A belated hello!

Apr 10, 2025

    1. Hi, I'm Kiri!

I technically joined DoA six years ago, right before I bought my first doll, though I never actually introduced myself - I was fourteen, and very worried about what people thought of me, so I decided not to take pictures or display her until she was finished, aka perfect. I mostly just kept her in her box. I took her out occasionally to work on, but I didn’t have the skill to make something that felt “good enough” and my motivation slowly dwindled.

A couple of months ago I realized how silly that was; the point of dolls is to enjoy them! So I got her out of her box and decided to keep her on my dresser for as long as she made me happy, “finished” or not, and I've been having a wonderful time ever since. They quickly got a whole new character and (slightly shoddy) outfit – it turns out purple doesn't look great on a doll with years of yellowing – and I'm planning on getting them a friend sometime this year!

I also have been actively making dolls for about a decade now, dabbling on a bunch of techniques but always coming back to bjds. I'm a bit obsessed with engineering in dolls as a result! I'll definitely be sharing some of those projects too.

I'm looking forward to being a part of this fantastic community!!

    2. Welcome back. I'm in a bit of the same boat as well. I joined quite some time ago and just got the courage to start posting my doll journey. I've learned to love my first perfectly imperfect doll since then. Afterall, we all started somewhere, and as long as it makes us happy that's what matters. :) I hope we get to see some of your work when you're ready to share.

    3. Welcome back

Have you tried anything to reduce the yellowing? I have had quite good results with giving the parts an overnight soak in Poildent denture cleaner

    4. Aww, thank you! :)

It's nice to see I'm in good company! I love the phrasing of “perfectly imperfect”, it really describes them so well. All the little flaws and details that we could worry over are what makes our dolls uniquely ours! Is she the one in your profile picture? She's such a cutie!

I actually just started sculpting a new doll last week, so I'll make a project journal for that soon! As soon as I sort out flickr, lol :sweat

    5. Ooo! I’d never heard of that method before; I thought I was going to have to dye them back to normal. I even already have some lying around! I'll test it out on some spare hands and then try it out next time I redo their faceup! I assume they'd need to be blank so the sealant wouldn't interfere with the process?

I’d have to learn to restring their jointed hands, but I've been putting that off for too long anyway, and it would be a great opportunity to do the gradient dye on their fingers that I've been wanting.

      Thanks for the advice!

    6. That's right. It's worked well, for me, on regular resin but not had much effect on the one piece of French resisn I tried it on.

      Best of luck

    7. That's good to know, thanks Teddy!

    8. Just popped back to check whether you've had a chance to try de-yellowing with Polident yet?
