6th Annual San Diego BJD Con: Saturday, November 15, 2014

Aug 17, 2014

The dates and rooms are set for the 6th Annual San Diego BJD Con! Woo-hoo! Yes, this year we'll have two rooms!

Place: Mission Bay Marina Village (1936 Quivira Way, San Diego, CA 92109), in the Starboard and Terrace rooms.

      Date: Saturday, November 15, 2014

      Hours: 10am to 4pm.

      Cost: $10 at the door

Theme: This year's doll costume theme is 'Fairy Tales'. There will be prizes for best costume as voted on by attendees. What exactly constitutes a fairy tale is up to you, and I'd suggest including a small card naming your fairy tale. No display can be larger than 16" wide, 16" deep, or over 3 feet high in order to give everyone room to place their dolls.

Food: There will be snacks and drinks provided.

There will be door prizes, costume prizes, and lots of awesome stuff! Looking forward to another great year!

      Vendors include:
      The Doll Peddlar
      Habit's Rabbits BJD Shop
      Studio KNH
      Mischief Maker
      PamSD's Miniature Costuming

    2. Quite interested in attending this! Will there be panels and such to attend? I'd love to see more info online. :D

    3. Already have my vendor's table. Very excited about this convention.

    4. It's closer to like an extended / glorified doll meet. There will be display area, place to chat, food and lots and lots of stuff to buy (more vendors this year!!). In the past we tried a few short workshops - but it was hard to hear and most people were more interested in talking/buying/taking photos of dolls.

To give you an idea here are photos of some of the prior years events:

    30. This will be my first year attending and I'm taking my twin sister along with me. We're so excited! I'll be bringing my Volks SD Nana and my Old FCS F-07. Anyone feel free to say hi if you see me! I'm looking forward to meeting other local BJD fans. :)
A quick question, do we have to do anything special to enter the costume contest like preregister our entry or something? Thanks!

    31. Was looking on the website for the costume contest rules and couldn't find any. I know for most Cosplay (human) contests, there are usually standards in place. Is it not the same for Dolly contests?

    32. Hey guys! There is no pre-registration for the costume contest. You just show up at the door, pay the entrance fee, and you'll be give a few different things, including a pamphlet, display card for entering the contest, and a voting ballet for the contest, things like that. Yeah, you just show up, display your dolls at the large display table. RedYume, as for standards, what do you mean? As in the quality of the costume? In those terms, there aren't really any. Your costume can be hand made to any quality, or even store bought.

    33. Thank you Shinigami!
What I was referring to was- does it have to be handmade? In most cosplay contests, there is generally a rule of 80% or so is made by the wearer/friend/family/cosplay group, that the costume was not a commission (no money exchanged hands from costumer to model- if they're different) etc. There is sometimes a release for images of the costume (and hence cosplayer) to be used in future advertisements and whatnot. Sometimes there are standards about whether or not a costume can be entered if it has won previously at a different event. I'm just one of those OCD, cross the T's and dot the I's person. Too many contests in other realms I guess, lol. I'm QUITE excited for the con!!!
So you answered my question about the standards- It can be handmade, can be purchased, it can be modded/augmented/altered store bought (I assume). I just wanted to be sure before I delve into something and have my doll in, say, purchased shoes/socks/whatever and have it be a problem.

Thank you SO much for the quick reply!

    34. No problem! Yeah, there's no standards for whether or not its handmade. I kind of wish there was a separate section for handmade, but it is what it is. I love the challenge of making things by hand, especially small scale for dolls. I'm actually trying to complete some outfits for this con, so hopefully I can get them done in time!

    35. Thank you Shinigami for you wonderful answers about the costume contest.

The only limitation we ask on the costumes is that you don't bring something that's over 18" wide, 18" deep, or over 36" tall. We want to have enough room for everyone to display their creations!

The theme this year is Fiesty Fairytales, and sig-up begins at 11 AM on the day of the con. However, you can go ahead and setup your doll(s) anytime after we open at 10 AM, and then sign-up at 11 and add your assigned number to your display.

I would suggest bringing along a small card to display with what fairytale you are doing. We will have 3x5 notecards for you to do it there, if you like.

See everyone in 8 days! :dance :dance

    36. I'll probably throw my dolls at the costume contest, but I'm not "in it to win it". It's hopeless anyway! I was going to sew and do all sorts of things but I don't feel like it anymore so I'm going to scavenge bits of outfit from other dolls.

    37. Thanks so much RedYume, ShinigamiDuoLover, and brucedabold for your answers about the costume contest! See everyone soon! :)

    38. Too bad not in Cali. Maybe another year. :)

    39. On Saturday I was by a Jo-Ann Fabric store and decided on a whim to check out what fabrics were on clearance. Once I saw a few things I decided to make a quick costume for one of my girls :-D Finished it a few hours ago and I'm pretty pleased with it despite my limited sewing abilities~ Can't wait to see what everyone else does for the contest :-D

    40. Should be a great costume contest, with a Volks doll as a prize! Everyone's work is usually great anyway. I can't wait to see it, myself.

I'm definitely NOT doing the costume contest this year. I have several Volks dolls already and don't need any more dolls (I have way too many and I don't like to sell dolls, so they've all stayed here--and I've had bjds since 2004). I'll dress up my dolls and bring them along, though! The con is always a lot of fun. I can't wait!

    41. Going to be there tomorrow!

    42. The convention was so fun! Hoping to attend again next year. :) Might even try to vend!!

    43. Great convention! Thank you so much for having it! See you next year!

    44. A wonderful time--AGAIN! Thanks to everyone who helped put on this event--and who helped make those amazing dioramas! And to everyone who went and brought their amazing dolls--and selves! And thanks to all the great vendors who threatened to drain my bank account. And to special guests, Volks! They gave a wonderful Costume Contest prize. And the vendors were amazing--contributing a TON of door-prizes! Wow. :D

    45. I hope everyone had fun! Boy - it was a lot of work, and I wished I had more time to shop and doll gaze! I noticed less dolls on tables this year.... Seemed like people were there for SHOPPING and there was shopping to be had, but less time to sit and chat I suppose. And two rooms did spread everyone out - but at that site - we sort of had to do that - was not one good sized room that would hold everything! (that wasn't set aside just for weddings).

My camera DIED (at the con! *shakes fist at stupid camera*), so no photos from me. I hope there were someone who got some who can start the photo thread. There were a LOT of super costume entries!

    46. Thank you so much to Bruce, all the volunteers, and all the fantastic vendors! It was so nice to meet other fans and see so many beautiful dolls. The day was a complete dream come true for me! I can't believe I won first place and got to take home SDM Mako! Thank you so much to everyone who voted for my Snow White costume. It means so much to me. :fangirl:

    48. Had a GREAT time! BIG thanks to all the folks that work so hard to put together this wonderful event every year. The display area was so detailed and amazing as always. The vendors were fabulous with all their goodies to tempt me and so generous with their door prizes. I think almost everyone went home with something.

I just love the enthusiasm and creativity that everyone puts into the costume contest. Here are some pictures I took:
