Aesthetics 2nd and 3rd Faceups

Oct 1, 2016

    1. Hi all! Here are my latest faceups, and I'd really love some critiquing on what I could do to make them a bit better. I ended up wiping the more gothic looking one here because I decided I wanted a softer look for Thanatos's character, but I'd like views on both. Thanks for looking! :blush

2nd faceup. (Sorry for the terrible camera quality.)

3rd faceup. (His eyelinder went bumpy because of my shaky hands. >.< His eyebrows also went uneven, but I kind of like it.)

    2. I like the lips on the 2nd (technically 3rd) face up. But to me, the eyelashes seem really long. You make the eyebrows pretty even, nice job! (That's my weakness!)

    3. I like the look, especially the veining running from the corner of the eye down to the mouth!

    4. My honey mentioned the eyelashes last night as well. In all honesty the first couple lashes ended up too long, but instead of backtracking I just rolled with it and did the rest the same way. XD The lashes will take some practice. Thank you!

      Thank you! ^-^

    5. @Little Lu,

What materials did you use for the eyebrow hairs/eyelashes? While the eyelashes are nice and long, they do look a a bit gritty, and perhaps a little thick (using paint would help make them not gritty, or making sure to have sharp-but-not-too-sharp pencils if you're using watercolor pencils, and give them multiple layers). And the eyebrow hairs are a bit stubby and sparse-looking. A trick with eyebrow hairs is, to draw them a little more angled, rather than going at a perpendicular angle to the eyebrow base. I can see that you did that a bit, but I think you could've done it a bit more even, to give the hairs some more length there, without them going way up onto the forehead, but still not look stubby. :3

I do really like the blushing colors you chose on the last one, particularly for his lips! Though I do feel like he could've used just a bit more blushing on the outer upper corners of his eyes, since the inside corners of his eyes look to have a different saturation level than the outside.

But all in all, I can definitely see your progress! :D Keep up the good work!

    6. I used watercolor pencils for both, which is why it looks a bit gritty and blocky at some spots. With his wig on he looks a bit better. XD

I am not quite skilled enough to have a steady hand when using a thin brush for eyelashes, so pencil it was--at least until I have more practice. :) The brows could have been a bit thicker and longer, I agree. In natural light the inner corners of his eyes are a lot more vivid, which makes him look a little strange, but it's definitely a step up from the first faceup I ever did. XD

And thank you for the tips! Makes me excited to keep practicing. :D

    7. Watercolor pencils are great too! :) One of my faceups with my finest, thinnest, wispiest eyebrows was with a Derwent pencil. :) I think it's just a matter of making sure your pencil is sharp, but not too sharp. Also, making sure your sealant has given it a fine layer. If your sealant is thick, it can cause the surface you are working on to start out a little gritty, which can make the pencils look more gritty as well. :)
