Monique grew up with her French-Canadian parents and older sister, Annette, in NYC. She never quite felt that she fit in anywhere, and began to struggle with depression, disordered eating, and substance abuse in her teens. Eventually, she became pregnant, and left her family and partner behind to raise her daughter, Ophelia, alone. She rented an art studio and spent the rest of her life devoted to sculpting.
