Shay is head of the disciplinary committee at Fortuna Academy and the boyfriend to Alice Valentine when the story starts. Alice and Shay break up because of her engagement to Mavis Belmont. Shay struggles with his sexuality and his faith in the Catholic Church as well has his parents opposition. He finds himself living with friends because of his parents inability to accept him for who he is, but he keeps his faith.

Shay is involved with Harlan Valentine, and stays in the Valentine guest house after his parents kick him out. Shay wants to gain independence and survive on his own.
