Tallis has had a pretty strange life so far. Born the daughter of a “blood whore” Tallis has spent her whole life feeling unimportant. Her mother raised her to believe that the world would view her has nothing. As unimportant. As nothing more than a plaything for wealthy moroi. Her mother also kept her a secret...

When Tallis was born her mother didn't tell anyone. She raised Tallis alone in their one bedroom apartment in Siberia and reminded her daily that people are dangerous and disrespectful, and that no one can know she exists or they would make her live like her mother, a fate that Tallis fears more than death itself. She never attended a real school, and taught herself with the books her mother would bring home for her. This was her life up until shortly after her 16th birthday when her mother never came home.

After her mother's disappearance Tallis finally ventures out of their apartment for the first time in her life. It was the scariest thing she had ever done. After a few days picking through dumpsters looking for food Tallis meets Ekaterina, a young dhampir, that takes Tallis under her wing, eventually introducing her to Ekaterina's uncle that lives in the United States. It is then that Tallis moves to the US for school and guardian training and for the first time in her life, learns what it is like to have friends.
