Aesthetics A faceup journey

May 27, 2016

    1. Hi everyone! I decided to take a step and openly post my journey in improving faceups. I want to be able to set up for commissions someday and feel confident in my work. I don't feel ready yet and so that just means I need more practice and time! As well as feedback from you guys!

For starters here is my current two practice heads!

what a mess! The poor one on the right got stuffed in a bag with pencils during a recent move....I had no knowledge of this. :/

      That's better!

most current wip...I..don't care for it so far. Any input before I wipe it and try again?

      Thanks for reading!

    2. It looks pretty good but there is a few things you can fix. To start is the eyelashes. I think if you take a little more time with them with a really REALLY well sharped watercolor pencil you can get them a little better. They don't quite go the right way lashes go and I think they need to be more pointed at the ends. I think the eyebrows could use a little more depth to them. Maybe try adding another layer of MSC and go at it with a white watercolor pencil on top to give it some more shiny hairs. Otherwise I really like how your faceup progress is! The shading on the face is really interesting and gives it a lot of depth. And I can tell you like shading the ears (I know that is one of my favorite parts) I can't wait to see what else you do with them and I hope you don't think my comment is rude or anything.

    3. I actually really appreciate the criticism! Thank you! It wasn't rude at all. :] I'll try your suggestions if I work on it tomorrow.

    4. I really like the style, the scars look really good! :)

I think your blushing looks pretty good, it has a lot of depth, and I'm seeing some different colors, which is also good. :) Sometimes, people might use only one pastel color for contour, which can make the whole faceup look flat.
I would recommend, don't forget to blush under the eyes as well. His upper eyelids look good, but underneath they look a bit washed out as they have no color.

The eyebrow hairs and eyelashes do look like they need a little work, but, I find that they are the hardest thing for most people to get really good at. Even after I've been doing faceups for years, they are still the hardest part for me too. :eusa_sile Just keep practicing, and they will get better and better each time.

Did you use paint on his upper eyelid? It looks a little thick, which won't happen with just more pastel - so I'd recommend trying to just layer more pastel to get the color you're looking for (if you did use paint there).

But generally, it looks very promising! :) Keep at it, I'm sure you'll find you get better each time! :thumbup

    5. You're doing a good job so far! Since everyone else has already given you some good suggestions, I'll just point out something else I noticed.
The blushing on the face looks a little uneven in some areas (if this was done on purpose, please disregard!). I had the same problem when I started doing faceups. The pastels would go all over the place, even if I tried blowing on those areas.
Using a big, clean brush to wipe away the extra pastel particles on the face helps a lot! It will even out the skin tones on the face. You can also use q-tips to wipe the more stubborn areas (like ears) and even blend the pastels a little.
Overall, you're doing great. Keep at it! :abambi:

    6. I love the spindly bits on the eyebrows! The part that stuck out to me is the harsh, dark line of the eyelids. Maybe blending them out with a bit of pastel would help. Same with the lips maybe (and watch the symmetry!) Otherwise, I think you did a great job!

    7. Thank you kindly, everyone. <3 I will take the advice to heart.
