Wearables A Medieval-Fantasy Journey

Mar 20, 2023

    1. Hello, and welcome to my project journal! (and first forum post in a very long time :sweat )

I've been saying for yeeaars that I want to sew most of my dolls' clothes, and yet end up buying most of them anyway. :doh They did/do have a more modern aesthetic to them, but I decided recently that I want to style most or all of them in a more medieval/fantasy-inspired style. And I thought if I started a project journal here, hopefully that will give me the outward motivation needed to actually keep at it :sweat

I had vague character concepts for most of them, but those will probably need to be reworked to fit the medieval fantasy theme. Necessary accessories will be added to the list as I figure out what each character needs. Names may change in the process too. I'm also not yet sure if my three Yo-SD dolls will fit into the story, or if they'll get their own story/theme.

Faceups will stay as-is, since I can't do them myself and I can't currently afford to commission them. I have a bunch of wigs to play around with if I decide to do so, though I may end up picking up a few more... we'll see, lol. For now, my main focus will be clothing, footwear, and accessories. (Again, some footwear will be purchased, but I do want to try making some as well.)

This will be a work-in-progress for a long time, lol. For now, my main goal is to check at least one item off the list per month. A stretch goal would be five items per month... fingers crossed. :XD:

The crew and what they need:

Shia (BlueBloodDoll Waltz): undertunic, overtunic, trousers, boots, cloak, crown, sword, shield?

Terje (Luts Bory): undertunic, overtunic, trousers, boots, cloak

Key (Migidoll Ryu): undertunic, overtunic, trousers, boots, cloak

Mikhail (Dollmore Kara Klum): undertunic, overtunic, trousers, boots, cloak

Brodie (Dollzone Megi/Doll Chateau hybrid): undertunic, overtunic, trousers, boots, cloak

Anden (Doll Chateau Lance): undertunic, overtunic, trousers, boots, cloak

Lance (Dream of Doll Ducan): undertunic, overtunic, trousers, boots, cloak

Lucius (Dollzone Nighthawk): undecided (he has the Nighthawk fullset and I may leave it at that)

Lawrence (Ringdoll S): tunic, kilt, boots

      Sigye (Dollzone Yo-Carter): undecided

      Chinook (Mystic Kids Chris): undecided

      Jesper (Soom Lami): undecided

      Thanks for reading!

    2. Off to a good start, as I actually finished Anden's undertunic last week. When I found the fabric in my stash I assumed it was a broadcloth, but as I worked with it I realised it's probably quilting cotton, lol! The ribbon is just a cheap one from Amazon, so it doesn't lay as nicely as I'd like, but since the tunic will usually be under at least one other layer I'm not too worried about it.

The design of the tunic is based on a variety of medieval tunic images and patterns I've found online, combined with a keyhole neckline facing tutorial I found on Tumblr (which works great in 1:1 scale, but not so well in smaller scales for some reason). Anden's overtunic will be made using the same pattern, but a bit longer and with either shorter sleeves or no sleeves.

All in all, I'm really happy with how it turned out. I want to smile every time I look at him now :D

    3. The undertunic looks lovely! I'm looking forward to seeing your updates here, I've got a similar goal for this year to sew clothes for my 3 MSDs. Good luck on all your projects!

    4. 2020 was handy for giving me time for a similar project. There are lots of great clothing history & theatre costuming sources to refer to while gathering ideas. They certainly helped me turn vague ideas into solid plans.
Nice job on the tunic. Enjoy the rest of the project!

    5. Thanks! And good luck to you on yours too.

Thanks! Yeah, it was partly realising how many resources there are out there that gave me the motivation to finally get started. I'm so excited to keep going.

    6. The undertunic looks great so far! I've been procrastinating making some medieval/fantasy clothes for my own dolls, so this motivated me a bit!

    7. Thanks :) I've been procrastinating too, hahah, but I do have a pair of trousers in the works.

    8. Ooh nice work! I'm a fool for this style myself!

    9. The shirt is so cute! Please post more, I hope you havent given them up❤️
