She needs a name, send me ideas! Hidey ho, neighbors! I recently learned that a couple of my local libraries have 3D printers that you can have stuff printed from, all you have to do is send in an STL file and pay for the material when it's ready. So I present you the beginnings of my first 3D printed doll! I can only send in one file at a time, so I'll be updating with bits and parts as I get them. My goal with this girl is to clean her up to cast at least one copy of her myself. From there I might just work on heads to sell or maybe a smaller doll if there is enough interest. Also, I apologize for the wonky eyes (slapped on with tape) and poor harassed Nastumi (I kept stealing her wig) XD Edit: I forgot to show you guys my original rough plans! Added below :3
I want to have a 3d printer for some time, it could make some sculpting work much easier, or even represent it on the different angle. The only thing I`m worried about-will layers of plastic remain the way they are on the pic?
Yes, the layers will be there no matter how high of a resolution you print at, but I'm planning on sanding these parts and priming them so that you wouldn't even notice them. ^^
Yukiru are these parts printed in PLE or a different plastic, there may be some concerns depending on the plastic with further polishing of them. Just wondering, usually the super bright colored plastics are PLE and fairly fragile from what I remember. She looks really nice so far, I can't wait to see her done. That's so cool your library provides that!
@oakbottom Thanks! Im glad you like her! And yes, she's PLA so she will be a little hard to work with, but I made sure to make all the parts fairly thick with at least 60% infill. I'll also be wet sanding her by hand and using an auto primer/filler so that I dont completely destroy the integrity of the parts or gunk up the sand paper. But if you have any tips or tricks I'd love to hear!
@doorknob She actually wasnt too bad! I just had to pay for the materials and since I did it through my local library, they just put the total on my account. The head and head cap were printed together at medium resolution with 60% infill, which cost like $9.00 and some change, then the bust was printed with the same settings for $4.60. If I had my own printer, this would probably be a fairly expensive print and those prices would seem high, bit the fact that I dont have to set anything up, worry about the print messing up, or making the initial investment in the machine makes up for the "expensive" per part price. It's also nice that I can drive down whenever and pick the part up without paying for shipping like i would if i paid for a printing service. Definately worth looking into if your local library/community center/businesses have something like this that you can utilize :3
Her butt is here! And it's a mighty fine butt if I do say so myself X3 Howdy toonsters! I picked up the torso part for my girl today and man, am I excited! She's such a satisfying weight and size as is and, quite honestly, turning so much better than I thought she would. This girl will need a lot of work to get her to casting stage, but it'll be worth it (hahaha, I prolly won't be saying that when I'm 2 weeks into sanding and priming XD). Anywho, on to the pics! As usual, I slapped an extra pair of eyes in her and brought out Natsumi as my comparison.
Very cool. Thank you for the info. That actually sounds a lot cheaper than what I was imagining. I was imagining something more outrageous. Any how beautiful work I'll keep checking in.
She's so cute!! She's really coming along nicely And that's really cool that libraries have 3D printers for public use now... I might have to check out my local branch!
Thank you! Yah, definitely check it out! It saved me a heck of a lot of trouble, plus it's great to support the local libraries :3
Her hips don't lie! Yah, ok I'll work on my titles. But quick update for this week: this gal has hips now! The debit card reader at the library is working again, so I was able to pick up the tops of the thighs. The hip socket may need a bit of work or I might need to sand down the actual joints so that they sit in the socket properly, but we'll see. Worst case scenario, I'll just rework the joint in Blender and re print. Like I said, the joint doesn't sit all the way back in the socket in a sitting position, and I want the joint to only move on one axis and not rotate (the whole point of the swivel joint in the thigh). I also think the joint sticks out too far from the body in the front, so I may just end up reprinting anyway.
Thigh Parts Hello my dears! I took a break from printing over the holidays, but I'm back on track. Today I have the thigh parts, not big update, but it's something :3 From the get go you can see that the thighs don't fit the hip joints so well, but that's ok since I reworked the hip joints and have already sent them off to the library for printing :3 I think after this I might start printing the arms, but we'll see.
this is seriously so cool. she is turning out to be so cute! i wish i had access to a 3d printer myself.
Howdy! Wow! She looks lovely! I was considering trying to get one 3D printed based on my own design but I also want to sculpt one by hand... ah decisions decisions... Anyroad! I was curious as to how she is holding up when even partially strung. As I understand it there is quite a bit of tension there and I'm curious if you are running into any problems with the strength of the plastic etc. Sorry if it's a dumb question lol.
This is super cool! I just stumbled upon this and I'm amazed! I must check if my college has a 3d printer. Lovely body shape, have you used blender before? Or is this your adventure into 3d printing? Also, will you print more bjd's?
