a BJD in a MOVIE or VIDEO?

Apr 16, 2007

    1. That was amazing! Dose any one eals think she rimends you of lady gaga? Other then that i love the twist at the end! So many prity dolls...

    2. i know there was another manga with ABJDs i can't remember the name atm but i know it was the two BJD's became human at night with the help with a kiss off affection from their owner and they would help other dolls its a really sweet manga from what i can remember reading.

i would love to read the manga again does anyone remember the name of it?

    3. Shounen Dolls, appropriately enough.:D

    4. There's Lovers Doll by Mishima Kazuhiko, too. It's very similar to Shounen Dolls in a lot of ways.
      http://www.mangafox.com/manga/lovers_doll/
It's a Yaoi/Boy's Love story about this college-aged boy who buys a 'cursed' BJD off an auction site. It's 'cursed' because it comes to life at night with the love of it's owner.

    5. Not really a movie, but Satyricon has a BJD in one of their music videos. It's black metal so maybe not everyones cup of tea. You can see glimpses of it throughout the video, but no closeups.

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NQQdsKH3Qt8

    6. I saw a whole bookshelf of BJDs in a Korean Drama once. It was called."In Soon is Pretty." It was a rad drama, too, before all the links died and I couldn't find it anymore. Anyway, there's a younger rich gal who shows up after a few episodes, and she has a bookcase of resin pretties.
The drama, by the way, is not about dolls. :/

    7. You know that's one of my favourite songs and I never noticed a BJD in that video. O_O Way to go, me. :P

    8. I searched and didn't see this show mentioned elsewhere but I saw an anime today called Trouble Chocolate. There is a character, Hinano, who is ball jointed. She is technically a puppet made of wood but she has joints just like a BJD. ^^

    9. One the game front BJDs are also in Ar Tonelico 2 (Jacqlis cosmosphere features a BJD shop with parts in it)

    10. Hmm, I never noticed that Metis' joints look ball jointed. You'd think Aigis' would be as well.

Anyway, I know that I posted this in another thread a while ago as well, but since we're on the subject of ball joint dolls in video games, I've seen a couple more.

First is Ashlotte from Soul Calibur 4. Her in game shots are more BJD-esque, and if I remember right she even makes some slight creaking and knocking sounds that are reminiscent of actual BJDs.

      Ashlotte character art is here:
      http://www.videogamesblogger.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/05/ashlotte-in-soul-calibur-4.jpg

      Ashlotte in-game screenshot:
      http://soulcalibur.neoseeker.com/w/i/soulcalibur/thumb/2/2d/Ashlotte_sc4.jpg/250px-Ashlotte_sc4.jpg

And also from Shadow Hearts Covenant, Cornelia, Gepetto's marionette, resembles a BJD (pic may be NSFW. Geppeto looks like a creep in the picture, but it's the best to demonstrate Cornelia's joints):
      http://media.giantbomb.com/uploads/0/1976/223580-sh2_gepetto_super.jpg

    11. Yay for Morikubo!
It seems that Morikubo really likes BJDs. I've seen several clips of him and some seiyuu friends out and about playing around with their BJDs and taking pictures of them.
It is awesome to see people like him with a BJD.

    12. There are some in the drama Bad Boy. They are just in the background, the daughter of the chaebol says she collects them.

    13. There's a couple of BJD's in the Korean live action drama version of Playful Kiss!

    14. I dont know if this was mentioned before... but I saw a bjd looking doll in the teaser for hansel&gretel ->http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3p_eHsvCprM
at 0:35! I think it is one...

And Im going to watch doll master and other horror movies with bjds i can find this weekend <3 this weekend is horror movie days with my friends LOL

and in a lot of ali projects music videos are bjds :3 i LUV them

    15. I know someone mentioned Paprika earlier and someone said there weren't BJDs in it...

I just rewatched Paprika, and there are BJDs in it (as much as they can be in an anime). They're sitting on the shelves in Hirumo's (I think that was his name) room with all the others doll and robots bits.

    16. Heh, in that trailer, looks like an SD head on an MSD body X3 but very cool, still!
Also, holy crap I've loved Ali Project forever but never watched any videos... Never noticed the BJDs O__O but seeing dolls in Japanese music videos doesn't surprise me.

And to whoever pointed out that the Rozen Maiden's aren't BJDs, A plus to you :3 they're made of Bisque and I think they have more of a wind-up-springs system rather than being strung together.

    17. I think they are at least partially strung; when Shinku breaks and is healed, there are images of strings reforming within the limbs.

    18. I didn't see one in a movie but in a show i watch all the time on TV... I was not sure what kind of doll it was but it was a BJD i was unable to see the face of the doll, but it was sitting on Abbi's desk from NCIS one of the new episodes last week.

    19. The only movie I've seen with a BJD is Dollmaster, because that's the basis of the movie.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this, but I'm actually very curious. In Big Bang Theory, when they go to the rennaissance fair Howard has a jester wand staff thing with a head on it. Everytime I look I swear to God it's a BJD head because it seriously looks like one. I asked a friend if I was crazy and she said it looked like one too. Whether it was or not is a mystery, but the style was similar.

    20. Oh, I watched that Cinderella movie the other day! For anyone that has netflix, it's up for instant streaming.

    21. You know... I've yet to actually notice them in any other movie aside from the doll specific movies like Doll Master. I'd like to see another movie like that one some time. I SO wanted them to come alive and start running around like Chuckie. I think I'd be even MORE inclined to buy one. IT'S ALIVVEEEE!!!

      • x 1
    22. isn't it strange that they only seem to be featured in the horror genre (excluding Death Note--though I suppose that's kind of debatable since it's still dark)?

I mean, I guess I don't have a problem with it since I do love me some scary movies. XD

Are there any English titles that feature BJDs?

    23. Not really. Fear of dolls is one of the most common phobia's, so movie makers play into that.

    24. I've always loved dolls, and friends I've had growing up shared this same love. In fact, while I've come accross people who may have felt that dolls were simply uninteresting when compared to, say, clothes and romance, I've never come accross somone who either hated or feared dolls, or both. In fact, I actually didn't realize that people could fear dolls until I became involved in BJD's. Even then, I had to read about the phobia in the forums, as I've had nothing but positive reactions to my BJD when I carry her out and about. I did finally learn that one of my husbands' nephews tends to have reservations about dolls who look like specific people, but that's mostly due to his associations with the idea of voodoo dolls, but that's the extent of my experience with people who can be afraid of dolls. So, for me, the idea that the fear of dolls is common is a surprising bit of information, but it certainly does explain why I seem to rarely encounter dolls outside of the horror genre.

I would so love to see a movie in which dolls, and BJD's, in particular, are portrayed in a positive light. In the supernatural doll stories thread, there are plenty of stories in which BJD's have served as very strong protectors against very dark, frightening entities. I'm thinking that would be a lovely basis for a movie plot, no? Anyone know if such movies actually exist?

    25. Okay I have a quick question. Is there any movie that BJDs have been showed in that wasnt horror? I have the Death Note live movies and saw them so I got that. Buuut I am just curious.

    26. I've collated most of the findings so far, just so the same movies etc. don't get posted over and over again. I thought it would be nice for people who post in the thread in the future to have a list to refer to so the content can be kept fresh from this point on! 27. Okay I haven't read this whole thread or anything but did anyone notice the table full of bjds and bjd parts in Kuroshitsuji in the.. like... last.... episode featuring enchanted dolls? :sweat
I was really excited when I saw them XD

EDIT! I think that commercial for eye drops that featured hundreds of minifees should be added to the list, just sayin' XD

      • x 1
    28. If you can find the commerical and link it, that would be cool : )

    29. Thanks for compiling this list, Enky.

I love NCIS, and especially Abby! Does anyone know which episode had the BJD?

    30. There are some Anime movies and series that feture BJDs. Of hand I can think of Rozen Maiden- which is an anime series about BJDs that come to life and fight with evil BJDs and also have a very Kawaii or "cute" home life.
There is Also Ghost in the shell : Innocence . Which is a movie about androids that look very much like Bjd's. More "adult" than Rozen Maiden but not in a sexy sort of way.

This is from Wikipedia (which was probably written by someone here :)

"Asian BJDs have been featured in movies and other works. The Korean horror movie Doll Master from 2004[27] and the Taiwanese drama film Spider Lilies from 2007 feature BJDs. The virtual band Mistula is composed of customized BJDs, Super Dollfie and Delf dolls. "

    31. Ok, ive looked EVERYWHER!!!
Is there is anywhere to find DollyVariety?
Its not on youtube or anywhere else, has anyone put it up somewhere else?

      Quick edit!!!!!!!
I was just watching an anime, it is a slightly adultish-eayh-dont-watch-it-if-under-17 anime, but It has a BJD in the frame for a second, I dont know if I am aloud to put the name on her, so tell me who I can ask if I am aloud to put the name>.<

    32. Don't know if someone mentioned this one yet, I know for a fact that there was BJDs in the Korean Drama, "Bad Guy".
One of the lead females collects them in the movie, and when I first saw them I flailed all over the place.

Oh! And another one, in the music video "Without A Heart", the girl actor, So Hee, carries around a BJD.

    33. Thank you for making this list! When asking about a BJDs in Media database, some of the forum moderators suggested that I try making one in their wiki. I was thinking that this would be a good idea. That way, no single person has to be responsible for keeping such a database up to date. People can just come and add things as they come accross them. Would you mind, too terribly, if this list is used as a starting point for that kind of a database in the wiki?

    34. Indeed it is, and I know that I know the mold...grr. I can't remember.

    35. Dead Silence, not exactly OUR type of dolls but still BJD in a way

sidenote: only horror movies have BJD´s in them
sidenote2: always a girl in a frilly dress has the BJD!!!
sidenote3: if the girl is singing a song.. gtfo and run!!!!!!

    36. Not in a movie/music video buuttt...

I guess this might not be too surprising :P I have issues of Animerica magazine from 2004 to about 2006 I think, and in the con reports where they document cosplay, there are pictures of cosplayers with BJDs :D I wonder if any go on the forums!

Also, I have an issue of Animerica which has a section that covers garage kits, figures, Paper Moon dolls and what not. There's a picture of a Dollfie Dream next to a bunch of Volks clothes for sale!

It's interesting thinking back on how I was in 4th/5th grade reading those magazines, had no clue about BJDs, and here I am! I distinctly remember the Dollfie Dream and Paper Moon dolls. I thought they were cool xP

    37. I watched a Japanese horror movie with what I think was a Blythe doll in it, I don't really remember or know if that counts >.>

but anyway, a little girl had a favorite doll, blythe, and at the end of the movie the doll becomes possessed by the little girl's spirit after she is murdered by her father. I noticed that in most movies, with dolls in them, they tend to have crappy actors but this one actually had actors that were believable. It was a good movie! I actually didn't know that it was Blythe in the movie but I was looking for BJD socks on ebay and a picture of Blythe showed up and I recognized her as the possessed doll from the j-horror film :)

    38. I have yet to see a BJD in movie but I have seen them in anime and manga of Another. There's going to be a live action as well, so I'm looking forward to seeing BJDs in it. :D

    39. I have Reincarnation, Wishing stairs, Death Note and 3 Extremes and When I saw them I didn´t know BJDs.... I need to watch them again. And since I´m a big Asian horror movie fan I am definitely buying Cinderella and Doll Master.

    40. Like NoraNeko said there is a BJD (looks like it could be a hand made one) in the third part of 3 Extremes. It's in the part called "Box"

    41. Wait where were BJD's in Kuroshitsuji?

Are they talking about Drocell and the girls who were turned into living dolls?

....I don't know if Drocell counts though...I mean he's a puppet...There's also the dolls in the shop in Rozen Maiden Traumend. The man who made Barasuishou has several BJD's in his shop besides her.

BTW I'm watching Dollmaster right now on Youtube (anyone want the link?) and I was wondering....Does Customhouse still make those sculpts?

      Just curious for future reference...

    42. If I remember correctly a lot of the sculpts shown more close up in Dollmaster were limiteds (or at least limited versions were produced for promotion) for the movie. And even if they're not, I think CustomHouse/Aidolls currently has a stop on production until they can catch up on orders. You'd probably be better off looking for one secondhand.

    43. Thanks for answering my question. I know Customhouse has been on Hiatus ordering wise for awhile but I got curious. I'll keep my eye out but I'm not gonna rush if I happen to come across one at a good price yay. If not...*shrug* I'll just be satisfied with my girl and see if I can replicate some of the costumes.

EDIT: I just finished it....I wanted to hug poor Mina and Damian....Does that sound weird? I felt more sorry for the owners and their dolls then the other characters.

    44. Oh, I know. I think being doll owners gives us something of a different perspective on the situations in the movie than the average viewer. Chaeri cosplayed as Mina at the convention last weekend (and a few people actually recognized her!), and we watched the movie on Monday night for the 9847230498th time...and of course Ri-ri cried again. I'd like to think I'm not as...ah...dedicated a doll owner as Youngha, but Damien's devotion to her was (to me) very touching.

    45. I agree...I really felt sad for Mina and Damien. His devotion to Youngha was just...Sweet. It felt like he was trying to protect her. And Mina well....She meant well and just didn't seem to know what to do with herself.

    46. It's called Another. and its on hulu. i have watched a few episodes.

Even the episode titles are centered on steps of making a bjd. i just finished an episode where they go into a shop with dolls everywhere.

just thought it would be interesting to mention.

      • x 1
    47. I adore anime and this definitely sounds like an interesting one. I barely come across anime that are based on dolls besides Rozen Maiden so this would be a great addition to my ever growing addiction. xD

      • x 1
    48. Be warned that Another is a very creepy and gory series. But yes, a number of episodes do take place in the doll shop.

      • x 1
    49. I watched a very interested Asian Thriller, I think it was Japanese, called Goth in which the main "goth" girl has a BJD in a little shrine above her bed. I see it as a pretty interesting thing for them to slip in, the girl having accidentally killed her sister when they were younger, and the way the doll sits there always watching over her dressed in the same outfit she died in. And that's with all the spoilers filtered out! And trust me, when you watch the movie you'll learn it's not a guardian angel thing...

    50. Were the mangas "Doll" and "Dolls" ever made into anime? I know the manga themselves have come up on the forums before, because I think that's how I first learned about them. They are a sort of Science Fiction interpretation of the doll owners mentalities and I think they would make cool short films, maybe even in real life.

I really want to get my hands on some of these horror films everyone keeps finding. I think I would get a kick out of watching them with some of my friends. They thought they were afraid of dolls... well.... we'll see about that! :...(

    51. theres a Jap movie called Dolls (http://www.mysoju.com/japanese-movie/dolls/) dont know if its about the manga or anything

but spiderlilies a taiwan movie ive seen has bjds in it....if you scroll up youll see my post from before.

    52. I just watched a Chinese horror film called Baby Blues (not to be confused with the American film with the same title) that has a doll that seams to be inspired by a BJD. At first I thought it was a rough artist made BJD, but as the film progressed, there were shots of the neck and wrists that revealed it wasn't actually jointed. Even so, the size of the doll, the way it looks and the way the main characters treat it (before figuring out it's evil) really made me think of a BJD.

    53. It could possibly have been mentioned before, but I remember reading a manga about a girl who could speak to toys, and who had a doll(that resembled a BJD, I think) that turned into a boy when she kissed his hand every night? There ended up being two dolls eventually... But for the life of me I can't remember what it's called...

Nevermind! I found it! It was called Shounen Dolls

    54. It hardly counts as a major plot point, but the kdrama Bachelor' Vegetable Store (or something) has a Volks four sisters in the beginning haha. I was pretty delighted for that to just randomly appear.

    55. Not major plot points either, but I saw two J-horror movies recently with BJD artist dolls-- the live action version of "Another", and a movie called "Bilocation". The dolls were big, at least half size, beautiful, and a little creepy. :)
