I wanted a name that conveyed his steadiness and destructiveness. He is named for the volcano in Italy, which is a part of the skyline where my family is from.

Just as he is starting to feel like he has his life together in his early thirties with his career as a journalist and engaged to his college freshman sweetheart, Vesuvius is shattered by an unexpected breakup that causes him to meltdown and lose his newspaper job. Lonely, lost, and on the cusp of a fully destructive breakdown, a close friend Hyejin invites him on a roadtrip across the United States to seek cryptozoological creatures for her paranormal blog (which desperately needs a skilled writer and copy editor). On the road, Vesuvius finds true friendship with Hyejin and a goal that makes him feel joy.

Vesuvius’ intelligence, loneliness, and vulnerability on the open road make him a beacon for spooky shit—something that both makes Hyejin frustrated and reinvigorated. He is found in particular by the Desert Siren, a ghostly humanoid man who wanders the desert at night seeking lonely travelers to prey upon.

He is clumsy and depressed, but steady, smart, and romantic.
