OT/General 1/4 and 1/6 scale doll head and feet sizes?

Feb 5, 2012

    1. I was just thinking about the possibility of my doll being able to wear other companies shoes, wigs, and head pieces, but I then realized that my doll sculpt is smack-dab in the 1/5 scale area :pout. Most (if not all) bjd companies carry items for 1/6 and 1/4 scale dolls, not 1/5 scale.

Since I have not sculpted the feet or the head yet, I thought I might be able to get away with up/down scaling those pieces.

Does anyone have some good reference sizes for 1/6 and 1/4 bjd heads and feet? Like the average length and width? I know it's possible to just measure my own head and feet, and then convert it to scale, but I honestly don't know if bjds often exaggerate some of the features or not.

Thank you in advanced for any help.

    2. Not gonna do the legwork for you, but how about you browse around on some company websites and look at measurements there (fairyland and iplehouse, for example) and compare them to yours. Chances are you could even shorten or lengthen your doll to suit the more standardised sizes if you don't want to end up with an odd size.

I'd say the proportions are very likely exaggerated and not merely scaled down from human measurements so you'd be best off to compare with a few different doll types to get the best sort of idea.

    3. Thanks for the quick reply.

I have looked quite a bit for measurements.
Looking back on it I should have included that in my first post. Apologies :o

The measurements that I found seemed to vary, and I was curious if there was some type of "standard" size.

If there is no such thing, I'll decide which size best fits my doll.

      Thank you again.

    4. I think the measurements will vary a little from one company to the next, there is no one standard, head sizes will definitely vary and proportions as well. Maybe take an average, or pick one company's measurements to follow, or like you say just decide for yourself.

    5. 1/4 scale dolls tend to have proportionately large heads, while 1/6 scale dolls tend to have realistically proportioned heads. I think you're better off making your doll's head the right size for your doll -- wigs do come in all sizes. Shoes are likely to be more of a problem, but you may be able to get some fashion doll shoes to fit -- as I recall, there are some 16" fashion dolls whose shoes are definitely too small for 1/4 scale BJDs. Take a look here: http://www.facetsbymarcia.com/shoes.htm

    6. To answer your original question-

1/6 dolls have 6-7" wig size, and 3.7cm or so size feet.
1/4 dolls have 7/8" wig size, and 5.5-6cm size feet.

That said, there are some dolls on the market that are between the common sizes. Minoru World, Custom House, Narsha... I think there's more. Worth a little research.

    7. As a matter of reference, feet are about as long as heads are tall, and feet-head ratio get smaller as the "look" gets younger. So consider age, proportion...?
