Avery was in foster care his whole life. When his recent foster father dies and and the foster mother sends the kids away to live in a retirement community, Avery gets taken in by Professor Delacroix, and Professor Star to become a member of their family. The couple wanted a child but didn't really want to deal with little kids so they jumped on the chance to foster and hopefully adopt the young teenager.
