2017 PNW BJD Expo "Myths & Legends" retreat May 18-20

Dec 19, 2016

    1. The list of vendors is up! So excited for everything that's planned for the 6th annual Expo in 2017.
If you want to be a vendor there is still time to sign up ;)

    2. I had a blast last year! Originally I didn't plan to go in 2017 (lifetime changes and all...), but it looks like I might be able to make it after all. :D

    3. That's great news that you might be able to make it, Praesagium.

    4. Registration has started! One day and full weekend passes are available.

    5. Just to clarify, does the "full Registration" include the "Farewell Dinner," or would it need to be added on separately? I see "final dinner" listed in the "Full Registration" package, but since the wording is different, I want to be sure I'm not missing the "Farewell Dinner" if I do the "Full Registration."

Also, under contests, for the diorama contest, it says, "Dioramas may not exceed 3 in width, depth or height." Is that 3 feet?

    6. Yes, the Farewell Dinner is included with Full Registration. It's also available as an add on for those only registering for one day.

For the diorama contest. Yes, 3 feet ;)

    7. I am very excited to attend again this year with my sister. Are the number of contestants for the diorama limited?

    8. @jhiggi, the space set aside for the dioramas is generous enough to allow ample competition ;)

      @Kiyakotari, your welcome.

    9. Thanks, "let the games begin" :)

    10. I just signed up for the early-bird registration. I'm so excited to attend and this years theme is definitely a fun one.

    11. Now that we're this side of the new year, I'm getting very excited!! @jyrus Do you know when the rest of the competition rules will be posted? Specifically the costume contest?

    12. I just found out I can take my vacation days that week and I'm so excited for this retreat! I've never been to a BJD Con before and I've never been to Seattle before (I'm a NYer). I can't wait until May :D:dance

    13. If you need some recommendations on where to stay and where to eat, I'd be happy to refer you to several restaurants and tourist-friendly spots or cafes ^^~

    14. @Piko I'd love some recommendations! I've never been to Seattle before either, and I bet there are others of us as well that would appreciate a few hints on where to go!

    15. @Ellidyr sounds great! If you want to try a famous sushi place (ever heard of Jiro Dreams of Sushi? he's a famous Japanese sushi chef who made many documentaries) stop by SHIRO'S. Pricey but delicious and worth the experience. <3

Additionally, try eating around Pike's Place (marketplace/street by the ocean! super pretty), I'll list a few local favs that are also near the convention center~

      โ˜† Palomino's (Classic American)
โ˜† Wild Rye (gluten free sandwiches)
โ˜† Pike Place Chowder (Touristy & friendly)
โ˜† Sushi Kudasai (farther from convention center, but a nice walk, close to waterfront)
โ˜† La Creperie Voila (straight-up delicious)

I hope these were helpful! And I hope you enjoy your stay! There are also a lot of brunch-y places so maybe don't purchase a continental breakfast at your hotel! You may find a better and more delicious deal/meal elsewhere~

    16. @Piko Wonderful advice! Thanks a lot- I look forward to all the sushi!!

    17. Contest rules will be finalized soon. :dance

    18. Yes. That would be helpful to me as well. Thanks.

It looks like I'm going! I've never been to a BJD convention before. I've been in this hobby for 5 years now. My friend, who lives nearby, my husband and myself will drive up there from Portland (where we live). So I will go to their website and read all their rules. I want to bring a couple of dolls with me.

    19. There are plenty of chain hotels like hiltons and Marriotts in the area that would probably fit your needs. I'd reccomend pike place as well, there's a huge variety of choices and you can do some local shopping while you're there. I also have to reccomend Ivar's fish and chips, and Dicks burgers, a couple of fast food staples here in the area. Some might be a little farther out but the closest ivars is right on the waterfront, by the aquarium. Not sure how accessible it's going to be, there's been a lot of construction down there lately as they're building a new sea wall. There are tons of little family-owned joints all over as well, a lot of them being Mediterranean or Indian. If you want a real treat, I highly suggest Kau Kau in Chinatown. Get the duck if you can!

    20. @Ellidyr Contest rules are posted for all contests now

And Kaye Wiggs is doing the convention doll this year!

    21. Kaye is creating an industry first 14" mini BJD for this convention. Her name is Laryssa and she is a fawn doll to celebrate the native history of the area.

    22. About Uncanny Dreams. That is a typo and it is being redone to say that there is NO size limit on the diorama, but space is limited, so if you want to enter, get your application in fast. We have cash awards for the winners and would love to see the artistry of the bjd world in person!!

    23. The diorama contest is open to entries of any size, but the space may fill up. You can sign up for the contest online.

    24. all of the contest rules are posted.

    25. the entry form links don't appear to be working :/

    26. I will look in to that right now! Thanks for letting me know

    27. All corrected, thanks for letting me know.

    28. Hmmmm, when I click the links nothing happens, and if I open it in a new tab, its blank...

    29. I know when I click on it with my phone it directs me to my email. I don't know if that helps. ^_^

    30. Well I booked my room with my sister and paid off the balance for the convention and finally figured out how to enter the contests, although I am still deciding on certain entries as I have several in the works and will need to narrow it down. What is the deadline for entering the contests or is there one besides the photo contest?

    31. Hi, the deadline on the contests is May 1, except the photo contest.

    32. Hi, I am using Chrome as my browser and am not able to re-create either problem. I also tried my phone and that is working correctly also. If I can't get this resolved for you, I would be happy to send whatever info you would like to see via email.

    33. Hmm that's so strange! I'm also using Chrome.... but that's ok- I got it to work on my phone :)

    34. Have you looked at the contests for the PNW BJD Expo this year? We are excited to have a Photo contest that is available to anyone, anywhere in the world to enter. Cash prizes and bonus accolades! Sharon, editor of The STAND, Lookbook will be choosing the top winners. The winning photos will be displayed at the PNW BJD EXPO May 18-20, 2017 AND will be included in the July issue of The STAND.
It is super easy to enter and YOU could be a winner, click the photo below for more info.

    35. Just an FYI, Dust of Dolls will be bringing special dolls for the convention. If you have ever wished to go to Lyon to see them, now you can meet them and buy a special doll! There is a new face for the large Doom body and new faces for the smaller dolls too!

    36. Also, about Uncanny Dreams, your diorama does not have to follow the show theme. So let your imagination run wild.

    37. Time is running our to order the fabulous doll that Kaye Wiggs, an exclusive for the PNW BJD Expo. You won't be able to order this doll after March 15. She is a super cute 14" fawn doll. I plan to find just the right tree as a prop to go with her in my 'special doll' case.
For info and ordering, click here.

    38. I can't wait! I think I'm only bringing three dolls this year, counting contest entries. I think my Trinity is staying home... don't really feel like pushing the stroller!

    39. I signed up for contests earlier and now I notice there is an entry fee. How exactly will that work? Will we be billed or do we have to sign up again? I already received confirmation emails.

    40. Hi, you will be billed for the contest entry in late-April.

    41. Where does it say there will be an entry fee? Is it the same for all the contests?

    42. Initially the sign up for the contests had no fees, when I went back on the website to look at updated rules for the contests there were fees posted. Like I said, I had already received confirmation letters for entry with no mention of entry fees. It seems like bait and switch to me, but since I've been working on my entries for quite some time I will reluctantly pay them, I enjoy the contests and don't mind paying for them I just don't like it when things get changed on the fly with no personal update sent to me.
Did this happen to anyone else?

    43. Ouch
Ouch - The fee was on the website from the very beginning - IF you booked through the Contest Rules and Entry Page ... my mistake and apology is for not putting it on the landing page where there is a sign-up link as well. Bad form on my part.

    44. A lot of really great things are shaping up for the PNW BJD Expo - lots to post, but want to post with a special announcement from Dust of Dolls. Nyo and Lyly have created Bomi, with an original faceup by Nyo for the show. She will be raffled, with the winner announced at the banquet on Saturday evening. Wow, here is your chance to win a Dust of Dolls creation for the price of a raffle ticket. This special offer is for attendees, so take a look at signing for all or part of the event!

    51. I'm local but wasn't sure if I'd be able to attend. Everything's looking clear for Saturday, though! I've attended the last few years, but a couple questions anyway:

      1. At this point, would there be any advantage to me registering online instead of at the door for Saturday-only if I don't intend to enter any contests or workshops?

      2. There's a BJD Swap-only meet on Saturday - would I be welcome to bring along items that are not BJD but listed on the "About" page or similar such as Monster High dolls? Not that I'm looking to score big trading them off, but I have an overgrown dolly stash I'll never get to using and wouldn't mind moving on to fellow hobbyists. (I will hand out Liv heads like candy.)

    52. Me too, my birthday is the 21st. Happy birthday to you and hope to meet you there.

    53. My sister made the Dryad and the photograph. She is very talented and I am so proud of her. I drug her along with me to her 1st convention last year and we had a great time. It's fun playing dolls together at every age. :) She's collected dolls her whole life and now it's BJD's.

    54. Hi and thanks for the not. If you want to just come to the salesroom on Saturday, there is no advantage unless you want to attend the Farewell Dinner.

The Swap is a no-cash event ... truly a swap. You are welcome to join

    55. LOVED her entry!

    56. More clues to the treasure to be found at the PNW BJD Expo this coming week. www.pnwbjdexpo.com for more info
