O no it's me again...i have lost count of the number of heads i've started and eventually thrown out as failiures. This one has got as far as any i have done before. I'm not giving this one a name or a number either. I've had more advice from my brother anatomy wise (he's also going to cast me a head eventually, some advice from other people like: make the head part to fit a body i already had so the proportion would be better and the neck edge would be something to build on. Please ignore the date on the photos, my camera finally gave up the ghost and i had to borrow my dads. This morning after last nights sanding; After this mornings sanding; The white is milliput that i built the head with and the grey is spray on primer. Can you tell that i'm right handed? XD the left side is pretty well smooth but the right is so damn bumpy >< *hides the horrendous ears* I think people had seen enough of the way i work before now so i never posted any pictures of that stage. Polystyrene balls for the win! I fixed the lip part on his right and also changed the shape of the eyes and worked REALLY hard to get his ears even and smooth. todays pics: picture update. I'm beginning to think he looks like an ancient egyptian...kinda tutankhamun features from the funarary mask XD Still so much work to do *sigh* made the last pic b&w so you can see roughly how i do the proportions. the red arrows show where i placed the ear wrongly and the gap is narrower on the left. baking process pictures; the tray this time included hooves and various other bits and bobs for this guy as well as a few commish pieces that i will cast in resin. I also used up some fimo and sculpey from my last attempts in sculpting, i made a pair of arms and a foot. They need to be trimmed down and shaped, the arms cut and jointed and totally sanded down to fit hand joints and shoulders. slightly closer; 22/01/09 More pictures of baking etc @_@, sorry i'm not more original! The arms cut and ready for measuring and altering. They were too short so i had to add and smooth out. Added some sculpey to reshape and make the measurement up. Baked a foot and shaping it with the craft knife.
aw thank you so much, he's a bigger improvemement on my last head, i've come quite a way since then! It was tough. I fixed the lip part on his right and also changed the shape of the eyes and worked REALLY hard to get his ears even and smooth.
I really like this face, the nose is especially well done. my only problem though (i hope you dont mind my saying) ,the eyes are quite big, even for a doll. keep it up
Are you still going to add an upper eyelid, or are you going for a completely open-eye look? I think adding at least a strip of lid on the top of the eye would help, because right now the eyes are a bit too large Again, if this is what you're going for, nevermind me Otherwise I think you're doing great!
thanks all. The ears were VERY difficult, i had to sit with a row of dollies in front of me while i made them. i haven't got the detail of some of the company ears and i think i sanded them too thin as well. Today i made the eyes less wide and worked on an eyelid on both of them, reshaped them both slightly as well. Fixed a crack underneath where the slot is for the s-hook, sanded like crazy today and after all that, part of the lip is still wrong and so is the chin.... Darn, and i need to take photos as well of todays work! To fix: Lips Chin Ears
ah yes, the details of the ears are very hard to sculpt..x_x that's why i go for simple and nice ears thou i do love to sculpt detailed ears but I failed..D: have to keep trying on~
I thought that before I read your comments! Like the faces in the Metropolitan Museum of Art Egyptian section (I'm in that region). I think the outermost points of his eyes are too far from the nose for a realistic look, but they work with the mostly planar cheekbones. If your doll's face were more rounded, I would find such wide-spreading eyes disconcerting. Ann in CT
thank you hun i shall take a look in the morning when the light is better and i will probably draw on where i need to attack with the knife!
added a proportion picture to the top post. moved all the pictures to the top post for ease of browsing.
OMG what have i done . . . I just went and ordered the mold making compunds, resin dyes and the resin! I should be casting by the end of the week!!! Then the REAL work begins! I've also been busy on two kinds of sd hands, some msd hooves and a unicorn horn
Real people's ears are attached so the top attached part is level with the eyes, and the bottom is down by the jaw. Look at anyone you know with glasses--the temple pieces are pretty much level with the ground. Ann in CT
Yeah, i was too enthusiastic when sanding and they came down far too much now you mention it. I've adjusted with a roll of miliput to make it more in proportion, not to mention it was far too thin in width. Do you also think it may be the angle i take the photos?
Baking pictures added for todays offerings. I haven't worked on the head for a couple of days at the mo, decided to start on other things as a break so i can look at it with fresh eyes.
I think it's looking good, do you have a sketch we could see to get a better idea where you are going with your doll? If not, I'll just use my imagination!
i did do a body plan for it. With the head it's just how i feel at the time. I really really should do someting like that...give more of a direction for people. Roughly: 70ish cm male doll that is fairly solid head: no idea...he seems to want to be egyptian looking all by himself XD
