Contest 2010 T-shirt Design (Art and Design Contest)

Jun 24, 2010

    1. 2010 T-Shirt Design

      Description
This year's themes are based around the idea of our dolls as being extensions of our own personalities, interests, or sense of beauty. The themes for this summer's two photo contests are "Almost Human" and "Almost Doll"; for this contest, we are asking you to create a t-shirt design based on one of these themes.

The interpretation is up to you! You may create your image digitally or using traditional media.

      Entry Details

      Who May Enter?
This contest is open to all members who do not currently have any unresolved transactions or other disciplinary measures in place. Members must have jointed the forum before June 25th, 2010.

The contest is also open to all forum staff.

      Specifications

Each member may submit up to TWO entries, but may only win one prize.

Drawings must be sent in JPEG format, 600 pixels on the longest side. Oversized images or images sent in the wrong format will be disqualified. The winner will need to send a 300+ DPI version of the image in PNG or JPEG format suitable for printing. If you cannot provide a high resolution version, please do not enter.

Designs must include the forum's name and URL.

By entering this contest, you acknowledge that the image will be used by Den of Angels for our 2010 t-shirt, which will be sold through Cafepress to help pay for our hosting costs. The winning image becomes the property of Den of Angels, though we will ask for your express written permission if we decide that we want to use it for anything else. (Non-winning images remain the sole property of the artist, though we ask that any design aspects that specifically mention Den of Angels be removed before using the image for other purposes).

Entries will be accepted from 12:01am EST July 1st to 11:00pm EST July 31st. Entries received after this time will be disregarded; if you do not know what time this is where you are, please consult a time zone converter website.

Entries will be submitted directly to the moderators using this form!
Do not PM Truffle or any of the other moderators with your entry; this form is the only way to enter.

DO NOT POST YOUR ENTRY ELSEWHERE.

If you are not interested in the top prize, please indicate this on your entry form. Do not accept the prize if you do not intend to keep it; it is unsportsmanlike to sell the prize after receiving it and anyone found doing this will receive a Marketplace suspension and be barred from future contests.

      Voting

Entries will be posted for member voting from August 16th-August 22nd. Votes will be submitted and tallied privately using a new feature in the forum software. The totals will be made available on completion of voting.

Entries will be posted without the entrants' names to try to avoid this being a popularity contest. For this reason, we must stress that identifying your entry to others (such as by posting it on Deviantart or a personal website prior to close of voting) will lead to disqualification.

      Prizes
The first prize for this contest will be an adorable Fairy of Fairytales Naomi donated by Peakswoods! Fairies of Fairytales are tiny dolls that are around 26cm tall. (Please note that while Naomi is tan skin on Peakswood's teaser photos, the winner will receive a normal skin version.)

Check out more pictures of Naomi and Peakswoods' other dolls on their official website!

The second prize will be a small surprise bag of doll-related items, such as eyes, wigs, shoes, etc. Because of the surprise nature, it's okay if you sell or trade items that you can't use.

The third prize will be a treat of your choice from Have it Sweet, an excellent little candy shop! (Their Fleur de Sel caramels are to die for. Seriously, aim for third!)

    2. This may be a dumb question, but are the t-shirts being printed in 1 color or four (full) color?

    3. T-shirts are being printed in four color. Thanks!

    4. This may be a foolish question but I'll ask before someone else has to :). It says "art and design" in the title but then specifically mentions photos.

Is the contest photography only? Or can it also be artwork?

      I know.. sorry... *meep*

    5. Sorry, it should be drawing. I must have copied and pasted the wrong section! Edited. :)

    6. This means two entries per contest, correct?

    7. Yes. Each set of rules pertains to that contest specifically.

    8. When it says the forum name and url, can it be like last year's old DoA tee-shirt design that says "Den of Angels .com"?
Or does it have to be Den of Angels and the url (including the /forums part in the url)?

    9. Nope, 'DenofAngels.com' is fine!

    10. What size do you want for the pictures? Is just 600 pixels on the longest part the only specification? Or do you have a height limit too?

    11. 600 on the longest size - so it can either be a maximum of 600 wide or 600 tall. The other measurement, obviously, must be 600 or less.

    12. Will the pictures be automatically printed on the center of the shirt, or can we choose where the design will go? Thanks for hosting yet another wonderful set of contests!

    13. The picture will be printed in the center of the shirt. Thanks for your interest in the contests!

    14. Can there be a design for the reverse of the shirt as well or is it strictly the front? =)

    15. The picture can only be for one side of the shirt, whether front or back.

    16. Naomi is adoreable! does she come with the kitty ears for the prize? I will definately be entering this contest!

    17. I can't say for certain, but as the ears come with the doll default, I think they'll be included with the prize Naomi. :)

    18. this looks soo cool! Has this competition been run before? If so, is there somewhere we can see the entries for ideas? Does it need to be a more basic design (like, basic colour area/shapes) or can it be more complex (like, think an art-print tee)? (Yes, I ask vague annoying questions)

I can't wait to enter - Naomi is adorable!

    19. Previously, we have not held tshirt design competitions. However, we have offered DoA tshirts in the past (have a look in the rest of this subforum and you can easily find the two designs from last year.)

Your design is up to you, however, please keep in mind that this is a 2010 logo tshirt for DoA; make it something eye catching and suitable for a tshirt, rather than something that may be a gorgeous piece of art, but not really suited to the medium. ;)

    20. Thanks for organising this event :) Sounds like fun!

Can I send the same entry on two different background colours?

    21. So by 4-color printing you just mean CMYK, right? So there can be blending and stuff? (Not just 4 solid colors?)
Aaaand what T-shirt color should we design for? Will they just be white, or just black, or both, or will it be available in multiple colors?

    22. I'm pretty terrible at drawing, can I have my sister re-draw my design before I submit it? She has no interest in these Dolls but she agreed to help if it wasn't against the rules... (I think she just wants the anatomy practice)

    23. It says 300+ dpi, but is there a preferred dpi? Like, is 300 itself is fine but there is a higher one that would be preferable?

    24. We would consider that a duplicate, rather than a new entry... so if you want to make two entries, it might be better to do two completely different designs.

We will need the final version on a transparent background (or we will make a transparent background ourselves if needed) , so it doesn't really matter what background you demonstrate it on.

We weren't actually getting that specific. It's color, rather than black and white or one color. :)

The best design would work for either. Black t-shirts are popular, but they cost more to print... so we'll also want to offer white t-shirts that are a little more affordable.

The entry should be by you.

300 is the minimum. we'll take as high as you want to go.

    25. hanks for organising this event Sounds like fun!

    26. Oh goodness more contests *stares* I'll have to see what I can come up with again.

Thanks again to all the mods that are organizing all of this again! *is getting excited again* ^^

    27. I was wondering, are we permitted to enter as many of the contests as we can, and still be in with a fair chance of winning?

And thanks so much for holding these! This is my first year on the forum and I can't wait to get stuck in >:D!

    28. Is the prize a full set?
As while I love the Doll and her outfit and the ears.... I dislike the Wig. And you have said no reselling of the prize... would this inculde things like the wig? since I hate leaving unused things like wigs around...

    29. As far as I know, it's a blank doll.

Immie, you can enter all contests if you wish.

    30. ok thank you.

    31. Ooooh, I want to joiiiin! 8D Does it matter if you don't live in the US?

    32. Any qualified member (good standing in the community, no MP ban, etc) may participate.

    33. Thank you. (:

    34. I have a question... If done digital, would you prefer vectors or are bit maps just fine?

    35. I was wondering when you say color, does it mean that the number of colors we use is unlimited? also are shadings allowed or does it have to be solid colors?
      Thank you ^^

    36. Does this have a specific art technique needed? Painterly, graphic, vector?

    37. hi,

should i make the picture/design on a t-shirt template or just make the design for the front and back og the t-shirt?
can i make a black/white version and a color version, or am I only allowed to make color versions?

    38. @_@ such a beauty

    39. HELP! I tryed to upload a PNG picture size 600x600 px and DoA upload it much smaller ): and i don`t know why

    40. The picture has to be JPG format, please resubmit it. :) (We only want the full-sized PNG if you win.)

    41. thank you so much i was so confused about that :D

    42. Hello, how are we supposed to give the url to the image if we can not upload it to any other sites? Are we supposed to use a hosting site?

    43. Quick question. Do you have to be able to access Market Place to enter?

    44. pinkninjastar: I imagine you can upload it to photobucket or http://tinypic.com or something similar, as long as the album is on private settings that the public can't see. =)

    45. The info says to focus on one of the two themes; does this mean we shouldn't submit something that has both themes?

    46. Ffffffffffffffffffffffff... I need to get off my lazy butt and draw something for this! :doh

    47. I totally agree - I was like "Oh, that will be awesome" and then I look at the date and am like UUUGGGGGG I have three different comps I want to enter, and have done no work on any of them!! (Well, I have ideas, but no physical work done lol)

    48. Would it be alright to submit two versions of a design to accommodate both a black and a white t-shirt? i.e. a light colored text version for a black shirt and a dark colored text version for white? Not with the intent of them counting as separate entries, but rather to ensure both options are viable for print at the end of the contest. Alternately would it be sufficient to state that there is a version intended for use on a dark/light background in the comments?

    49. stupid quition but what IS PNG?

    50. Are we allowed to submit these of T-Shirt templates, for like positioning and so on? Also, can we design both front and back of the shirt, or are we only to be designing the main design? Sorry if this was asked before.

    51. It was already mentioned that two entries of the same image (even on different backgrounds) would be considered duplicates, and would count as your second design. Best thing to do would be to make it so it works for both (like, if your image is outlined in black, put a white border around it. That way it'll also work on white. Kinda like the one at the bottom of the first post in this thread)

PNG stands for Portable Network Graphic(s). In short, it's a graphics file type (like a GIF, only better).

It was mentioned before that the design will be printed in the middle of the shirt, and your design must be for either front or back (not both).

    52. Does Naomi come with Faceup or blank?

      I'm totally entering.

    53. SO entering this! I cant wait to get started! I love the prize so much she is adorable!!!

    54. Some of the entries have been very nice, but they haven't really seemed like t-shirt designs.

Please keep in mind that these aren't just pretty pictures, they are going to be on a t-shirt. Work at having a strong design... and before you submit your entry, ask yourself "Would I wear this?" :)

    55. Thanks for making me even more insecure about my entries armeleia xD

    56. Lol, just try hard and think about wearability. You'll be fine! ;)

    57. Now I am worried - my design that I have *almost* finished is very t-shirty. I worry that people will just vote for the prettiest picture and not think about the fact it is a tshirt design.......

    58. Oh wow!! I can't wait to see all the entries for this....(I admit, I've been lurking for quite awhile, I'd like to start getting more involved with DOA!!)
What the heck, I'll give it a go...I have a little angel here, who would LOVE to be a model for this!! PS Happy 6th Anniversary, DOA!! :D

    59. That's my worry as well. XD I really think that there's no way to prevent it, though. :/ I've been in several contests like this before, and people tend to vote for the one that catches their eye rather than imagining it on a shirt. I guess we'll just have to see how it goes, and hope, ne?

    60. Will you let us know if the url doesn't work? *paranoid*

I'd hate to not be in the contest just because of my own dumb technical error! :doh
