MSC turning white during coating?

Jan 4, 2005

1. Help! I tried to coat my Lishe and I think I put too much and there is this ugly white residue...what did I do wrong and how do I do it right next time? I feel awful...
Also, how do I get the washer into a CP doll head? I really suck at this lol.

[EDIT] Anybody know how to fix just one thing painted wrong?

2. Ack! How close are you holding the can? You need to hold it at LEAST a foot away from the area being sprayed. Spray in short sweeps of the area in the same direction each time (so if you start left to right, continue left to right). You only need a few bursts at a time, then allow it to dry for a few minutes and add a second coat and maybe a third - you really don't need much more than that ^_^

3. Thanks for the advice, I guess I'll have to redo it again today.

4. Shake the can before you use it, too. And make sure the area you are using it in is not too cold or too hot.

Good luck...

5. Re: Washer

I know there's a way to loop the string loop around it easily, it might be in Aimee's FaQ? Or you can just do what I did and use a key ring. *laughs*

6. Thanks :) I think it was some of everything, stupid me.

I think I need to get real acetone though to get it off , nail polish remover is too weak...What do you think?

7. Well the thing is that there is that huge knot...also i forgot how to hold it open when i'm trying to get the washer on...

8. I think with the washer you pull the knot through the middle and loop it around somehow. ^^; The keyring you just thread it on the two strings. ^^

Most people stick something through the loop to keep it from disappearing down inside the doll. I used a screwdriver. It looked pretty disturbing. ^^;

9. lol thanks...yeah I'll go with the washer for that reason.
I mean, I can't even coat the doll...who knows what other horrors I am capable of.

10. I think when it's too humid you get that whiteness, too. I remember coating a 1/6th in the early winter when it had been humid for a few days and her whole body turned white.

11. Well, it was freezing cold here at the time, probably why.

What I want to know is how you got it off...that's my dilemma.

12. i completely resanded the body u.u

i don't know of any other way other than scraping it off and you risk scratching doing that

13. Oh, ok *sticks to plan of buying acetone* I'll try that if the acetone doesn't work though.

14. Washer:

The washer you need to get is the one that has this number 5689 1/2" comes in pack of 4.

To do this get a really soft and flexible hanger and cut off the top hook then fold the hanger in half, you may want to use a plier to squeeze the loop( a loop will form when you fold the hanger in half) small so that it will go thru the washer. then remove your doll head cap off and lift the head up so the strings are exposed in the neck area then stick a pen or chopsticks or anything that will hold in place and won't slip below the hanger. Then stick your hanger creation thru the 2 white strings then lift up the doll's head and push thru the hole and out of the doll's head on top. Now you will insert the washer thru both wire of your hanger creation and putting the doll between your knees and pull the two white strings thru the washer just enough so you can slip the "S" hook (I have my dad make me big S hook that he bends from a hard wire that is not so thick as the S hook) and have it lie flat on the washer or on the side. Then before you take your pen/chopstick out from the neck, make sure everything is intact then take out your hanger creation and then your pen/chopstick and put the head cap on and you're done.

Hope this is somewhat clear, if not let me know and I'll see if I can find pics for this process.

Dee-

15. Thanks~ I'll have to try that after I remedy the calamity that is the MSC >>

16. I'm fairly sure that MSC is lacquor based, therefore a lacquor remover would be most effective. I know it is in my case. However, 100% acetone will remove it eventually. It'll just take longer and require a little more scrubbing.

17. Acetone worked fantastically and like magic now I have to work on not sucking at customizing.
Anybody know how to fix just one thing painted wrong?

18. I just recently painted a modded head so that its ears could match the resin. I let the paint dry for a couple of hours and figured it would be safe to coat them with MSC. I let the head sit overnight and this morning found weird white areas where I had painted. Is this because the paint may have not dried properly? There are no white spots where there is no paint.

Any ideas or suggestions would be helpful!

Thanks

19. It may be the climate conditions and that its just harder to tell if it chaged where there is no paint.

Edit: When I got to the end of the can my MSC frosted on the edge of an arm I coated but I don't know if thats the same thing.

20. This afternoon I sprayed one of my girls' feet in prep for blushing and there were suddenly white areas where I had sanded before, but none where there was no sanding. It didn't show before I sprayed. I also get white spots from using acetone or alcohol and it not being tohroughly washed off. Maybe it is just a strance chemical reaction or difference in texture? Coating can be so weird sometimes... >.<

21. when i sprayed Sage his faceup was ruined, the white spots where parts that wern't covered 0_o cuz..it didn't spread proparly

22. That usually happens when the paint/doll is still wet.

23. it can be happen if the weather is cold or it's raining [and when it's moist]
or maybe you didn't shake the MSC enought. :)

24. its possible you were spraying too close

25. What kind of paint were you using? I've had the MSC react like this when applied over paint that was not yet dry because I had added Liquitex Slow Dri medium to it. :doh To be safe, I no longer use that medium (Flow Aid doesn't seem to have the same effect) and allow painting to dry overnight.

This can also happen when spraying in humid conditions and allowing the MSC to dry in the same conditions. Lately, I have been spraying outdoors as usual but rushing inside to a dry and (over)heated room to allow the MSC to dry for ten minutes or so between coats. Stinky though, so you'll need to kick any pets out of the room and wear a respirator while it evaporates.

26. Thanks everyone! Since the white spots were only on the areas where I painted, I assume its the paint. I used a retarder on the paint so that may have also affected it :) I'll make sure it dries thoroughly next time!!

27. EDIT: This is Nana's sister Yako...We share a computer, and it tends to make her post as me, and me as her at times...This is one of those really awful times....)

Okay, so, here is the problem:
My doll (a DollZone Tintan) that I got Monday is in a little bit of trouble- I THINK.
Okay, so yesterday, I just removed her face-up. I put it on. When my sister asked (holding the head) 'Did you put white pastel on her, cause there's some here..." so I looked, and it did look like some one brushed white pastel on her face. So I'm looking closer, and it looked like there was the 'pastel' layer, and then a small hole or something in the layer. Is this what they call an air bubble? O_O
I feel like an awful mommy, especily cause this is my first doll and I love her to DEATH.

Here is a list of what we used for the face-up:
Testors Dull Coat
Chalk Pastels
Another type of chalk pastels.
Q-tips
Brushes

I did her first face up Tuesday...I sprayed her head before putting on the pastels. I used maybe...4 coats-ish tops.
Then, later Tuesday, I added a tad bit of blush (pastels) to her checks. I then sprayed it again.
I'd say I was about 7-10inches away at most times, but I know that I also did get alittle closer....

So then, LATER Tuesday, when my sister got home, I took it off cause my sister and I wanted to do our face ups together.
I used:
Clear NON-ACETONE Nail Polish Remover (Cutex brand)
Mr. Clean Eraser
Dawn Dish Soup (blue...)
And some Q-tips.

So then, we did our face ups. Using the same things as before, but we also used a differnt bottle of Testors Dull Coat...We ran out about half way through -_-

So then, last night (Friday) I desided to take her face up off again, cause there where a few specs of things (one was IN her resin, but it came out, with a tiny hole now in the face T_T) And then, my sister pointed the stuff out (the white pastel-looking stuff)
So did I skrew up her resin or something? I know it wasn't there when I bought her, she was brand new...

Here's where the white is:
Around the eyes (both sides)
Eye lids
Around the nostral of the nose
and then a tad below her nose.
And behind both ears.

I did not put any pastels around the ears, I DID spray Testors there, but I DID NOT put on pastels...

Also, there is a small...not chip, but 2 small cuts(? slits...there vertical, and hardly noticeable) in the top of her eye lid...
I've painted her nails with the second can of testors, and with pastels. Her hands are still fine. I've only done that once.

So did I get a bad batch of resin, or did I royaly mess-up my first doll? I know my sisters doll (DZ SHoyo) is fine, and we got them at the same time...

Any advise is apriciated.

~Yako and her sweet Arisu (DZ Tintan)

28. I'm not positive, but I think the hole may be an air bubble. As for the white pastel-like layer, I think it may be the Testors. I've taken off a faceup before and the testors wasn't completely off, leaving some white spots. Once it's all off though, it'll return to the regular color.

Sorry if this isn't that much help.

29. Testors is a pain to get off completely.
Clean the head with rubbing alcohol (70% or 90%), let it dry -completely- and see where the white flecks show up. If none show up after the head is completely dry, then you've got it all. If there's some showing in the creases clean those spots again.

Try using a toothbrush dipped in whatever you're using to remove the faceup. They're good for getting in tight creases like the eyelids and lips.

30. Like Kaighn said, there is a keen posability that the white is testors residue, Mr. Super clear has the same problem. I reccomendgetting some windsor & newton brush cleaner and restorer, it removes things like a fiend! If that dosnt work then I can only assume it is something to due with the resin.
From personal experience I know that nail polih remover (acetone or not) can slightly lighten areas of resin. Pictures would also help us fint a solution for your problem :)

31. Okay, should I help it dry (towls? Fans?) Should I do the whole head, or just where it's white??

Alright, I'll bike up to the store soon

32. Um, I thought of posting pics, but I'm not nearly good enough with the camer for any of you to make out it being a doll >.< (okay, i'm not THAT bad...)

33. All I can offer is make sure to wash your head thoroughly after cleaning the faceup, because any extra residue from the nailpolish could melt away at the resin, and reveal hidden bubbles. (Maybe this is what happened?)

34. She's headed off to the store to get a toothbrush at the moment. As for pictures, none could come until later, our dad ran off with the camera this weekend.

Where can we find this windsor & newton brush cleaner and restorer?

35. You can find Windsor and newton brush cleaner and restorer at any art supply or craft stores, I used to use non-acetone but now i will only use the brush cleaner, works great. I remember I used non acetone remover to remove the blushing on a pair of yo-tenshi wings i had, a day later there were small needle sized holes on one of the wings, not sure how they got there, but after some sanding they were gone. I hope you can get your girl fixed up too. ^^

36. I'll just add in, 70% rubbing alcohol has been working fantastically for me removing Testors faceups. And alcohol dries itself very fast so you can see if there's residue left.

And for pities sake don't spray any closer than ten inches, 12 would be better. Spraying too close could be part of the source of the build up that's leaving the mess. Yes, if you spray correctly things will clean away better.

37. Naipolish remover eats the resin?! O_O I thought the non-acetone clear stuff wasn't susposed too O_O My poor girl!!! ><

38. Great news!!! it's mostly off! You can only tell it was there slightly, the achool and toothbrush really helped! Thank you all very much!!!

39. Hello!

Has anyone had this problem? I'm using MSC for the first time and have had mixed results. Has anyone had the MSC turn white or opaque on the doll. After spraying, the next day I had a huge line of white across the forehead. Also after spraying over acrylic paint the MSC turned the paint a paler shade an almost had a flaky quality to it?

I know I am doing something wrong. How far do you hold the MSC from the head? and do you just give it one quick spray across? I'm sure this is all just caused by my lack of skill, but I was hoping someone had overcame this dilema.

Any advice?

40. hold the can at least 10-12 inches from the head, spray in even, sustained bursts that begin and end beyond the head for full coverage.

about the white marks -- is it humid where you are? humidity will cause clouding and flaking such as you've described. so will too much MSC in one spot.

41. ^^ If you get those white spots it is as para_chan214 says-too much MSC.

If you stand back a little bit more and just do quick bursts of the spray one on each side, the front, ect. It should be okay. You dont want to get it to where it is super wet and shiney looking. Most times, it starts to flake and cause those white disruptions on the skin. <3 Hope this helps!!!

(I'd say 3-5 steps back!)

42. Also, make sure you shake the can well before spraying.

43. I actually practiced for a bit when I first started spraying MSC to get the coats just right. ^^

To get really nice results that, no spots, you should press the nozzle down fully and spray evenly. The nozzle should be fully depressed whenever it is applying spray to the doll. That way, all the "spraying pressure" of the can is released and you don't get any uneven marks. Also, I doubt this applies right now, but spray in temperatures around room temperature (not indoors though).

44. Ok I've had several problems with MSC. It just does not work. Recently I attempted to re-do my doll's tattoos (because MSC failed me the first time too).

I checked the temperature, the humidity, I shook the can for 2 minutes, made sure to spray in short bursts from 8-12 inches away, I even let the first layer set for 24 hours, and several hours between other layers. I didn't over spray I did 5. 2 for base, 1 for pencil work, then did the paint and 2 on top. I made sure everything I should do was perfect. I even opened a brand new can ( the previous one hated me too).

I took my doll to a meet by the time I arrived The msc was already gone and his tattoos coming off. He doesn't wear much clothing. None of his clothing came in contact with the tattoos what so ever, and I made sure to carry him by hand because I was afraid of the carrier rubbing. Before the Tattoo work I made sure the resin was completely clean and dry.

Previously (and the reason I had to re-do the tattoos) his MSC turned white, then black and flaked off. Prior to that my other doll had the same thing happen to his tattoo work and facial blushing. I've opened a new can each time incase it was just the can. I did a couple burts before spraying the doll incase the first sprays or so didn't have enough chemical.

Can anyone figure out why the heck MSC will not work for me? D:

45. From what you say it sounds like the MSC is reacting to climate or too much layering with the whiteness and flaking off but you have checked that. Maybe it could be the resin of the doll just rejecting the MSC. Have you tried spraying another doll?

46. She mentioned it being two dolls having issues so it can't be the reason unless the two dolls are from the same company.

I don't think its a bad batch of MSC since you've used more than one can. And over spray? I didn't really think you could xD I've done face-ups on one of my boys and he has about 9 layers of it on there, its sealed perfectly no flaking etc. And I actually spray at the most 6 inches from the face as well. When I sprayed further he actually ended up with white flakes on his forehead so it could be maybe the spray is not making the distance >.> I don't know.

If the temperature and humidity was right the spray shouldn't have flaked. Where do you store your MSC? The temperature of that area can be causing the batch to go bad.

47. did you make sure to clean the area after you waited for the msc to set? i once waited a while in between spraying and it got just a little dusty and it gave me simliar problems.

48. that's kinda weird, I'd like to see whatever solves this for you.

I've had that problem sometimes only when spraying multiple layers on wet MSC... or while spraying during winter >,>

49. maybe you're under spraying? you said short bursts. you might not be coating it evenly or not enough If you are under spraying and look very very carefully you can see" scales" some shiny and matte spots. These are kind of hard to see.

Another reason you said you're waiting 24 hours. That's a lot of time for pathogens to settle on the face. You can spray after 10 minutes.

If all fail. Could be where you got your MSC. Maybe it was a really old shipment.

50. The dolls are from 2 different companies. I've followed almost every piece of advice I've been told. I try to store mine in a dark cool place, in the wardrobe. I also keep one of these things that takes moisture out of the air.
I have a lot of tempermental art supplies so I'm pretty careful.

The msc looks like it goes on fine, It looked flawless. It just didn't stay on ><

I made sure my area was completely clean.

I was told to do short bursts to avoid over spraying. I used to do larger bursts but it made my nanuri head white and flakey. So I've been really watching how I spray.

Hmmm I was told to wait 24 hours after the first coating o.O for it to completely set. before re working I used a large, soft, unused paint brush to brush away any dust or particle that may have settled on (I clean my dolls this way usually).

Perhaps it could be where I get it. I know the guy I get it from had a hard time tracking it down and mentioned his buddy found a couple cases... I guess I'll try travelling to Toronto and try a can from the hobby shop there o.o

51. When I spray, I don't do it in bursts, but rather a continuous spray for a few seconds, waving the can gently from side to side to evenly coat the surface. I wait 20minutes between coats, (I've NEVER heard of 24 hours being recommended) and I've never had any issues.

Maybe give that a try?

52. Maybe the area isn't clean? What did you clean them with? I'm just thinking that if the area you were spraying may have still had some residue of what you cleaned the last sealant off with. That could be a reason why the MSC isn't holding correctly to the doll.

53. Maybe the sealant has a bad chemical reaction to the paint? Though if it's acrylic, that seems unlikely, but I am as baffled as you... I am about 10 times less picky about my spraying conditions (I even sprayed outside while it was raining yesterday >_> with testors dullcote) and I haven't had anything like this happen to me...

54. Even in the equatorial country like mine, I have to reheat the MSC in a bowl of hot water for 5 minutes to avoid whitening. But it's one continuos spray while moving the spray up and down and the head turning left to right though.

55. Yeah maybe this could be the problem. They could be bad cans. I was going to suggest that but thought "how could she get two cans from the same 'batch'?" Yeah try ordering from somewhere else. Somewhere you know they'll have new stock straight from the source. Plajapan.com, volksusa.com or hiroboy(in the uk) usually has some!

56. try running the can under hot water before you spray until the can feels room temperature-ish ? i wish i could help you more D: but that's all i got

57. Hey guys... I hope someone can help me there. I have my tan skin from planetdoll and I wanted to paint her this morning but I got a big problem. I used a new can of MSC and I sprayed too much and too close to her head. It was a mess so I cleaned her face with non-acetone nail polish remover (I tested it on her headcap before since she is tan). The MSC was extremely hard to remove, it kept staining the head white, it just would not come off.
Then I managed to get it off and I restarted to coat the head. I was real careful this time not to spray too much of too close to the head. I let her dry and then, when the MSC was dry on her face, she had white stains on her nose and corner of eyes, as if the first layer of msc was still there at some places.

Here is a pic:

Is the MSC defective ? Is there a problem with my doll ? Did I do something wrong here ?

Please help me, I am panicking !

58. That looks to me like precisely what you said, the first lot of MSC that hasn't come off properly. I have a tan limho and stripping his face is HOURS of scrubbing with alcohol to get every last bit of that pesky stuff off again, so I can sympathise with you here, but basically, unless you can track down some windsor and newton brush cleaner to use, it's your only option sadly.

59. Go out and get some Winsor & Newton brush cleaner and use that to wipe the MSC, it might still take a little scrubbing to do, but it will come off a lot easier. After than, use Dawn dish soap to wash off the entire head. Let the head air dry, then start spraying again.

With your MSC, make sure you shake it enough, otherwise it won't behave. Also, try spraying in light coat that are about 8-12 inches away from the head.

It will take time, but it will also get done.

60. Well thanks guys for the good advice ! I fixed it !!! You guys are awesome ! I really scrubbed hard though. Then I coated it again and it was fine, apart from a tiny spot on the nose, which I covered with pastels when blushing (I did not feel like srubbing AGAIN and AGAIN another time !) Anyways, she is fine now, she had a faceup ! Thanks for your help !
