Esthetizing refers to the general finishing and beautification of a doll. Most people refer to seam removal (sanding) as esthetizing, but it may also refer to separating fingers and toes by gently removing the resin between the digits.

Many people consider seams unsightly and will remove seam lines all BJD have. Some companies may sand their dolls before shipping them out to buyers, while others leave this to you. Esthetizing/sanding is done mainly for aesthetic reasons as it creates a smooth, seamless, and often more professional and realistic look to your doll. Some owners prefer not to sand as the seams do not bother them. It is important to removed though, if you do choose to sand remember the following:

- Wear a mask or some form of ventilation unit
- Sand in a well ventilated area

The resin used to make BJD is highly dangerous and should not be breathed in as it will settle in your lungs and is unable to degrade. Sanding underwater can help reduce the amount of dust in the air as you sand.
