I already posted this photo in my project journal thread for this doll, but I posted the pattern for the jacket I created on my website's slowly-growing pattern archive. Here is the jacket: His is obviously fantasy-oriented, but it'd be easy to adapt to faux leather for biker styles, too. Here's the PDF, which should be printed at 300 DPI: http://serindemyuu.ithilear.com/patterns/Runes_jacket.pdf It's sized to fit an 8.5x11 piece of paper (Standard US computer paper) so do not scale to fit margins. There's enough white space around all the pieces that turning off the margins and ignoring any notice about clipping means it should print just fine, but there's a 1-inch scale line on each page, just to be sure. My patterns are free for personal use; please don't use them for creating items for commission or sale without talking to me first. And here's video instructions for assembly: Happy sewing!
Technically it's not really a jacket it's more of a vest but it's cool I had a lot of internal conflict watching the video though because my OCD was screaming OH GOD PRESS THE SEAMS but my brain was saying PIPE DOWN IT'S SUEDE YOU CAN'T PRESS IT!!!! So a hint for those not using suede trying this : Press your seams right after you sew them that way it sit's flatter and nicer on a complete garment
Hahaha XD Yeah, I ruined a few nice pieces of suede when I was a teenager and didn't know these things. I typically weight-press suede stuff after it's done, though, pinning the edges so they're nice and flat and then sandwiching the doll clothing between heavy books. Couple days later and it's as good as using an iron, most of the time!
You can press suede, but you have to use a press cloth to diminish & disperse the heat. You lightly tap it, making sure NOT to put full force iron on it.
That must be where I went wrong before. When I started sewing my only ironing experience was my husband's stubborn military uniforms, so I was pretty heavy-handed with the iron and messed stuff up even with a press cloth. Thanks for your input! I'll try that next time.
Lol believe me those uniforms are made to last. Because suede has a "nap" to it, ( that's when you run you hand over it & it seems to change color) make sure to "iron" it in the one direction as well.
Are you guys referring to the fabric microsuede? I was confused for a second there thinking you meant suede, like the actual stuff! If this is true about the fabric though, this will be very useful! I have some of it and it can be tricky to handle. I am learning as I go.
This is so awesome! I plan on getting a boy soon, and this would look really cool with his super serious face. I really want to pair it up with some shoulder armor (pauldron? I think their are a few names for it depending on the country/era it's from...) Thank you so much for sharing!
