Aesthetics 2nd bjd faceup (critique welcome!!)

Jul 12, 2018

    1. Did my second BJD faceup (although I’ve previously done 2 on Monster highs, so technically 4th) today!

I was trying to achieve something a little more realistic, but that didn’t really come through much lol. I did quite a few layers of attempted skin texturing, and it looked really nice at first but as it dried it pretty much disappeared :/ Any tips with skin texturing would be greatly appreciated! She’s supposed to have black eyeshadow instead of eyeliner, but my black pastel would NOT give any pigment for the life of it, despite layering (if you know any pastel brands that are really pigmented I’d be all ears). Eyebrows were a disaster.

Anyways, I’m pretty happy with it considering I’m still so new to this. I actually did my first/ last BJD faceup exactly a year ago today (which I find kind of funny, total coincidence) and I’ve somehow improved a bunch since that one imo!! I’ll leave a pic of that faceup too for comparison/ fun

    2. I think that the skin texture is a good start, it just needs a bit more variation in size to look realistic.
This tutorial may help: Mea's BJD Salon
I've seen other tutorials around before and I find that looking at other artists WIP are helpful as well.
More pastel blushing for some contouring may also help.

Looking at some bjd tutorials may help in other areas of doing face-ups as you'll notice that eyebrows are usually shaped with pastels and then individual hairs are drawn/painted on, and a stencil may help with keeping eyebrows shapes a bit more symmetrical.

When I need a dark eyeshadow, I shave the pastel into powder and then use a cotton bud to dab a lot of it on the eyelid, slightly smearing it and then lightly brush and clean the excess up with an kneadable eraser.
If it needs to be darker, then seal and repeat.

    3. I like it. Very edgy. However, I would recommend to not go so heavy-handed with the brows. It looks like you use paint. You either need to practice thinner lines and employ paint thinner or ditch it altogether and use pencils and make sure the ends are super sharp. Nice work on the lips tho, you stayed perfectly in lines, and was even able to put in tiny teeth!

    4. Looks very nice (/*3*)/ The only thing thats really noticeable that could be improved would be the eyebrows, maybe try to get them more symmetrical as mentioned.

    5. I can definitely see improvement as well!

I would say, try to be lighter on the eyebrows, with thinner strokes like hairs in eyebrows. For the black eyeshadow, are you using artist-grade pastels like Rembrandt or Schmincke, or student grade (which are cheaper and less pigmented)? That may be why it wasn't working. I really like the lips you did though!

    6. It's getting better!
I think that it needs a little more bit of work, since the eybrows and the lips are not perfectly executed. The eyebrows are little bit weird but it could be a style, it could be a little more realistic. You should try to draw it down before doing it.
I can't wait to sse the following! ♥

    7. You’re so far getting better after each faceup! The eyes however seem a bit dry looking to me (I don’t know how to explain it but something is a little off to me). The rest however is pretty nice, especially for a 2nd face up, keep it up ;)
