Props 3D Printing MSD BJD Horse

Aug 15, 2022

    1. Hello!

As the title suggests, I'm currently in the process of printing an MSD sized BJD horse, using the stl file created my DMSTLRC on Thingiverse. As one of the comments suggested, I'm sizing it up by 362% to make it suitable for MSD sized dolls. Some day I may be brave and try SD size but I may need a bigger printer for that...:evilplot:

Anyway, the head of the horse is finished already and looks fantastic, the eyes have been modelled so they can be popped out and replaced with glass ones. Struggling to get one out but my husband has said he can heat gun it for me.

As for the quality of the print, the anatomy of the horse is fantastic so far. I know someone else in these forums has printed the horse before and had trouble with it standing so I may have to do some tweaking, but so far it's great! I'll also insert a link of the real horse I'm basing it off of, since I'm printing the head white and the rest of the body black, as well as using blue eyes to make it pop.

The horse will be the companion for my Iplehouse Vampire Claude and its name is going to be Nimue. Any advice or comments welcome!

    2. Cool! Horses are so interesting, I hope you don't have much trouble getting it to look how you want

    3. I do believe you just opened a whole new world for me. I didn't even think of printing a horse. Definitely going to look into it now. Yours looks great so far! Will definitely be checking for updates.

    4. Wow - what a complex Project! The first pictures impress! I only use a horse for "MSD" - Our Generation Horse.
An SD horse was just a dream up until now.
Good luck with the further course of the beautiful creation of a dream horse. <3 <3 <3

    5. Thanks! It's definitely going to require a lot of technical finessing but I'm excited to give it a go!

If you have access to a 3D printer I highly recommend having a go, the guy who designed the horse has made so much too, like foxes and cats and panthers, even a dragon I believe. You could have a whole menagerie, I certainly intend to

I've looked into them and they seem very popular for BJDs, I'm just so picky with movability and the general look that I knew I had to print my own, which means I'm in for a BIG project haha. But definitely think about 3D printing, it's so much cheaper now and means our bigger dolls get some love too finally! :love

    6. This is so incredible cool! I'm curious, how long had you been working with 3D printing prior to starting on a project of this scale? And like, how long does it take to print something like this from start to finish?

    7. @dolleigh basically haven't done much 3D printing at all. My husband has gone through 3 different types of machines so he's teaching me but I personally have no experience with it haha. As for time, to give you a rough idea, at MSD scale the head took 10 hours, the ear/neck joint took 9, so it's going to be a long while before the rest of it is done. Some machines print faster such as resin ones, but using a PLA printer means that the joints for the cord will be stronger and shouldn't snap/crack with the pressure like resin can do.

    8. Probably not going to update every step but since the ears finished printing and the chest is going to take 2 days, I wanted to post what the colour scheme will end up like and how it's going so far. Very excited for the end result now that more pieces are finished!

    9. Oh I am so jealous, she's looking gorgeous and the articulation will hopefully be wonderful.

    10. @Crissaegrim Thank you! I'll post again when the chest piece is done because that'll show how well the articulation actually works :) at some point I may offer to print these for people for the cost of the filament/shipping if it works out well because I want other people to have access to horses for their dolls as well.

    11. Yes, incredibly good, very successful 3D printing! <3
Or is that even resin 3D printing? It looks like this from the smooth surfaces. Very realistic head.
Yes, the "play horses" that can be bought are not the prettiest...
      Proud steed and rider
I wish you continued success with this great Project! <3 <3 <3

    12. @JL_The_Lion oh my goodness that photo is stunning! I think your doll is so beautiful as well, she makes the horse look really nice actually! To be fair it's a nicer sculpt than a lot of the horse dolls that are big enough for SD and MSD dolls, and the legs moving is a bonus!

As far as the print, it's actually PLA filament not resin, but it has printed very smoothly thankfully! You can see some lines when you feel it or look up close, but to me it kind of looks like horse hair anyway since it's all going in the right direction along the body so I don't mind. :sweat But thank you!

    13. I'd be interested to know, once you've finished, what the total cost of filament adds up to. I've been thinking about getting a 3D printer - at least maybe once the energy prices here in the UK stabilise so I can actually afford to print for multiple hours - for a number of small things but being able to print something like that would be wonderful.

    14. @Crissaegrim I'm in the UK too and I agree, the cost of energy at the minute doesn't make this type of project cheap! But once it's done I'll update the final cost of materials so hopefully that can help you decide :)

    15. A heartfelt thank you that you like the picture - my passion is to let the patient models "live" in nature. The Our Generation Horse just fits in my backpack ;-) BBE I bought used in your home on Ebay ^_^
Okay but a PLA printer but a good one and good programming! My respect.
I had purchased an MSD BJD elf in resin 3D printing from an artist 1.5 years ago. She has beautiful smooth skin without the individual layers being noticeable. But there is an undesirable side effect. I had ordered the elf in dark blue. The resin tends to produce white abrasion in the Joints. The creator said that there is a residue "ash" left by UV curing. The ash can be wiped away and should no longer appear after a while. This condition is still there after 1.5 years :-( That's why I didn't complete the BJD artistically.
But your beautiful horse's head shows that a good printer is also possible :-)
I am very excited about the finished horse - it will definitely be very beautiful and impressive! :thumbup :love

    16. I do have access to one! Two actually. one for is the plastic (I can never remember what its called) and one resin. The only problem is that i HATE the plastic one with a flaming passion. If hubby ever figures it our I will see if he would be willing to print me out a horsie. I've been working with my resin printer though so I can make some of those foxes and bunnies. and the dragon.
