A Family Affair: Do your loved ones love dolls too?

Aug 6, 2009

    1. Sorry if this post exists.

Are you lucky enough to have a boyfriend/girlfriend, husband/wife, or kids that also adore participating in the BJD hobby? Do they have their own dolls too?

    2. Mum has one ^.^

A CP DES hybrid that we're working on (rescue projeckt)

      =]

And my crew sits on our shared computer desk, hehe I'll find them posed or re-arranged sometimes and I'm like 0.o and then mum will be all like, they looked sad. And I'm like phew. No ghosties playing with my crew.

But one of my (in the near future) girls will be a ghost, which was created around a dream I had so hehe it'll be fun.

    3. I seem to be the only one of my kind in my extended family. My two sisters like dolls, but not abj dolls. Hubby loves bikes and couldn't care less.

    4. My brother couldnt hate them more, while my little sister is in love with them, seeing as all little girls have an extreme obsession with dolls haha (:

    5. I think I'm the only one in my family that likes BJD's. However, my Mom does enjoy making clothes. xD

    6. im the only one in my family that has/likes bjds, my mum and dad are interested in the things i make and what dolls i currently own and my sis collects other toys such as vinyl and pullips. the boyfriend....hes not so fussed but does know their names!

    7. I am lucky enough to have a husband who enjoys looking at BJDs with me. I'm still saving for my first one, but he is excited to see how I plan to customize her once she's home. :aheartbea He even mentioned in passing he might be interested in owning a male BJD some day.

It doesn't surprise me that he feels that way, though. I have collected teddy bears all my life - and for the 7+ years we've been together, he's always supported my collection.

    8. So far I'm the only one in my family, but my mother does enjoy their beauty. I don't think she can get over the price shock. I guess I can't blame here, really! XD

    9. Peppermint Pocky- Awww, that sounds so cute! Its cool to hear your husband supports your hobbies ~~ And good luck getting your first one!

    10. Nope, they think I'm nuts! Lol. Either that or just being the childlike eccentric that I am.
I did get my cousin totally addicted though, so I guess that counts. :)

    11. well i'm the only one in my family that really love them and i don't even have one yet just his wig :(

    12. My husband got into them too. His first boy arrived the same day as my second doll. It's been over a year now and he's still just as into it as I am. It's really fun sharing the hobby with him. My kids are too young to be into them. My youngest does love the dollies, but I make him love them from afar. He has his own little dolls and figurines that he likes to get out and take pictures of. My oldest is interested in getting a dollzone rabbit, but I think it's just because it reminds him of a character from a story he likes. Maybe when they are older they will want to get into them more.

    13. I think I'm the first one to own (going to own) a bjd in my family o.o

My boyfriend bought my Zeppelin Brownie for me.
But when I told him I was going to get a Luts Cherry Boy, he got mad.
He says it's not the doll he dislikes, it's the amount of money I'm spending on "just a doll" :/
I wish he was into them a bit more and all. He's really indifferent about it. :(

      Lucky PeppermintPocky xD
Hope you love your first bjd.
It'd be extremely adorable if your hubby did get his own male. :D

Haha, I think for me I'd be getting the boy and my bf would get the girl.
      If only :P

    14. Why thank you! :)

Thanks Spiteless ~ and yes, I'm a lucky girl. I know I'll love my BJD to bits. I'd love it if eventually he got one, too. We're both very artsy people - I have a feeling once he sees one in person and just how much you can customize them he may break. That's what happened to me.

      Hey... I can dream. :XD:

    15. Your Welcome PeppermintPocky <3

Haha, I can only hope
      Oh spreading the BJD joy~

    16. Tch. I wish my family could get into them. Most of my family are very superficial people though, and none of them artistic. They just can't even fathom why I would spend that much money on a doll, even though my aunts spend hundreds of dollars on purses and shoes. *sigh* Some people are such hypocrites...
Some of you are lucky to have family members that accept your hobbies :)

    17. Nobody in my family cares.
My brothers will listen intently to whatever I want to talk about, but he calls the sliding joints in my dolls "fat rolls" to bug me.
My fiance thinks they're a stupid hobby.

    18. I'm really lucky... my boyfriend collects movie memorabilia so he's really understanding. He even went in half and half with me for my first doll as a birthday gift! :D

My mom thinks they're pretty... but not for the price. hehe

My dad just thinks I'm insane... I never had any interests in dolls till my twentys. :p

None of my friends have even heard or seen anything like these dolls... I'm hoping to convert them! XD I've almost got one convinced!

    19. most of my friends adore them. only one of my sisters can stand looking at them while the rest of my family are scared of them. my boyfriend doesnt think they are "too" creepy but he only likes Bella for some odd reason <_<

    20. Surprisingly, both of my parents actually like Kal, my mum keeps saying how handsome he is and caution me not to drop him whenever I carry him around, while my dad kept giving me fashion tips on what clothes looks best on him, lol.

My brother is the only one who seemed pretty neutral about Kal, once in a while he would give my doll his 'I-am-creep-out-by-you look' ^^''

    21. My boyfriend loves my dolls. He's always buying things for my tinies and is thrilled that I'm back into my larger girl.

My dad thinks it's weird, but my mother adores them. She thinks they're so lovely! ^_^

    22. None of my family has any dolls. I'm the only one. And I don't have any sort of significant other.. So that's out of the question. Lol. I think the only person in mah family that would get a doll might be my sister.. But that would be if I bought it for her. Lol. She is still caught up by the price. Not to mention she has other things to worry about then wasting money on a doll. My mum and other sister think it's a waste of money to get these dolls. So I highly doubt that they would get any. And mah dad doesn't even know I have one. Lol.
I guess the closet thing to a family member having a doll would be one of mah best friends. She is gonna start saving her a doll soon! Which is awesome, 'cause I'll have someone to talk all doll talk with now! 8D

    23. My husband doesn't pay my dolls a great deal of attention, but then I don't expect him to (after all, I'm pretty indifferent to his extensive Jazz collection). He's never really shown a serious interest in getting a doll for himself, although I think he did toy with the idea when I told him about DIM Minimees (he started thinking about what film characters he could have). He's supportive of my involvement in the hobby however, and is pleased when I get the dolls out to 'play' with them. I believe this somehow justifies the cost in his mind! He also has a favourite doll - my Minisup Yan, who was my wedding present from him (which is probably why she's his fave, but he says it's just because she's very cute :))

    24. My husband has a Luts Honey Delf Taffy, though he doesn't "play" with his dolls the way I do. He keeps her by his computer and occasionally changes her pose to something funny. And when we went to Denverdoll with some friends, he was excited to get her some new eyes.

It is a little difficult though because he usually insists when I'm wavering on whether or not to keep a doll that I have to keep it, whereas I think more practically in situations like that--if a doll isn't working out, I'd prefer to try and sell it. I'm not sure whether he holds to that to try and keep me from making impulse purchases, or because he does get sentimental about my dolls too.

      I have four brothers, but the youngest might be into bjd someday--he's really into webkinz and that sort of thing, but even when he was younger and I let him hold my AG doll or Souldoll Yewon, he was very careful and respectful with them. My grandmother actually collects all kinds of dolls and art, and I was finally able to show her my bjd in person this summer, and she was definitely impressed by the artistry. And my parents, especially my mom, are not really the doll-collecting type, and they definitely do not like the price tag... ^^;

    25. My mom and one sister collects antique dolls. They like my bjd's but I haven't converted them yet.
My husband is supportive of my doll habit, he understands since he has his own expensive collection of little gas powered cars.
I have an antique doll that sits on his computer desk. One day I was changing her clothes and he wanted to know where she was. I teased him about it and he just said he got use to her standing there..LOL so in my mind thats his doll now.
When he gets extra money he gives it to me to buy dolls or doll related items. He actually talked me into my first BJD, I wasn't sure cause of the price. LOL I think he thought I would be happy with only one. I have now 3 dolls and 2 floating heads.

    26. My husband is okay with it - the rest of my family thinks the BJDs are a little odd, though.

    27. My mom and I got into BJDs together. So one of "my" Soonys is actually more hers. But in truth, we share all the dolls and all their stuff, and it's really fun! My dad thinks they are kind of neat too - sometimes he talks for them and stuff, it's really funny.

    28. Yup my mom and sister:)

    29. Not really, but my half also love it~~

    30. The person I am most attached to is also into the doll hobby - and we have the same mold, too! :)

The only one my mom likes that I have, though, is my school A. She makes him jewelry. :XD:

    31. My mom is very supportive and we enjoy sewing clothes for my boy together. My dad is not unsupportive, but not supportive either. And I have one friend who is into the hobby herself, and saving for her first doll. :)

    32. My mother and stepdad think he's pretty, but don't seem to care too much. He creeps my sister out. But my grandmother and cousin Brittany on my father's side both absolutely ADORE him!

    33. they don't love BJDs specifically but my grandmother and mother can just appreciate dolls in general. my mom loves to look at BJDs with me though, someday i'd really like to get her one :)

    34. None of my family members own them except me however

My Dad thinks they are 'kinda funny'

My older sister doesnt like my 60 cm bjds but loves my Cherry Blossom Alice

My Mom thinks they are all very beautiful

and my husband thinks they are neat beacause they can have their eyes and hair changed out. He also thinks the little ones are cute .

    35. One of my sisters really likes them.^^ She's 9, so a bit young for a BJD, but if she keeps up the interest, I should hopefully be done college and have a job and would be able to afford to get her by that time.

She really likes looking at the pictures and she's trying to save up for a Puki, but as mentioned, I think she's a little young for that at this point.

I'm currently dating a guy who really likes how I bring my dolls with me lots of places. Usually if I don't have one with me, he'll ask why they're not there, haha. A few weeks ago, he helped me restring Adelheid.^^

    36. My little cousin loves them, she always comes over to look at my dolls, I don't have a bjd yet, but hse has seen pictures and she I are going to have a little party when my first bjd comes (only one more week). She likes my Pullips though and I've already bought her a few mini pullips. I think when she turns 11 I'll buy her a tiny.

    37. My parents are actually very supportive of my dolls. In fact, I think they really like them, if not soley because I like them. My mom will sometimes tell me what kinds of wigs, eyes, and outfits would look good on them and my dad occasionally asks questions and is always eager to give his opinion when I ask. My brother couldn't care less, although he has told me which one is his favorite and occasionally that he likes their look.

    38. My grandparents who bought me my doll absolutely loves him but wouldn't collect them.

    39. My famliy quite all right with my doll.
I know someone hav problems about BJD with their famliy, I feel sorry for them.

    40. My mom is kind of neutral, not really saying anything about him. She figures if I want to pay the money for him and everything for him, then it's not really her place (they way she is about most things). My dad noticed him for the first time 2 weeks after I got him. I think he was a little creeped out, but he's not one to say anything. I don't talk much to my brother, but I have seen him sneak glances as I traipse around the house with my doll.

Other than those three, only one friend knows about my BJD obsession. My closest friends and I have always been into Barbie dolls, so she could appreciate the fact that... he's a doll, haha. She couldn't really get past the price tag, though. She was also a little rough with him the first time and doesn't really acknowledge that he has a personality. The next time, though, she sewed for him and was gentle so she's really warming up to him. >w<

    41. My family doesn't mind my doll much. My mom likes to amuse herself by putting things in his arms to hold, and she thinks he's pretty, but she doesn't like the price tag. ^^; My dad thinks the way he's put together and everything is interesting but doesn't really pay him much mind. My sister really loves him though, and even wants one of her own someday.

Besides them, my boyfriend has seen my doll and thinks he's creepy. And thus, doesn't really pay him much mind, haha. On the other hand, my sister's boyfriend (who is like a younger brother to me) loves my doll. He even makes little things for him and wants one of his own, hehe.

    42. No one in my family (well my brother and mom) seems to care but they don't mind BJDs either so I guess that's a good thing. As for my dad and his family they probably wouldn't like BJDs but I could care less I just don't need to hear their whinning. You see, my mom and dad, they're big jokers so I know they will crack jokes like crazy yes all in good fun but it will get old....fast. I think she might grow on my mom though. So here's to hoping. =D

    43. Well... My mom loves MY doll! XD
She actually really enjoys dolls herself, but I don't know if she'll ever get one herself. >.> I'd really like for her too, though! And she knows what doll she wants, even. XD

I also think that my step mom would really enjoy BJDs, but I'm not around her and my dad as much, so she doesn't really know anything about them. :/

    44. I seem to be the only one of my kind in my extended family. My two sisters like dolls, but not abj dolls. Hubby loves bikes and couldn't care less

    45. I seem to be the only one of my kind in my extended family. My two sisters like dolls, but not abj dolls. Hubby loves bikes and couldn't care less

    46. My mom liked it but not the price though~ XP
My aunts liked it too but they said that it's too pricey for collecting dolls xP

    47. My mum doesn't care about the price, so long as the bills are paid first. And she likes mine so much she'd admitted to considering taking them with HER when she goes places durring the day when I'm sleeping. XD And she and I don't even like dolls.

    48. XD My family isn't really interested in buying one, I think. The price tag is a bit shocking...
But most of my relatives seem really into my boy when I bring him with, and my mom and dad even have a nickname for him~ XD They call him "Hank" instead of Henry. It's rather cute.

I think my boyfriend is kind of neutral, though. He thinks my hobby is kind of silly, and mistook Henry for a girl. >>; But otherwise he's been OK about it.

    49. As far as BJDs it is just me. My mom collects other dolls, and appreciates the BJDs but probably wouldn't buy one for herself. I'm sure she wouldn't complain if I got her one though! :) My boyfriend supports my hobby, as I do his so it's never really an issue as to price. We both have jobs and once the basics are paid for, it's still your own money to spend.

    50. What a fun topic!
My family is completely fine with the dolls, but none of them own any. My brother collects art figures and has an obitsu dog that he loves to death. He thinks the amount of effort that goes into the dolls is a bit much but fully understands why I love them and is happy to stare at pics with me. He even has me notify him whenever soom releases a new monthly. :XD:

My mother likes my dolls, she even talks to them, weird but funny. She helps me find fabrics and to-scale items for the sewing and is always ready with comments on my latest faceup.

My father thinks we're all strange. He does love that I come chill in his workshop because of them though. He seems to like the modding aspect of the hobby, and helps out whenever possible. He also like the newest addition, Soom MD Cass, since she's reminiscent of Mucca's models.

    51. two of my three daughters were into bjd's before me so we have lots of fun together. my youngest however just shakes her head and my husband just thinks i am nuts.

    52. My family mostly thinks they are creepy and really really don't like the price tag. My mom thinks the main one I want (( Calla )) is kinda pretty but still, doesn't like the price tag at all. Her boy friend hasn't given much of an opinion. My brother thinks they are creepy and scary. My mom's boyfriend's son and daughter think they are creepy to. But that's ok. I like em and thats all that matters.:)

    53. All my family loves dolls! My mother (she is 55 years old) and my brother (he is 29) own dolls with me. We collect money for them together, choose and discuss them together. When I was a teenager, mother learned me to make clothes for them. Now she's going to buy MSD from Iplehouse. ^^ Even our grandmother (she's 87) interesting with dolls and their clothes.

    54. Unfortunatly I'm the only one in the family too love BJDs. My father thinks they look beaufitul and are interesting, but besides that he doesn't care while my lil brother thinks the whole idea is kind of creepy. My boyfriend thinks the idea is fine and they're very artsy, but thinks I'm crazy to try n spend so much money on dolls. But luckily for me I LOVE them! And have a good friend to share my hobby with. :P

    55. My family has sort of learned to accept my dolls. At first my whole family was all "...keep her away from me" to my MSD. My aunt was OK-ish with her. Then I got my Puki, with no warning at all. My mother was mortified, my brother indifferent, and my aunt thought she was cute. Now, my entire family is ok with them (not the price), and will sometimes come home with a little trinket for my dolls. My grandmother and aunt still have heated discussions over whether my MSD or my Puki is better (my Grandma believes my MSD, because she is bigger and cheaper and easier to sew for, and my aunt thinks my Puki is much cuter, easier to pose, and less creepy.) My aunt is really warming up to my Puki though- she's buying her new hands, and is needlepointing a custom box, with compartments for her puki box, clothes, mini furniture, etc. I think I may have a bjd fan in the making, folks! Also, my camp boyfriend thought they were neat (through pictures). Unfortunately, he lives in another province, so that possible bjd fan is going to be difficult!

    56. I'm saving for my first doll, my boyfriend thinks I'm a little nutty I think, but he's always been really supportive of my creative outlets.

My mother is indifferent, I don't think it will sink in for her until after I spend the whole day at her house waiting for it to be delivered. (i live on my own, but all my mail goes to her place)

    57. My mom has talked about getting one, but I'm not sure she's gonna do it ^^
It would be nice if she did.

    58. I think I can safely say that I am the only one interested in ABJDs in my immediate family. Everyone else seems to think they're creepy.. I do have ONE friend that shares my interest. ._.

    59. I haven't gotten my first yet (Christmas at the absolute earliest), but I've tested the waters.

My dad doesn't even understand my love of figures, so he definitely doesn't get my fascination with dolls. My mom, however, admits that she "can see the appeal", and I can imagine her posing mine behind my back whenever I get my first, especially since she's been doing some entertaining things with the still-naked 1/6 doll I'm slowly customizing for her. She's got lots of other things she wants to spend money on before dolls, though. Like that new floor she just had put in. I've also run the idea by my grandmother, who acknowledged they're pretty but is absolutely flummoxed by the price. She did hint that she might help me sew stuff once I do get one though, so maybe once she sees one in person she'll change her tune at least a little.

    60. Most of my family is very understanding about the hobby. After my first doll meet, my mom has set upon getting her own doll. (An Oceanmoon Eun-Ryoung, which she will name Olive.) Infact, she wants to get her own account on here, too. My dad, on the other hand, has disdain for the hobby but understands my passion for them. Although he calls all dolls ugly, he helped fix Valentino when his finger snapped off.

Both of my siblings are infatuated with Valentino. They don't dare touch him unless I'm around, and my sister constantly asks me if she can hold him. Both of them say hello to Valentino when they see him, and I'm trying to teach my brother to use underwear so he can be a big boy like Valentino.

My cousin, suprisingly, thought Valentino was awesome. He liked to pop off his headcap, and said that if it wasn't for the price and the fact that he was a boy, he would get one.

My aunt, an artist, thinks Valentino is beautiful and likes it when he poses with her miniature food. She's thinking about getting a doll too, but seems to be more into Blythes and Pullips.

The rest of my aunts (I have a lot) think he's nice-looking, but of course are set back with the price.

However, my 2 grandparents on my dad's side and the 1 grandma on my mom's side would probably be offended by Valentino. If I showed them my doll, they would probably think he's the work of the devil and would immedietly command me to get rid of him. You can't really talk back when one of your grandmas is a pastor and the others are strictly religious.

      Oof, sorry about the overkill.
