☆~~ Granado Doll Discussion Part 12 ~~☆

Oct 30, 2015

    1. So many great pictures! I need to see more of the guy with the animal (cat?) ears. I wish it said who they belonged to. I'll have to hunt on Flickr.

    2. Yeah, I liked that one too, and I hadn't seen him around anywhere!

    3. WOW! Just, wow! Yeah, I haven't seen a LOT of those dolls out there. But then, I don't really get around much. :sweat

I see fishcakes girl and man! (Still love that black and white wig!) What a cool halo for the girl! Neat effect!
Quiet and Insane's mad scientist! What a great shot of his singed sleeve and hand! And he's back at it again - hopefully he won't burn the other arm this time!
Snowy, love the yin and yang background to the boys! That's so perfect!
I see our vampire Mads at the bottom, in his finery!
Is that april's Charles in the fancy linen jacket and hat?

I love that Granado pirate flag! That's so cooooool!

I always have fun doing this, but boy am I completely outclassed you you all! :aheartbea
So, so, SO many lovely dolls, and I want to pick up and fondle them all! So many handsome men! *swoon*
It's like Christmas, getting to see all the dolls come out to play!!! *happy dance*

    4. I want more pix of Iwan at work.. I think ;)
@aernath is that your guy in the woods with a guitar over his shoulder? That one is so atmospheric, I like it a lot. I also like ATYL's paparazzi pix of Venus--I sort of expect her to reach out and say "No pictures!" And I wonder how that fancy ..Assassin's Creeds? armor was made! So many tiny details!

    5. The third place winner in the photo contest, does he have the bronze skin tone or the tan skin tone?

Another question: how frequently does Granado re-offer sold out models for purchase, like they're doing right now for their 5th anniversary event?

    6. I have no idea on the resin color, but Granado seems to re-offer sold out models once or twice a year. It's kind of random, though!

    7. That GUITAR! If that guy belongs to any of you guys, where on earth did you get that? :D

Wonderful eye-candy, that whole thing. I might join in next year when I've got my photostory sets ... pretty sure I can do something with Carlos (Uranus) then :)

    8. Wowies.0o0 All those incredible pics!

Among the three winners I have to admit that 2nd place is my personal favourite. It looks dynamic and I at first thought the pic of some sort of model or something had somehow gotten mixed up with the pics or advertisment layering over part of the winners :3

And dat body... Only realized afterwards it was an Evo...

And I see so many familiar and... O.o Unfamiliar dolls! What the... who escaped the Granado community here? It's evil to keep the cuties and sexy ones to onself!

Iwan's lab really looks awesome! Great job! -^_^-

@sno4wy It's neither. It's Ara's Uranus, which is more or less a 'special' color as she got the order before in the wrong color (something between tan and bronze) and asked for her Uranus to be cast in that very color :3
She explained it in her LJ. Here's the link: BAM
A comparisson of the color to the bronze is also somewhere in the middle.

    9. Where are all these other Granado owners hiding? So many great photos!

    10. Congrats to the winners--all great choices! All the entries looked good, though. :)

Can't remember what I posted before...! Anyway, photo-spam...

    11. Ahh! All of those photos are AMAZING! :love

aernath - Outclassed? Goodness no! Your stained glass is so cool! :D The pirate is @MaryamDN's boy Damian. :)
Snowy - The colour contrast between Nihlus and Virgil, and the red and blue background is just lovely! It's so simple, but I find it so calming. Iwan's lab was so much fun to put together! XD
fishcake - I'll be putting up the whole photoshoot on my DeviantArt at some point over the next couple of days. :)
april - Your Charles' outfit is gorgeous!
BlitheFool - Yay for vampires! :D

I think the one with the bone wings is a Neptune, I remember seeing a journal somewhere of his creation...Thranduil is awesome...and I need to see more of the two titans at the top of the gallery. Oh let's face it, I'd love to see more photos of all the entries. :D

Also...the winner of second place is thoroughly convincing me that I need to hurry up and save for an Evol body for my Neptune. :nosebleed

    12. The "second place" was my favorite too but I put it down to the fact that I am a Star Wars nerd :D
@Quiet and Insane I will keep an eye on your Deviant Art pages!
@april Sinjun looks so glorious in his finery, I am so glad you entered him--he is one of my favorites!

    13. @fishcake - I'll let you know once they're all up. :)

    14. @fishcake - It's more than a little haphazard and there's still so much I need to upload! But the BJD section is mostly up to date. :)

    15. ^_^ thanks @Quiet and Insane
@aernath yes ^_^ Damian is my privateer and his super awesome faceup is by @Innelda_Isher! I've been meaning to come and share photos of him here...life has been in the way of course. my photography skills don't do him any justice ( i don't have a processional camera...pretty much just me phone)
@Quiet and Insane okay...yeah i'm pretty sold on the Evol body too O____O i really want one now!
gah must have been difficult to choose between those top 3 though eh!? i also really enjoyed looking through all the entrees ^___^
@BlitheFool looks like there are more owners out there than on this forum (<.< says i...who is only posting now)
      here's my love!

    16. @MaryamDN He's just stunning! I love his outfit too!

    17. Thank you ^_^ he is definitely one of my most prized dolls (though that's hard to choose for me, i love them all so much) but his faceup is just divine and to this day i can stare at it and it still amazes me! you know how some things you just don't get used to? in a good way!

    18. @MaryamDN -- Damian is gorgeous! :love That really is an incredible faceup!

That does bring up another question of mine, and anyone please feel free to answer :D, but does Granado's inhouse faceup artist actually put in the amount of detail that can be seen in their official photos? For instance, using MaryamDN's Damian as an example, his faceup includes subtle details like the freckling that makes his skin look like real skin rather than doll skin. I've noticed that a lot of dolls with manufacturer faceups aren't quite so detailed, but then again, a lot of manufacturers' example pictures feature the "doll skin" look rather than the "real skin" look on Granado's site.

    19. @sno4wy The answer is "it depends". If you buy a full doll and Crocus Lee does your faceup, it will have a lot of detail. I have only gotten one faceup direct from the company and I think it was done by Boxofegg. I was happy with it--it was a Katrien and she does have subtle and well-done freckles, but it's not the superrealistic style Crocus does on some of the guys. It looks like if you like MaryamDN's boy, you should commission Innelda_Isher . :)

    20. thats a good question.i don't know about Granado...i know that the faceups that come with ringdolls, don't look like the faceups in their promo pix at all....they're much simpler and lack the intricacy from what i've seen :/
      @BlitheFool thank you ^__^

    21. Welcome, maryamDN! I hope to see many more photos of your gorgeous gorgeous man! :aheartbea
I hope others will be brave too, and come share their dolls with us.

Yes, that's my Uranus in the woods with the guitar. ^__^ That's the photo I got muddy knees from. lol
I lugged him and four others about 4km along the trails that day. Wow! Never again! Maybe only three of them at once... Way too heavy!
I think I got the guitar from eBay, years ago. It's a klunky plastic thing, and with the battery in it, it plays a tune. I took the battery out (could only stand listening to the tune so many times) and that made it light enough for the dolls to hold. I wish I could remember the search words I used to find it...or which seller I got it from. It's been several years...

    22. Wow, he's amazing! He looks real.

    23. Dollie sized guitars:
      eBay item number:182038712857
Plug this in to the Ebay search function and see what you get--should be 2 toy guitars, 11'' by 4'' by 2''
I used "Plastic Toy Guitar with batteries" in Toys and Hobbies and got a few hits.

    24. @april: O.O Wow... Gorgeous... I love the vibe these two give off. And you made such a nice background setting... Lovely!

@Quiet and Insane -^^- Thanks. It's one of my favourite pics as well. Oooh I belive you had fun with the lab. I totally would as well XD I'm amazed you found all these things in the proper size... How long have you been searching and gathering?

@fishcake I have to (shamefully?) admit, that I totally didn't get that it was Star Wars at all. Until I looked at all five pics. Was curious if I could figure out the owner and read read the text that came with them :3

@MaryamDN Another fellow Granado owner identified :D WELCOME!!! -^^-
Damien is gorgeous! (It's tan skin, no?) And if the pics you show are made with your mobile phone camera, than I gotta say, that's perfectly fine! It captures the handsomeness just right :D Don't be shy and keep showing him off!!! -^3^- We love the eye candy.

... Did you make the shirt? O.o the decoration around his neck is awesome...

@sno4wy The recent dolls are all face-upped by Crocus himself. You can see on Granado's flickr the heads he face-ups himself every once in a while and they DO look just like the promotion pics. Other than that. What @fishcake said :3

@aernath No boy escapes notice ;) The muddy knees were so totally worth it :D
I guess using a trolly would have been out of the question to make bringing the quartet easier?

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand detective @fishcake strikes again :D Great find!

    25. @fishcake -- guitars... the number led to kids plastic acoustic style guitars, but 11"... do they look good with 1/3 sized or 70cm boys? Most dolls-sized guitars are 9" and a bit better for MSD size. I have one electric guitar that is 13" and looks OK with the 70cms, but those are hard to find!

@MaryamDN -- Damian is gorgeous! Love those eyebrows!!!

@sno4wy -- I've got a Granado default faceup and Ringdolls... Most doll companies are very good about having faceups that match the official photos. I love Ringdoll, but they totally do less careful faceups than in the photos! Ringdoll comes close, but I agree that they are not as good as in the photos. (I have a v.1 Frankenstein and a Norman 2 Fair from Ringdoll, both fully painted. The faceups are "acceptable" but not great. That said, I still like Ringdoll faceups, I just expect less!)

I think the Granado faceups are more close to the official photos than Ringdoll. I think they DO vary a little from the photos sometimes, but stay pretty close. Companies like Iplehouse and Soom are almost exactly as the photos.

Here's a close up of my Charles with a Crocus faceup from several years ago --

    26. @aernath Thank you ^_^ he needs more photo time... soon hopefully! your gang looks happy in the woods but man! you took them all with you! you're a brave brave doll master *_*
@Phoenixflower383 Elvira's faceups skills are some of the best out there! i'm still in awe and i've had him for several months already! <3 Thank you ^___^
@Snowy ^____^ thank you for the warm welcome! ^_^ the "shirt" is actually just a fancy collar that will eventually be a full outfit <.< hopefully! but yes :) it's one of my attempts at making outfits!
^_^ yes, i believe he's in tan. i'm not the first owner so i'm unsure. i got him in a trade with Elvira....same person who did the custom faceup, but he's quite sun kissed so i'ma say taned. he's another one of him, with a wig .... i'm still undecided as to which looks better on him.

@april :) yeah i'd agree, that's pretty darn close to the promo pic qualities. I'll pass your compliments to Damian. ^_^ thank you.

    27. @MaryamDN Why pic one when he wears both so well? :D He could have just have a dying fetisch of some sort or wear a wig... :3 Well. Depeding on his role and time period setting?

I like the shade of eyes btw! Goes really well with the tan. Also like how the lips are just lightly glossed. If there's one thing I can consider a 'pet peeve' of mine, it's when manly men's lips are glossed over too much, they shine like a water droplet...

    28. hehe ^__^ my dolls rarely stick to one character... they end up being their own people...and then just pose as who intend them to be come time to photograph them...otherwise they have a mind of their own O_o so he may very well have a fetish! and i'd be okay with that ....my dollshe david wont be :P cuz that's his wig.
the eyes are made from adelkawalka 5mm irises ^_^ i just buy the irises from her on etsy and stick them into balls of polymer clay! she's great and quick to make them. and this is the least expensive way to get realistic eyes! she does custom irises....which is what i always get! love them!

    29. I do not envy the poor person/people having to choose the top three. It would have been such a hard choice!
      I kinda like RingDoll's face ups...but maybe I'm biased...
I got all of Iwan's photos up so you can check my DA gallery for more if you'd like @fishcake and everyone else. There's a few in the scraps folder as well.

    30. ZOMG I need to check this out..I have spent months hunting for weird polymer goop to make irises out of..these would be a lot better!
      They look amazing in Damien!
@Quiet and Insane I am off to check your DA and thank you!

    31. @MaryamDN - I wish I could 'like' a photo more than once! I think both wigs look nice on him.

@Quiet and Insane - what great set pieces!

@april - Oooh. Not enough Charles' on this board! His facial hair is super realistic. How the heck does Crocus do that?

Here's some Daniel slightly before the wine incident of 2016.

      • x 4
    32. @BlitheFool for some reason he looks like he has a slight smile "I shall prank Blithe Fool by dropping this glass and hilarity will ensue." (They are probably still giggling about it in the closet). For one moment though, he looked magnificent!

    33. I mean, the joke is on him, @fishcake , 'cause he's the one that spent an hour on my art room floor naked and covered in wine. :wiggle

    34. It might have been the best hour of his life ;)

      • x 1
    35. AHHHAHHAAAA @BlitheFool and @fishcake! this conversation has made my day!!! ^_^ but i'm with @fishcake ...it probably was the best hour of his like.....
is Daniel he on the Dollshe body? i have to admit i have a weak spot for sculpts with wider shoulders *_* Daniel is quite fine! and i'm kind of jealous of your floral background O_o i need to find me some more interesting backgrounds!

    36. @MaryamDN - He's on the new Dollzone B70-004 body, actually. It's really nice! The neck is a perfect fit. The resin match...is not. But, if you're doing your own faceups you could easily blush. Granado is more yellow than DZ pink and not as yellow as DZ yellow. He's on a pink body.

    37. @BlitheFool ^_^ thus the high collar huh? i use the same trick <.< Damian is on an Impldoll body...color is awful, size is excellent. must go look at this new DZ body!

    38. @MaryamDN - Yep! Daniel has nothing put high collar shirts. Honestly, when I blush the body I can probably fix it easily enough. I've been waiting to finish his aesthetics because MoC is sending me a replacement hand. You can't tell in the photo, but one of his pinky fingers was busted during shipping.

    39. Oh, I like RIngdoll's faceups well enough that I have 2 of them... but they still are a bit more sketchy than the official photos. (I think Doll-Chateau's faceups are a little sketchy, too, come to think of it.)

Sorry for the off-topic-ness... but here's official photo of Ringdoll Norman 2 and my admittedly terrible photo... but believe me, the facup is NOT as detailed as in the official photos. It's CLOSE, though! Just sayin'...!

    40. @BlitheFool - Thank you! It's a collection of random things that I happened to find and buy a few years back, plus a jewelry 'cabinet' that I found on sale late last year. :)
Personally I think Daniel looks rather smug, as if he knows he's about to spend an hour on the floor naked and covered in wine. ;)

@april - That's just bizarre, my Norman Dark 2.0 is almost exactly the same as the promo photos. :nowords: Perhaps they have a couple of different artists?

    41. Ringdoll might have different artists doing the faceups. I wouldn't be surprised. I know that the version 1 Frankensteins varied a little, too. But as long as the differences aren't wildly different, it's OK. Just the nature of having hand-made faceups... they can't be all exactly alike.

    42. I've found that since about a year Ringdoll's face-ups pretty never look like their promotion counterparts. It's like they do this super-detailed face-ups for promotion and even when you buy the fullset you only get a 'watered down' version of it. Still gorgeous, but not what people ordered. I have two friends with several Ringdolls and we only recently talked about it, seeing how one of them again got a doll with face-up and it was a clearly less detailed one. We've also found a box opening of a Dracula online where again, the face-up looks like a 'pretty' version of the dark one promoted... :\

      Back on topic thought...
It's starting to get spring-time-flair around here -^^- I have some plans, but first I need to get my Gs dressed again XD I think @fishcake might have been onto something when she suggested Nihlus would enjoy his fishtail. He does. Virgil only gives me that deadpan expression of 'get me out of this thing already' and Rachel... ^^° Rachel just wants me to finally sew her the cute clothes I planned for her... I admit I'm procastrating... If only Rachel weren't so cute... as it is, I've planned 'cute' stuff for here. Aka skirts. Ruffles. Other cute stuff I'm not really good with. ... I'm thinking of making her a leggins, t-shirt and a cute hoody instead. I'm better with that kind of stuff ^^°°°°°

    43. @april - Very true.

@Snowy - I still need to get Iwan shoes...and I'll be making him a cloak/coat/cape/thing for the winter down here.

    44. Can anyone tell me when the last time that Uranus was available for unlimited ordering? I'm trying to assess how long I'd likely have to wait for him to be available again if I pass on him this round.

    45. It seems to be roughly a year @sno4wy but it's hard to predict! i admit to cruising the Marketplace for Granado orphans, too ;)
@Snowy Virgil looks so good in his tail-- and of course he wants out of it asap ;) Rachel would look cute in anything--the ruffled dresses you can buy a lot of places, but it's harder to find nice fitting hoodies and leggings for the nuevo girls, so I think you are right to sew those first.
@Quiet and Insane it makes me laught to think of the well-dressed Iwan with bare feet under the lab table..I bet Luts dress shoes would fit him fine.

    46. Actually Uranus was last released on the Evol-body Nov/Dec last year ^^° *waiting on hers*

@fishcake : O.o really? I admit I only browse and usually tend not to find anything I like either way. Or if I do, I'm like "O.o ... Too expensive ..."

@Quiet and Insane ... I think Iwan might enjoy his free footies. But maybe a pair of socks so he doesn't get dirty and cold? :3

    47. @Snowy I go to the thrift stores and look for the cheap chinese porcelain dolls..buy them, take the clothes off..and put the dolls back in the donation bin :o Shhh don't tell.
Also here I like Blue Blood Doll for those silly fluffy dresses, but it is not as cheap for you since they are in the USA.

    48. @fishcake - I've got a couple of nice pairs of shoes lined up for him from DollHeart, but the exchange rate plus shipping means I'd be forking out far too much money for me to justify them at the moment.:sigh

@Snowy - He does have a pair of socks at least. I'm a huge fan of socks myself, and I love making the for my guys. :) Naturally his socks are grey instead of the bright purples, blues, and greens the other are all wearing. XD

    49. gaaaaah Norman! :D I snatched a tan one off the MP last week and while he'll be tough to hybrid, I'm madly in love.

Then again, I'm madly in love with this guy, too ;)
Horrible pic, but I spent all day trying to tame that lambsplosion and turn it into something remotely wig-like. He's nearing completion :)

      • x 5
    50. lambsplosion is an adorable description for that wig--I think it's so cute!

      • x 1
    51. lambsplosion is looking pretty good, I think! :D

    52. Lamb wigs are beautiful but they are seriously hard to control. Yours looks very nice.

    53. Far better job than I could ever do! I like it!

      • x 1
    54. Thanks, everyone! :blush

fishcake, me too! But now he really needs body blushing and the full spa treatment. (And his proper eyes. And eyelashes. The never-ending customization ...)
april, thank you! I'm happy you like it :XD:
Therealwalter, thank you! They really are, aren't they? If I had tried to make my first wig from lamb I probably never would have touched natural fiber again ...
aernath, never say (n)ever ;) I'm happy you like it! I was worried about the variegated grey and how to make it look natural, I thought it was going to look patchy or weird, but it went better than I'd thought.

I'm hoping to get a decent pic for you guys in natural light today :3nodding:

    55. Heh, lambsplosion. I like that word! :) Gotland lambs' wool is so lovely and soft.

    56. It is ... if it gets its way ^^° I love the look of it, most of all the silvery sheen it's got, even though I'm spoiled rotten by how well-behaved suri alpaca is. :blush

    57. I'm getting closer to buying a Granado doll, and I've been using the EVOL body as the standard of comparison. I haven't found anything else that I've liked more, but I did find something that made me boggle. With my limited experience of BJDs, I can't figure this out, so I was hoping that one of you guys could help me. :sweat

How does Fantasia's male body lack the feature that is present in the EVOL body? The slits in the EVOL body don't really bother me, but in an ideal world I'd prefer them to not be there, all other things being equal of course. Is the lack of them a good indication of perhaps less flexibility in the Fantasia body?

I'd have just assumed it all to be a matter of mobility differences but then looking at all large doll bodies across various different companies, I noticed that in some female bodies, the slits aren't visible in the neutral standing position, while in some other female bodies from the same company, they are. In these cases, it appears to be a difference in the shape of the pelvis sculpt.

Is it a matter of different approaches to craftsmanship, or limited functionality?

    58. It's a different way of stringing. With invisible elastic channels, the pivot point is in the resin piece between the legs, and the strings cross over. With the channels visible, the elastic goes straight down through the torso into the legs (as far as I know).
