One of eight children, she was once called Suzu, when anyone thought to call her at all. After a flood destroyed her family farm, she and two sisters were sent to work in the yoshiwara. After a time the other girls began calling her Sashiko-'little stabs'-not after her sewing skills, but her cutting wit. After 5 years, she has risen to quite a high rank.
