a chubby doll + a cute version

Feb 15, 2014

    1. Hi,

Have been working on this project for quite a while now :)

First, I wanted to make it as one month project in November (suggested by Morgan) but just didn't have time so moved it to December... and now it's February and it's still not finished! I'm so slow :(

It's something I started in July, then dropped and now picked up again, I tried making sketches for it but failed, so it's done without, some sketches would have helped though...

The hands next to the body are just for size purposes, I'm working on the ones floating nearby...

Say something nice, please, as I'm in a bit of a bad mood about this doll... critics are also welcome :P

Also, quite fed up with Blender, will try Zbrush next!

    2. Wow! :D i love that shes different. I've never seen a doll like her before.

    3. I think she is very cool!
There are a lot of discussions about chubbier dolls on different doll forums and there seems to be a great demand. Not many artists attempt it. And even fewer make something that is both somewhat realistic and still esthetically pleasing. I think you might just be on your way to manage to do that. :)

    4. I love her face - I hope you'll keep it just as it is! And again, it's great that you are tackling a very different body shape.
Something bothers me about the proportions though. She looks somewhat squashed, making her head look too big for the body? If I concentrate on the face-on view, in particular, the proportions remind me of a 'dwarf' (don't mean to use that word as a derogatory term)... The rolls of fat around her abdomen also look suspended, whereas they might look more natural if they were allowed to droop/sag more? If you're not using sketches, are you using any photographs or something for reference?

    5. Wow! I think she's super cool! Please continue! I'm so glad you are doing this. I think of our dolls as generally having somewhat stylized proportions, so you might be able to get away with lengthening her legs to balance out her doll-like head. Or stretch out the knee, ankle, wrist and elbow joints just the tiniest bit to add elegance without losing any bulk. But honestly my first reaction on seeing her was, "Yes!!"

    6. I like it a lot, the details are fantastic (I just love the back a lot *O*) I can't wait to see this project finished!!

    7. I adore her! And I agree with aneemal; her face is perfect. Please don't get discouraged! I will love seeing her finished. She is such a different kind of doll. I think she evokes a strong personality. I love the way you've squared her shoulders, because it makes her look so confident and dignified. I don't think she needs to be made elegant. We have enough dolls like that already. What you've given her is something new. She is truly a beautiful girl!

    8. Oh, thank you thank you for your lovely comments!!! <3

aneemal, I like dolls with big heads, so I was trying to do something like Blythe but with a different body shape. I used photos for reference (pintereset is very good for that :P) and so maybe the body is not cartoonish enough and that's why the head looks too large. I'm not sure I'm explaining it properly :P
She might look too squashed now that you say it...

oh, and as for the belly, at first the lower belly was much droopier but then she couldn't sit, the legs hit the belly way too soon :/ so I lifted it up a bit and a bit more... she still can't sit well only with her hip joint and needs to move slightly her body (there are two joints there). I didn't want to make the hip joints larger because it would look horrible, I tried it on paper and the ball was just huge compared to the leg!
Also, I want her to be dressed and I think the rolls don't look so saggy in clothes (that's a bit of an excuse as well :D)

      here's what I've done:
      View attachment 411

Do you see any difference at all? :P
(left: just stretched the whole body, center:original, right: just stretched the arms and legs a little bit)

I didn't like the face at first, but I've made it a long time ago (several weeks that is) and now I'm ok with it, but I'll probably change the shape of the eyes, they look funny to me, or maybe I have to wait a bit longer.

ghostdollie, I think I've read your post wrong and I stretched in between the joints. Do you mean that they should be not so wide?

Hel.lena, the back is my favorite, it was such fun to make! :)

Dry Oak Leaf, thank you for the shoulder comment! :) I cannot wait to have her finished as well and make her some clothes!

    9. I've always wanted to do dolls with different and more realistic body shapes, but I've never been able to figure out how that would leave a decent range of posing motion.. I mean, real flesh will smoosh and move out of the way of an arm's movement, but plastic cannot do that. So it drastically cuts down on the range of motion. I'm very interested to see how you accomplish this. :)

    10. The version on the right looks much better, to me! I know it's only a small difference, but it is a difference!
Yes, I get what you mean about the tummy inhibiting the joints and posing... that's a dilemma. It's true, you wouldn't notice it when she's clothed. Is there actually a joint in the middle of the torso, or is it just a roll of fat?
I'm looking forward to seeing her develop - I think she has a lot of potential to be a great doll. What size would she be?

    11. clarinetplayer, yes! I was thinking the same thing: flesh is so much more practical than hard plastic! That was my problem with the belly, it would get in the way of the legs... as for the arms, I haven't thought much about them. I hope they'll be fine as they are now.

aneemal, Yeah, I'm really glad I followed the advise of stretching her a little bit, I like the one on the right much better as well! The head looks more in proportion with the body and she doesn't have this squashed look anymore :D
There are to joints in the torso: where the fat roll is and under her breasts. As for the size... I don't know yet, she will be probably quite expensive to print! Maybe 19 cm or so, if my budget allows that. :P

Thank you all for your nice comments and suggestions, they really help a lot! <3

    12. Well, I ended up dropping this project, at least for now and instead started making another doll but with a similar idea.
She's supposed to be a cute/kawaii tiny anime figure (you know what I mean, right? ;P) but with a different body shape. If she gets to be printed, she'll 14cm tall. I still have to finish her arms, hands and insides...

      View attachment 465

(oh, think of her as a dressed person)

      Attached Files:

    13. Aw, it's a pity you dropped the original idea. Was coming along so nicely.

The new version is very nice too though... I think the proportions maybe need a little bit of twiddling - head size or head-to-body-ratio or less baby-like facial features, a longer waist or... I'm not really sure what exactly. Cos right now all I can see is a toddler-proportioned body, with curves and boobs. Which is slightly offputting, in spite of the very nice 3d modelling job you've done there. :)

    14. I feel this doll is quite similar with Obitsu baby 11cm, but yours is chubbier and curvier which look kinda cute. But I have to agree with HystericalParoxysm that the breast is a bit odd. But if you feel it works for you, you should just go with this design.

    15. HystericaParoxysm, it is a pity, yes, I spent so many many hours working on that doll and now I don't like her anymore. Maybe I just have to wait until my mind comes back to when I liked it and continue then.

When I was uploading the picture I thought that someone would tell me that she's too squashed and that the head is too large (the same problem as with the other one), so I sort of knew there was a problem but just needed someone else to point it out exactly. Toddler with boobs is certainly off-putting! D:

Chibi! That's the word I couldn't remember, I wanted her to look as a chibi (http://www.google.de/search?q=chibi&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=nf5pU5PDIam9ygPCkoLgAw&ved=0CAYQ_AUoAQ&biw=1220&bih=636) but on a different kind of body. But of course my idea didn't work quite well in reality :P

Maybe I need to change the proportions slightly to a longer body-legs...

This is what I achieved so far (didn't change the arms yet, as I don't have the hands yet)

      View attachment 466

twinage, I didn't know about obitsu body and I've just googled it and I'm not sure, is it supposed to be baby or adult? it's called baby alright but some people seem to customize it as an adult...

Even if the design works for me now I might change my opinion later and agree with both of you, so I prefer to see the mistakes (and hear different opinions) now rather than later. And actually I'm not sure how it looks, so no, it doesn't quite work for me either.

      Thank you for your input!!!

    16. Pretty much the Obitsu is used as chibi, a mini size of Anime character. Obitsu 11cm can be used as an adult too probably because it's quite slim in comparison with yours.
Also, example of Chibi is like Nendroid, they're not BJD but maybe you can use as reference for size and measurement. Even a big-boobs anime character become flat in Nendroid figure.
I don't know if I can recommend something nice about your doll sculpt but actually it's pretty unique and quite refreshing idea, as there is a lot of pear-shaped body but not hourglass shape, not too mention in Yo-SD like yours. Wish you luck and can't wait with the final version :)

    17. Ohhh, I see what you're going for now. Cool cool. :)

I think the difference between the shape you've got going and the chibi shape is... The chibi body styles are like human body proportions of a chubby preteen, with regard to the torso/arms/legs length ratios, and then just with a giant head stuck on top which is sort of comically huge in size. The proportions on the body of yours are much closer to a younger child in torso/arms/legs lengths, with a head size that's a bit oversized, but not terribly so for an actual human child. Lengthening the limbs of the body, especially the torso and lower legs, would give her a more mature body look.

Of course, she's your vision, and don't let my thoughts get in the way of you making what you want to make. Just my two cents. Either way I'm amazed at the speed and loveliness with which you work. :)

    18. The face of your new girl is adorable! And her proportions are looking pretty spot on for a chibi! I remember there used to be a term for it in English too, "super deformed", abbreviated to SD characters.

If I'm not mistaken, I can see your original sketch too? It looks really sweet! I think, maybe if you made her eyes a little larger (like th sketch?) the chibi concept would translate a little better. But as she is now she looks more like a realistic but stylized chubby person. You're getting on well! I also like the fact that her tummy looks pushed up a little, as if she is already wearing clothes xD

    19. Berrysdoll, yes, I remember now, they used to be called SD! XD Wow, that was so long time ago. Thank you, you're right there's the original sketch there in the background and the eyes are large but when sculpting I end up making smaller eyes, I don't know why. I just can't make them fit the face properly, I guess. Her tummy is lifted up a bit for two reasons: for the clothes and also so she can sit, otherwise I can't move her legs enough, the belly stops them.

HystericalParoxysm, yeah, I think I see what you mean... I've tried super sizing her head to make as a chili's head but it looks ridiculous ;P so my doll won't be a proper chibi after all. Also, I lengthened the limbs, but I'm afraid to make them too long and make her look less chubby...
I don't mind other thoughts getting get in my way of making and I actually work very slowly, as you can see now :)

twinage, oh, I didn't know these figures where called Nendroids, they are quite like chibis as well. My previous doll as a very pear shaped doll, so now I'm trying something different XD and the yosd size is to fit my budget, maybe if it goes well with this one I would try to make something similar but on a large scale.

I'm still braking my brain about how to make a doll large and movable at the same time, the main problem is the hip joints part. If this doll was a bit larger or more realistic she'd be hard to pose. This one will lean slightly backwards when sitting but with the torso joint moved forward it should look fine.

That's what she looks now (ignore the head line, it's not finished yet)

Oh, I forgot to show the hands, but they are boring and not finished either.
If I can't think of anything else to change I'll try to send her to printing this week...

I've made the head slightly smaller for comparison. What do you think?

(ops, are the pictures uploaded as attachments very small or is it only me? because on my computer they look much larger)

      Attached Files:

    21. wow!! wilga your third bjd?! I like more the littler (yes, the pics are small but that's fine)

    22. I chose the smaller head too ;)

I think it's more of a 4th doll... If you look at the first posts you'll see that it was a completely different doll, I call this one the version of the other but actually I had to make her from scratch. But you know the more dolls you make the easier it is... I hope!!! XD

    23. Ahhh, it's a shame you dropped the project for the larger plus-size doll. There aren't really any 60cm chubby dolls on the market, and there's definitely a demand for them. And yours looked GREAT! The couple of bodies our there that do have heavier torsos don't continue the fat distribution into the limbs, which yours did, and which was part of what made your design so awesome. I do hopw you find the inspiration to pick it up again some time in the future.

    24. Kiyakotari, Thank you!
Actually I never thought of making the doll as large as 60cm! (It's too large and expensive for me >.<;)
Maybe I'll try to make another one, different shape but same idea, around 30cm... I'm afraid to go larger than that, at least for now. It's quite expensive to print them and then I always make mistakes and have to reprint parts.

For now I have photos from the tiny one. Surprisingly I'm quite happy with her (but I have to repeat the face for the eye sockets and upper leg because she likes bending her knees way too much)

I'm trying to make her a dress now (and that's when I wish so much she wasn't just 14cm tall, everything must be so tiny...)

    25. Interesting.
I'm sure it will suit some people's tastes.

I would be even more wonderful if you can get some soft materials for it.

    26. The 14cm one looks great, too! I love her tummy. ^_^ Since these are originally designed in 3D, it's possible to scale them up and down, isn't it? Would it be possible to do the test prints in the smaller scale (and get the kinks and problems worked out), and then perhaps do a larger print with a scaled-version of the final design? If, for example, you had a person who was interested in funding the printing of a larger version of the doll?

I know that I would be interested in a 58cm version of that 14cm girl, if she could be scaled up for printing!

    27. Lavandula, It would be great to have soft materials! I thought of silicon, but in my experience it changes quite a lot with time so... it wouldn't be a good choice. Maybe I just used the wrong kind.

Kiyakotari, yes the tummy was fun to make :P Yes, I think it's a good idea to have tests of the doll in smaller version, I think it should be the same...but when I send dolls to print, sometimes I get the message that some parts are too thin to be printed, so smaller versions would need some readjustments that the larger ones wouldn't, but, yeah, maybe I'll try that with the next doll.

The problem with the 14cm one is that I planned her to be small and when scaled up she might look strange, larger dolls seem to be much more detailed and this one is so simple. Also, the cuts on the joints for the string would look huge when scaled up, wouldn't they?

(58cm sounds huge to me :P my largest doll is a MSD)

    28. Hi :)

      Well, now I'm working on a new body (yet again!) ^o^;
The idea is still the same but now I want it to be a bit less chibi like and a bit more realistic (I think I got the chibi thing out of my system now ;P) here's what I've done so far (it's very unfinished but the general shape will probably remain like this)

      View attachment 519

Now, the faces are very hard! I didn't have any specific idea in mind soooo...
This is the face I made long time ago and didn't like but I sort of do now:

      View attachment 520

The very last face: (this is the face that appears in the first photo with the body)

So, that's all for now.... what face do you like? :)
