20–39cm Dolls A Dolpa in my house! (Volks Kakeru box opening)

The week between Christmas and New Years was Extremely Rough for me at work and I needed something to look forward to if I was gonna make it through the week. So I got myself a secondhand little lad, a cute Kakeru from Dolpa 23! It's wild to me that that was so long ago (2010), good lord. It was already dark by the time I got home to open him, sorry for the kinda crummy lighting.

Nothing more classic than a FRAGILE sticker on the box with a big honkin hole in the middle.... fortunately it wasn't deep, lol.

Not to be all "back in the day" again, but wow, I had totally forgotten about these side-cutout boxes. I remember when this was the sign of a SUPER fancy Volks doll, a cardboard status symbol from the olden times

I picked him up and turned him over to start taking off his bubble wrap, and I heard this little "tink!" noise and watched in shock as his headplate fell off... lad, please, I know it's cold but it's not THAT cold... ah well, I can reattach it. Upon closer inspection it was clear that it wasn't really held on with a whole lot of glue, I guess to keep the edges nice on such a small plate, but I guess that's what a decade of sitting around will do, lol.

Unrolled and happy to be here!!! He's so cute!!!! And his arm wrap got snagged on the roll as I pulled him out, so when I set him down he kinda had this "okay, I'm ready, start with this one!" type of pose. Gosh he's so cute, I adore it.

Space helmet squad!! It did a great job of keeping his faceup nice and protected though, not an ounce of squishing on his eyelashes.

I'm convinced he lived in his box this whole time, because I swear he's the same color as Volks dolls I saw and owned from the early 2010s. And his faceup is still IMMACULATE, I'm so impressed. Normally when I get an older doll they need some TLC, but this guy has been well...preserved, I guess?

Ready to go! Except for shoes, he got stuck in customs for a while because of the shipping backlog, so I figured his shoes would beat him here. He'll just have to show off his toebeans for a while.

At first I thought these little bauble necklaces were kinda goofy with how large they were in person, but then I noticed they fit pretty much perfectly in his hand! I'll allow it, lol

It was pretty cold the night he came in, so I put a lil sweater on him! Still not as good as having actual shoes, but better than nothing lol.

Thanks for taking a look! And sorry about my messy desk, it was a bonkers holiday season and I haven't quite cleaned up all my projects yet. We got yarn, we got fiber, we got half-done stuff, we got a bowl of beads, we got it all!! Phew. Time to relax with this little one, and try to think of a name for him! I was gonna name him Keith, but then he got here and he didn't actually look super Keithly, lol. Any suggestions?

 

Right?? It's so wild! He looks so fresh, his papers say UV protection but I don't read near enough Japanese to know if that's just his faceup sealant or if it's his resin. He's like a little time traveller
