Yamaoka Suirei is the betrothed, eventual spouse of Takashima Koremitsu, who's known in his family as Kokichi. She is blind from birth, but has not let that prevent her from learning how to play the biwa to mastery. She originally had a bad relationship with Kokichi when they were children. He found her to be annoyingly arrogant (being a daughter of an up-and-coming local official), and she found him to be an insufferable flirt. But as they matured and outgrew a lot of their selfish tendencies, they began to spend more time with one another out of their own accord. By the time they were to be married, it was obvious to all involved that Suirei and Kokichi were finally in love with each other.
