Thanks to an alert from Cobaltconduct, I was able to get my hands on my long desired Volks classroom head "D" from Dollyteria Cobaltconduct thought the face-up is from Volks. Can anybody I.D. if this is a company face-up and which doll it came from?
Oh it arrived! I'm definitely not sure, but the style looks a little similar to how Volks has painted some of their boys at some point - it could just be someone doing similar work of course. Since there was no headplate, it's probably not a coordinate or one-off but it could have been sent in for a "re-make" a good while ago. It doesn't match the currently available make styles, though. In any case, it looks professionally made; some faceup artists sign the inside of the head so if there are any markings there, that could be a lead.
Yes it looks like a Volks school D. The school heads don't have headplates so that checks out. It does look like an older official Volks faceup, but I imagine there is no way to really prove it definitively. I think you can send the school heads for faceup if you live in Japan - I guess if you can confirmation from someone who's done it that is indeed true that makes it more likely? As a counter weight - on closer look it seems like there is little brown freckles/skin texturing (hard to tell?) which is unusual on volks official faceup.
Well, it's not my ideal face-up, but I certainly like those eyebrows. My ideal face-up would be the one below in this old Volks advertisement, with perhaps darker eyebrows, eyelashes and fully painted bottom lip. Or something based on an old family photograph. Due to copyright issues I know I can't ask someone to outright copy the one from the ad. I just love it so much it's hard to imagine that it could be improved upon. I really want someone who can do that older Volks style of painting unless I come across something I like better, which is again hard to imagine. Another wrinkle to this situation is that I had an artist do an "inspired by" the ad face-up on an off topic doll, and I really wasn't happy with the result. I don't know enough about the current style of "girly make-up" offered by FCS to know if I would like it. Since this head has some stains and some yellowing, I'm also contemplating getting a proxy shopper to do an exchange service on it at L.A. party this fall. Thoughts, advice?
I think the freckling you're referring to might actually be dirt? The face-up looks similar-ish to an older one-off Okita Souji 09 that I own, if that helps @Skygirl
Having the head renewed and sending the picture to Volks might be nice. I've just heard conflicting reports about what they will or won't do. Any idea how I could find out more?
