of a theme going on. My first doll is wearing modern clothes and my second is wearing vintage style, though she's a project doll that I know will go through a lot of changes over the next few months. I think I prefer my individual dolls having their own themes to my whole collection having a theme. Variety is nice!
Most of mine are characters from books, so they're a mix of fantasy with some historical influences. And i want to make my dnd characters, which i guess would probably fall under fantasy
I have an elven army. I do have a few dolls that aren't elves and they are either from my favorite video game or my favorite anime or are humans living in the realms of the fae haha!
My resin family is divided in two worlds so to speak. Half of them (3 dolls) are anthros with a fantasy story line with magic portals and gods and everything. The other half are one Doctor Strange and 2 OCs (a vampire and a normal human little girl), so they kinda mix modern day fashion with fantasy.
My dolls are from 2 different futuristic settings. They are all human except for one, who is an alien with lavender skin. They mostly wear modern day fashion that passes as futuristic with the right props and accessories, though.
Yes! To all the things. My crew is a mish-mashed conglomeration of every choice on the list; and they're all a part of the same story. It doesn't make sense, I know... but it does, and shouldn't at the same time... It has to do with where they live in the story, and "where" that weird little rift in the basement of the therapy building actually goes to...
I'm ashamed to say It doesn't follow a theme I have bought in the past with the intention of having a variety of sculpts now that I try to minimize I will keep my favorite faces and that's all , what they wear depends mainly on what I fancy at the time to sew or knit I have no plan or method whatsoever
For my 1/3 scale dolls, they are mostly styled with contemporary fashions, but with a couple of the characters, I incorporate more of an anime, manga aesthetic. Oh, and sometimes, they also dress in cosplay or costume.
I chose fantasy, but I'll probably have to revise it. My crew is hard xD I have the poor college student who lives abroad, I am trying to give him more of a grungy/comfy clothing style but I'm struggling with finding clothing options that work in his size (he's a very thicc 72cm boy). I have a weasel anthro who has some ancient Asian outfits, but steals clothes from the college student (and at least story-wise loves lolita fashion. I need to find a lolita dress that'll fit him. Somehow). And a half-eagle man who is....ancient Egyptian with a modern twist? I can't find any pre-made clothes that work for him, so I've been making them by hand. My last doll is a cat-tuar and I just want to buy all the cute little modern dresses for her. So I'm gonna change my ticky to modern. Yeah. Lol
I prefer modern day fashion for my dolls. I dress my dolls in clothing I find amazing but wouldn't necessarily look amazing on me. For example I think frilly, cute outfits are beautiful but I don't think they're look good on me or I'd feel comfortable in them so instead I dress my dolls in outfits like that. Sometimes I do buy lolita-like clothing or traditional clothing of different cultures like a hanfu or miko clothing for variety.
Mine are all modern day fashion that are either gothic or punk or very colorful like kawaii Japanese street fashion, I have fantasy dolls like my Link and Zelda dolls who are elves but I dress them in modern day clothes, I have no interest in fantasy clothes but I appreciate them in other people's dolls.
I'm a fashion history nerd, and collecting BJDs means I have many models to dress. Most of my dolls wear old or modern, depending on my mood
Mine are definitely fantasy. What can I say, I have fun with fantasy in art, writing, and dolls. My tinies are nearly all fairies and trolls and things. The middies are humans, and a couple fauns and an incoming mermaid. The big dolls are mostly humans, one half elf, one monster, and two Sidhe type fae/fairies. (Also, I can't sew modern clothes very well! Renaissance gowns yes, suit coats, nope!)
My collection is a merry bunch of whatever. I guess the common reappearing theme is variety! I also have a lot of animals or fantasy creatures. I buy a doll if a) I like the sculpting (overall or just details) or b) it has interesting joints and posing abilities. Emphasis on “or” as I find combinations of both are rare and costly. For clothing I prefer modern day ‘normal’ to cute clothes, often with cats, rabbits, horses or fan themes ( like Harry Potter or Star Wars).
I have a mixture of elves and humans in a mostly fantasy setting. Only a few of mine are in the modern day era. I also have a few Dragon Age themed dolls.
My collection is a mix but they do tend to fall into the Fantasy and Sci-Fi categories mainly. I also voted ‘Other’ as those that don’t haven’t really got any particular style other than what happens to suit them. *shrug*
Fantasy, I settled into world-building with my second doll and now it colors every purchase decision I make-how do they fit in, getting members of his family, etc. I still do have modern day clothing, because it's fun to dress them up like that, especially for sillier photoshoots, but my main focus is building up my fantasy setting.
My dolls live in a modern setting so modern fashion it is. I don't really see punk or goth as not being modern fashion, since modern people wear it. There's certainly a range of modern styles in my crew as I really like them to each show a different "personality" from one another. I do try to keep them all fashionable for their given style. Some are pretty normcore, some are more whimsical, some are glam, some are very haute, some are more goth/punk. I'm almost done making an outfit that's more drag/vamp/showgirl.
Punk. My girls are all loud, opinionated, bossy punks. I have no idea where they get it from. I have some frilly stuff, but it always ends up getting shoved back into storage in favor of jeans, leather, and studs.
I try to have different style for each of my dolls, or at least swap it, but the themes I like or *would* like to do are the following: -office drama-vibes (heels, pencil skirts, boys in suits and lacquered shoes) -rococo/dark rococo -victorian and/or victorian goth -edwardian -pastel rainbow -mori, fur collars, flower patterns, autumn.
My collection has technically two themes: OCs/existing characters, and/or elf ears. To be serious though—Most of my OC-based crew arise from a storyline set in a world that's semi steampunk, slightly Eastern influenced (well, more-so inspired by a fic that's a slight AU take on Legend of Korra), with possibly some fantasy/historically inspired elements thrown in for extra effect. There's also, of course, the ones that are based on Legend of Korra characters, an MSD boy who veers closer to Hawaiian/beach-themed, and a Minifee Mika/Mir drawn from a completely different universe from the others. Maybe a better word to describe my crew would be—eclectic
My dolls' clothing themes are all over the place, so I picked color haha. I would say all of my dolls have some kind of fun color featured in their design, whether it's subtle like my Black Jack's deep blue eyes, or loud like my Minami's purple skin tone and electric blue hair. Bright colors bring me a lot of joy, so I like to incorporate something fun into each doll's look even when they're a more serious character.
Fantasy and gothic for me over here! Most of my dolls are dressed either fantasy or in relatively casual clothes at the moment, but there’s some very gothy vibes with a lot of them. Unsurprising, given that part of my crew are vampires, and another 3 are necromancers, so skulls and the like are pretty topical.
All of my dolls are human sculpts, and the two themes I follow are historical and modern day! :] I didn't want to limit myself to one, and the modern clothing ranges from streetwear to formal/elegant and lolita fashion.
Mostly fantasy sculpts here! Even the ones that aren't fantasy sculpts are straight up based on characters that are fantasy creatures.
All but 2 of my dolls are VOLKS F-01 (and the two that aren't were both very recently acquired and similarly large head/eye sculpts) so that's the theme here Nadeko is a lolita and all the SD-sized girls here end up borrowing clothes from her at some point but they all have their own different styles so I wouldn't consider that a cohesive theme as much as it is out of convenience.
I clicked on several but really should have clicked on Someting Else as, while the ones i clicked on are present the main theme is children. Very few of my dolls are adults , a few more are older teens , the majority however are children and a few younger teens. The biggest group are a large family of, mostly SD sized, Victorian children from one extended family of siblings, half siblings , and cousins. I also have a few dolls from other historical periods, and the rest are mainly outfitted in vintage/old-fashion/classic childrens styles. There are very few who dress modern, although I've added more of those recently - but they're "middle-of-the-road" modern (generic jeans and T-shirts) rather than any specific modern or current-fashion style modern. Teddy
My doll preference changed over the years and I settled in making an Edwardian/Victorian doll family with a bit of whimsy. Think about the girls who made Cottingley Fairies. I only have Celastrina for now, still in a box though. Still a project
