50–65cm Dolls 65cm male head

I decided to spend the Thanksgiving holiday doing something more productive than eating pumpkin pie and sleeping. So here's the progress on my Holiday Head, so far!

Rough diagram of the head on a body. (There will be a body someday.) The smaller outline is the pattern for the foam core, about 1/4" smaller all around than the finished head.

Forming the core. Static charged pellets of styrofoam everywhere.

Here I am rolling out the paperclay. I'm using Premiere. There are 1/4" dowels to either side, to keep the thickness uniform.

Blob on a stick!

Mr. Blob starts to have features. I cut eye and neck holes while the clay was dry on the surface but still damp underneath. I also shortened him up, since the head had mysteriously grown taller after being wrapped in clay. Then he went into a low oven for a while, since it's easier to add features when the surface is dry.

I'm working on the base shape, trying to get the structure right before I add more features. Chin, jaw, crooked nose etc.

Here I've put in some sacrificial acrylic eyes (12mm, though 10mm might have been better). I find this helps with modeling the eyes, plus I'll have starter eyewells when I open up the head. I just have to be careful to get them the right depth.
