8/23/09-8/29/09: Coloring+ Contest!

Aug 23, 2009

    1. This contest is open to all staff and all members who joined the forum before 8/15/2009.

This picture was drawn as a collaboration between Aimee Major, former owner of Den of Angels, and armeleia, the current owner of Den of Angels. The original purpose was for a little mini DoA "zine" that we were going to have printed... but we ran out of time! Not wanting to waste the picture, we decided to put it to a different use. (Aimee M drew the girl on the right, armeleia drew the girl on the left.)

      How to enter

      This is a Coloring+ contest!

To enter, start by printing out this picture. (If you are using Internet Explorer, right click the link and choose "Save Target as" to save the image to your computer. It will not open through Internet Explorer.)

Color the picture in whatever color motif you would like! You may also...

      ...Draw on additional details!
      ...Add a background!
...Cut out the drawing and paste it onto a different background!
...Print it onto a different colored paper to have a different look from the start!
...Embellish with stickers, rhinestones, or collage!

It can be as simple or as complex as you like, but you can only add on to the image! This means that you cannot erase or redraw any part of the image, and the whole image must be used.

Also, this is for traditional media ONLY. No digital coloring or computer effects. Print it out, work with the physical image, and scan or photograph it back in.

When you send us the image, please size it to approximately 600 pixels tall.

You will also need to be able to provide a high resolution, 300 dpi or higher version of the image if you win. Please do not enter if you cannot provide this.

Please send the picture to Truffle. You must put a note in the subject of the PM stating that the entry is for the Coloring+ Contest.

      You may only enter ONCE.

There should be no personally identifying information on the picture - no name, username, email, or watermark.

Do not post your version elsewhere prior to completion of voting; doing so will remove your entry from the contest. As with the winter contests, we wish for the entries to be anonymous in order to make voting more fair.

Entries must be received by August 27th at 11:59pm EST. NO EXCEPTIONS.

      Voting

Entries will be posted on DoA on August 28th for voting. Voting will run from August 28th to August 29th.

The winner will be decided by member vote via PM.

      Prizes

      There will be 3 winners!

The creator of the entry with the most votes will receive a new, unpainted Tinybear Mina the Mermaid! Your mermaid will be a tan girl with a blue tail (not pictured - this is a stock photo!). Tinybear has also said that she will make a white mohair wig so that she will not come bald!

The second and third-place winners will receive $20 gift certificates to Featherfall!

The entries by all three winners will be used to create journals for DoA to sell through our CafePress shop. By entering, you are allowing us to use your colored version for this.

      Other

After the contest, you will be welcome to post up your colored version, but please be sure to give credit for the line work to Aimee Major and armeleia, as they are the creators of the image.

    2. My computer won't show the image when I try to get to the larger version! Any tips? ^^;

    3. Yeah, it's not showing up for me either ^^;
Should we just use the sample image instead? o,0

    4. I just tested it and it works for me...? The sample is much too low-resolution to use; please don't use it, it won't be suitable for print. Please try a hard refresh (CTRL+F5) and try again.

    5. It's not showing up for me either, even after i hit Ctrl+F5

    6. Me either!! :( I really want to do this, but it doesn't look like it's working...

    7. it won't show up for me either...

    8. It works fine for me. I opened it in Mozilla and Safari and it works great. EDIT: I tried to open it with Internet Explorer, and it will not open, so it may be an issue with that browser because it still works fine in Mozilla and Safari.

    9. Hm, it's showing up for me all right, too (I'm also using Firefox)

      I have a few questions though :)

Can we change the size of the image? I mean if we want to add on things, can we use more space than the already existing white area around the lineart?

Also - if I decide to add on stickers, rhinestones etc. can I put them on in a way that covers certain parts of the lineart (just a minimal part...to...make it more integrated into the picture) or do I have to keep all the lineart totally intact?

This contest sounds really fun - I hope I'll have enough time to enter :D

    10. For people using IE, right-click the image and choose "save target as." This will allow you to save the image to your computer. After that, you can use another program (not Internet Explorer) to open the picture without problems. :)

The bulk of the image needs to be visible, but little bits being covered would be okay.

    11. I don't have a "save target as" function... Is there any way to fix the image for internet explorer?

    12. The "Save Target As" is only there when you right click on the link... I tested this in IE and it worked, so I don't know how to help you. :sweat

I don't know what about it is lousing up internet explorer, so I have no idea how to fix it... there's nothing wrong with the file itself. I'd recommend just using another browser.

    13. Glad I'm not the only one who was having a problem! Right clicking the link & saving it worked for me, thanks for the tip! :) This will be fun! And lovely picture, btw!

    14. Oh, I'm definitely entering this! If I have time... ^^

    15. Would it be alright to erase the small black specks around the edges of the image? :) I'm assuming they're just scanner / pencil marks. xD

    16. Yup, those little marks are, as mentioned, from the scanner and not part of the actual image. :) So they can be removed.

    17. Err, my printer is running low on ink and so the lineart printed out rather... grey. Would it be alright if I went in with an inkpen and darkened the lines myself, as long as I don't change anything at all? It's too late to go out and get ink, and I need to start ASAP due to school and things coming up... ;_;

    18. Mkayyyy, well I have IE and I can save the image to my computer ust fine..... but kind of sucks. I mean, open it in another program and its still really small to be printing out on an 8x10 sheet.

    19. Awesome! I'm going to have to sneak some cardstock to work and print the image out! XD

    20. *phew* worked it out :) right click the link itself and "save target as" :sweat took a couple of minutes but Adobe openend it just fine - resized to 20% to fit an A4 page suitable to print out and get colouring :D This is fun!!!!!

Edit to ask: When we scan it back in and save it... does it have to be portrait (as is above in the OP) or is landscape okay?

    21. Would we be allowed to adjust the scanned image a bit (brightness, darkness etc.) because my scanner isn't all that great with picking up on the brightness/darkness of an image and it always look awful without slight adjustments.

    22. It needs to be portrait because the journal orientation is portrait.

That's fine, but no computer coloring or effects. Just light touchup/cropping, etc.

    23. are we allowed to use photoshop to outline the picture then print out? >__<

    24. Sorry, but if you want to outline it, you must do it by hand after you print it out. There can be no digital augmentation to the picture except for color balance adjustments after the final image has been scanned.

    25. Count me in! This is an awesome contest! :)

    26. What are the final dimensions? I printed mine out on 8.4x14 paper so I would have a little more room to play with. I know you said make the height 600px but what about width or can that be pretty much what we want. You said that you were going to use the winning image for a journal so I guess I need to know what size paper the journal will be so I can set my dimensions accordingly.

    27. Are the entries due on the date of the 29th or like on midnight of the 29th? and are we allowed to use photoshop to color it or is the coloring to be traditional style?

Edit: Never mind, just answered my photoshop question by reading back.

    28. Neither, actually. :sweat Please see the contest description:

The final journal will be 5"x8" (portrait orientation). :) The original pictures should take up most of that space.

    29. You say we cannot do any erasing. But is it okay if some of our "embellishments" cover up the original line drawing? (example: cover the roses in their hair with sequins and beads)

    30. As long as the picture is mainly visible and nothing it redrawn, it's fine. :)

    31. Mine's in! :)

    32. Thanks armeleia. I'm going to get to work right away with this. I enjoy doing traditional works so this will be fun.

    33. i'll gladly take part in this contest.

now i need to find my art stuffs :)

      :kitty2 A.R.N.F

    34. Sweet! A contest where I can actually enter with confidence...I hope...

    35. Okay, this may seem such a dumb question, but how do you send an image through PM without having it linked to elswhere on the internet first? (Sorry, I'm not very good at forums:sweat)

    36. Thank you Armela. I managed to get something going for it that I am pleased with So Far. Boy I would have thought a coloring contest would be easier LOL. Now to see if I can still color LOL. Thanks again

    37. This sounds so fun. I'm going to gather a bunch of other local doll people and have a "coloring party"! :D

    38. You do need to upload your image and then you can send it via PM. What we ask is that you don't share the image with others or post it to your blog/ other forums/ dA/ etc.

    39. Entry submitted! I mightn't be the greatest artist in the world, but this colouring competition was just too much fun to pass up. Thank you so much for making this available - special thanks to Aimee and Armeleia, for allowing us to use their wonderful work! :)

    40. Oh yeah, that worked, cool, thanks Armeleia ^_^

    41. Wold it be acceptable, if some of the line art was covered with embellishment (specifically paper), and then a light box was used to trace the lines back over it?

    42. Would it be acceptable to rotate the image a different way than what is shown?

    43. I may not win, but I'm entering this one.

I'll just have to remember to laugh at myself when some of the other, better artists on DoA blow me out of the water. :XD:

    44. I entered... I'm more excited to see what other people do/see other entries than whether or not I win though. I really don't think I stand a chance. I just want to see how others interpreted this!

    45. The image needs to remain a portrait orientation, and needs to remain rectangular. (The journal cover is 5x8 portrait). If you can rotate the image and still fit within that proportioning, it's fine. Otherwise, it won't work.

All of the original lines need to be present. If you can accurately trace them back on, it's fine.

    46. Is it alrigth to embelish the back grounds, such as add trees or flowers for example, so long as all all the original linework is there?

edit: Never mind answered my own question again. Sorry for the bombardment. Been a little fried with work this week. Getting back to coloring now.

    47. Ah! Okay thanks. :) I think I get it now. (I'm such an idiot sometimes. :doh)

    48. Oh no! I've just about finished my entry but it's in landscape formation. I just read over some posts now and noticed it had to be portrait. Darn!
Would it be alright if I cut a bit off the landscape so it would look like a portrait? I really don't want to start over with the background. O.o
      Thanks!

    49. Can I colour this via Tablet on the computer?

    50. Please read the rules carefully. No computer coloring is allowed.

    51. Hi hi...

Is multiple copies of the image allowed and if so, may they overlap as long as every line is shown somewhere on the piece? i.e. - two images touch but one shows the lines it covers up?

    52. as long as it's done by hand, and not digitally. :)

    53. I'm taking out any info that might have made my entry obvious that it was mine! Thank you for the heads up Junkets!

      DMM :kitty2

    54. okay I have another dumb question...how do we know if we can get a resolution of 300 dpi?

    55. When you scan in your picture, you should be able to choose the scanning resolution. Default for most scanners is 200dpi, so you'll just need to change the scanning resolution to 300dpi.

Hope that helps a little. ^__^

    56. all done and I sent in my entry.

    57. no problemo! Good luck, sounds like yours will be awesome!

    58. I can't print out a decent sized version of the pciture without it being pixelated

    59. just sent mine in~! itll be great to see how different all of these pictures come out XD

    60. Mine is now on its way! Thank you for the words of support, Oodorikimura, that was very kind of you!
