I recently ordered a Miracle Doll Dio who comes with a weasel head. I want to get him a human head to switch to, and I seem to have settled on the look of Dollzone's Gray (I've been told it's a great resin match, and I adore the sculpt). But since I don't have a doll yet (I'm still waiting for my first, Dio was an "oopsies if I don't take this opportunity I'm going to regret it the rest of my life" kinda thing), I can't really visualize things very well. My worry is that Gray's head is for a 62cm doll, and Dio is only 43cm. It's even more difficult because Dio isn't a "normal" MSD size, he's got different proportions due to his animal nature. And. I'm not sure if he'll end up looking bobble headed. I know that Dio just came out, so I can't ask anyone to swap heads and give me pictures of Gray's head on Dio's body or something similar. But I'm hoping maybe I can get the next best thing. When working with hybrids, what are the proportions to look at with regards to heads looking "right"? Is head circumference and shoulder width the most important? Dio's head is 24cm circumference, with a neck circumference of 10.5 his shoulders are 11.5cm Gray's head is 20.5cm, neck 9.3cm and shoulders are 11cm I know that Dio's head (may??? It doesn't specify) includes his ears, but here in my inexperience it seems like Gray might not look too wonky on his body. I don't mind slightly oversized (some people could argue that the head Dio already has is slightly oversized!), I just don't want him to look ridiculous xD Does anyone have a head around 20.5 cm they can stick on a body with shoulders roughly 11.5cm so I can see if it looks okay?
Dio seems to be sized like a 1/3 doll, just shorter, so it's very possible that Gray might fit on the body (though, you might need to widen Gray's neckhole since it's smaller than Dio's neck). But, his head might be kind of long looking for it. Going by Dio's shoulders, they're a similar size to a lot of 1/3 girl bodies (and Gray's are too, apparently). A lot of 1/4 size dolls have shoulders under 10cm. I was going to show pics of 1/3 heads on 1/4 bodies, but I'm not sure it'd actually help in this case since Dio's measurements are more similar to a 1/3 doll, aside from his height. He's an oddly proportioned guy, but he is very cool looking. Also keep in mind that a wig, if you use one for Gray, will make his head look larger (sometimes a lot larger if it's a really thick wig lol). But, to answer your question about hybrids, I find it's a combination of head circumference and length (top of head to chin) plus shoulder width. Neck circumference and length are also important, but can be easier mods if you have the tools for it (dremel/sandpaper for shortening/thinning or epoxy or lengething/widening).
I was anticipating needing to widen the neck hole if I did end up going with Gray, yes. But that seems to be an issue no matter what human head I'd go with. That does explain quite a bit of my confusion, thank you! Looking at all the 1/4 sized heads, and their neck holes being drastically smaller than Dio's neck stem. But him being 1/3 sized but just wonky because of his proportions makes a lot of sense xD The haunches/legs are the best part for me, so I'm willing to deal with some oddities to get...him lol. Hmmmmmmmm oh yes, that does bring up another worry I hadn't thought of. I've been looking for more adult-looking sculpts because his character is an adult, but if the head looks weirdly long/tall on his body that won't do at all. Especially because he'll have a wig. I might try some crummy photoshop copy-paste to stick Gray's head on the body (with a wig too) to see if the longness is too off. And ye, pictures of 1/3 heads on 1/4 bodies probably wouldn't work in this case then, thank you for considering. That makes a lot of sense, thank you! I hadn't considered length until you mentioned it. And sadly I can't recall any listings where they actually tell me what the head length is. Hmmmm. I might end up going for a more compressed teen/preteen head instead and maybe just narrowing the cheeks to make him look more adult....though the thought of modding that much has me quaking in my boots. A little sanding on the inside of the neck hole seems much less intimidating xD Lots of things to consider, thank you very much! xD
I also think it will not work proportionally, but just remember faceup can change everything! You can make a sculpt look more mature with the right painting techniques, so don't feel too discouraged about having to use a different sculpt.
I did have a sculpt I really liked that I felt was just too young looking for him. But I'd forgotten about how much a faceup can change things, yes! I think that might have been a 1/4 sculpt tho. Hmmmmm I'll have to dig further XD thank you for the words of encouragement, I'll get the perfect one settled on eventually hehehe!
