Fern (or as his family calls him Nicolas Hawthorne), was born into one of the most powerful covens in his city. It was expected of him to get a high ranking position within the coven. Preferably immediately after he finished his studies.

But this was not the life he wanted for himself. He would rather cut ties with family and live in a little cottage in the woods than stay in that corrupted coven.

When Fern confronted his parents about his decision to leave the coven they did not take it well. His father was fuming and his mother couldn't stop crying. This was not the life they planned for him. It was expected of him to take a place on the witch council. Not live in a cottage like a common shape shifter!?

Shape shifting witches were considered as one of the lowest ranking witches in this world, according to the witch council.

You see Fern was actually considering joining his parents on the council. But that all changed when he met Rynn.
