3D Head

Mar 3, 2009

    1. I got her back. I put it in my blog if anyone is interested ^_^.

I hope this counts, I know a lot of people think this is cheating, but I have to say, it is a lot of work (and is going to cost a pretty penny to print)! I still have a bit of refining to do (and I have done a bit since then, the bottom picture is more recent), but she is done for the most part. I have been staring at her way too long now to judge her so I welcome as much critique as possible. Printing is going to be pretty expensive so I need to make sure she is perfect first! Something about the ears bothers me though. I made them a bit bigger on the bottom and outside since these pictures, but it still looks a little weird.

The first two are perspective and the second two are flat on.

(sorry, I don't know why the last one is so big, for some reason the medium size is the same as the large, I'll try to fix that)

And I started a second girl. Even more work to do on her, but I am happy with it so far. The smaller details like under the nose and under her lips needs a bit of work.

      Thank you very much!

    2. Wow, you're good at this!! I really admire her serene expression. She looks lovely and friendly. My only tiny critique would be that the ridge of her nose, between her eyes, could perhaps be slimmer. This might also create the impression that her eyes are wider apart.

Overall, I really admire your perserverence in perfecting your doll. She's really coming along and I hope you post more pictures in the wip section soon :)

    3. These are nice, but could maybe use more tweaking? I know what you mean staring at her for too long though. I think the bridge of the nose (between the eyes) is probably not deep enough in the profile view? Also I feel that (but this might depend on your own aesthetic opinion) the entire face in profile seems to be tilted down too much, it should be cut off and moved up and angled up more also, so that the line of the face behind the nose is more vertical.

I do like the ethnic face a lot, would like to see both of these brought further, but I guess you'd want to fiddle as much as possible virtually before you print 3D, although I believe you can sand and fix after printing too.

    4. Thank you very much! I used both of your advice. Any better? The corner of her eye bothers me a bit but I'm not sure how to fix it exactly.

And I made another girl (and changed the other.. but I think I am going to change her nose back to a little more like the other one). I know it is hard to really judge from one picture, and I'm not really done yet, but if anyone has any critique on them so far I'd love to hear it too. Oh, and I think I am going to name them (in the order in the picture) Camelia, Oriana, and Imara (which means flower, gold (because I used the golden ratio), and strong).

And yes, I am most likely going to fiddle with them quite a bit after they are printed (especially if I can't afford the better material). I can't want to print them though and actually be able to see something tangible. Thanks again ^_^.

    5. Okay, I think I am done. I want to get her printed this week, so if anyone sees anything that could be better please don't hesitate to tell me! I am going to try to fix her new jaw to be more like it was before (I changed the topology so it got weird...). I'd really appreciate more opinions! Thanks! ^_^

    6. I'm really curious to how much you will be charged for the print? If you have a small shell on it, it should be a pretty cheap print. Are they printing it in plastic or the plaster you have to cover with super glue?

    7. For the price, it is the same as it would be if it was solid, because it uses the same amount of material, the waste just gets washed away. The cheapest I found (using Xpress3D) was InterPRO. The face is and head cap are both $150 separately, but together they are only 191 (so I am guessing they have a minimum order of 150, but I think on the actual site I got quoted 180). They are about the same size (5x6x5.5cm) so each part that big costs about $90 (originally I tried RedEye and it was about $500 so $90 is sounding pretty good). And that is with PolyJet material, which is best for detail and a nice surface finish. Stereolithography is cheaper ($175 for both) and is also pretty good for detail and surface, and ZCorp is $115, but not as good for this kind of stuff. So, the price isn't that bad; not much more than what you would normally pay for a head. And at least it will be easy to mold because it is plastic so I won't have to worry about it getting ruined in the process.

The process seems to have really improved (I remember looking at it years ago). For those interested, you can see some finished products here. I'll definitely post about how it went once I have it! Oh, and here is a good link on materials.

All I have left to do is get the headcap and face to have a predefined space for the magnet (because it infuriates me when headcaps don't line up because of a magnet that isn't perfectly centered) and then off to print! I am so excited to see her in real life. If that goes well I am going to perfect my other two girls and have them printed too ^_^.

    8. oh I have just realised that you are printing this in 3d - thats amazing! I thought you were printing to paper. How interesting! So my feedback on her face, depending on the look you are looking for is that she might be a bit generic - can you make more ... details for example on her lips, so they are not so ... flat. for example, look at the lovely lips on limwha lina - all sort of juicy and plump....

    9. Ohh.. the machine at my school is ZCorp, which isn't as nice, but is almost as cheap as dirt compared to the prices you were quoted. I know a friend who works at the military that uses the PolyJet material, and it is quite amazing. I wish I could abuse his power over those machines, he prints out all of his fun stuff for free while he is on breaks.

    10. Okay, I really need an opinion pronto. I already sent the file out, but I didn't pay or confirm so there is still chance to change. I want to know which is better, and if it looks okay. Between the two, I changed the nose a lot, the upper lip and eyes a bit, and the cheeks a lot but that is hard to see.
(This one has no perspective, so it looks a bit wider than it will look in real life where there is a large change in depth. Basically, it is squished, but keeps its shading.)

Also, I know she does look very masculine. I think that is just because she is more realistic than typical dolls, so with no color and hair she looks a bit strange. My reference is definitely feminine, and she looks exactly like my reference, so I am pretty sure that will be okay, but, I would like opinions on that too because it does make me nervous (besides a body I started this is the only thing I did in 3D so I am not sure how to judge her).

      Thanks!!!!

    11. Hello!

I don't think she looks overly masculine at all... she's really lovely. One thing, about the ears in the top pictures, they seem to be placed too high... but in the bottom pictures they look fine so I don't know if it's just the effect of perspective.

It's going to be so cool to see this printed, I'm sure she'll turn out great... fingers crossed for you!
